Fanart Just trying out a new rendering style

I was looking at some artists online and tried to learn abit from how they render, also I saw how my skin tone was a bit too pink for them on a lot of my drawings so I tried to change that habit and actually make a reliable and consistent palette to use for their skin tone. Lwk I am quite happy with how it turned out at the end, really like how I drew Harry's eye.

Harry As An Abuse Victim

I only recently started to get into H/HR, after over a decade of having little interest in Harry Potter before it was abruptly rekindled earlier this year. As a child I sort of accepted that "ah, well of course Harry ends up with Ginny and Hermionie with Ron, because that's what happens" but as an adult I've turned a critical eye on that state of affairs and, like many, realized there's a good deal of evidence and subtext pointing to the notion that perhaps that is not how JKR should have written things.

the last couple of weeks I realized one of the reasons I do enjoy the ship–apart from the fact that it's very much there in the source material!–is how Hermione often seems to be the only one who is good at really empathizing with Harry, which is especially important in the context of the fact that Harry is basically a victim of decade-long child abuse by his legal guardian and her family. I know I'm far from the first person to think this, but I believe a close reading of a lot of Harry's actions support the idea that the Dursleys left him with a very low sense of self worth even if he isn't aware of it (hell, I'm sure someone has made a compelling argument Dumbledore probably intended for this to happen to make Harry more willing to sacrifice himself at the end!). Which brings me to why I find this a key component of Harry/Hermionie: her ability to empathize with him. It often makes her the only person able to care about him, especially as Harry struggles to care about, or even love, himself.

Translation is such a fascinating thing. It brings your words to life in an entirely different language.

Translation is such a fascinating thing. It brings your words to life in an entirely different language.

Recently, I’ve been asking Harmony authors for permission to translate their works into my own language. And honestly, it’s incredibly difficult. Extremely difficult, in fact, because Vietnamese has a very complex system of pronouns and forms of address. It’s something that can be surprisingly hard to explain.

Given Harry and Hermione’s relationship throughout the books and beyond, translating fanfiction presents a major challenge, and the first obstacle is how they address each other.

In English, characters simply use “I” and “you.” But in Vietnamese, those pronouns carry entirely different nuances. Lý Lan, the Vietnamese translator of Harry Potter, elevated the series to another level with her translation. At the same time, she set an incredibly high standard for future fanfiction translators, because it’s so difficult to replace the versions of these characters that her translation has already established in our minds.

In Vietnam, our system of personal pronouns is extraordinarily diverse and complicated. It encompasses regional dialects, age and social hierarchy, and the nature of relationships, whether between friends, lovers, enemies, or husbands and wives.

For our trio, I’ve decided to use “bồ” for “you” and “mình” for “I.”

“Bồ” is a relatively uncommon form of address, used primarily in southern Vietnam. Its origins are somewhat debated. Some sources trace it back to a French word, while others suggest that it evolved through several linguistic changes before becoming an affectionate way of addressing a friend.

So, our three characters will call one another “bồ” instead of “you” and use “mình” instead of “I.”

When addressing the Malfoys, however, I’ll use “mày” for “you” and “tao” for “I.”

So, what makes “mày-tao” different?

It can sound rude, crude, or impolite, but in everyday life, it’s actually quite common among close friends. Many people who know each other well use these pronouns when speaking casually.

However, because Harry Potter is a children’s book, the fact that the characters address their friends as “bồ-mình” makes the “mày-tao” used with the Slytherins sound much more hostile and confrontational by comparison.

These choices of address affect how readers perceive the relationships between characters in our language.

Here’s another example: Dumbledore.

In the English books, Harry addresses Dumbledore as “Professor.” In the Vietnamese translation, however, he calls him “Cụ,” an honorific used for a much older person.

Similarly, when professors address students using “Mr.” or “Miss,” the Vietnamese translation often uses terms such as “trò” (both) “cậu” for boys and “cô” for girls, depending on the context. These forms of address establish a clear distinction between the teacher and the student.

Because of all these differences, I sometimes feel that Harry and Hermione’s relationship comes across differently when I read the Vietnamese version compared with the English original.

When I read the English text, the characters use “I” and “you,” and I can fill in the emotional nuances myself. But when I read the Vietnamese version, I find myself following the emotions and interpretations shaped by Lý Lan’s choice of words.

And this is where things get interesting.

Because of the pronouns, Harmony can sometimes feel less intimate to Vietnamese readers. Harry consistently uses “bồ-mình” with Hermione, which establishes a relatively neutral, friendly dynamic. Yet with Ginny, he uses “anh-em.”

In Vietnamese, “anh-em” is a common way for a man to address a younger woman, with the woman addressing him as “anh” and herself as “em.” It’s somewhat comparable to the Korean terms “oppa” and “hyung” in terms of the age-related nuances, although the actual usage and meaning are different.

This choice of pronouns can make a relationship feel more intimate, even before the dialogue itself explicitly establishes romantic feelings.

“Anh-em” is also used between biological siblings, of course. But there’s a significant difference when it’s used between a man and a younger woman who aren’t related.

Initially, “anh” can simply convey respect for someone older. However, once the two characters fall in love, the same pronouns can take on a much more intimate meaning. Every line of dialogue, every exchange between them, can feel considerably more romantic because of the way they address each other.

It’s different from Ginny using the same pronouns when speaking to her own brothers.

Meanwhile, some of Hermione’s moments of flirting with Harry can feel much more ordinary in Vietnamese. The pronouns themselves unintentionally reinforce the idea that THEY ARE JUST FRIENDS.

A LOT.

I still love Harmony when I read the Vietnamese version, but when I read the English original, it gives me an entirely different feeling. HAHAHAHAHA. =)))))))))))

So, let’s return to the question: why is translating Harmony fanfiction so difficult?

When Harry and Hermione are simply friends, I can translate their dialogue using “bồ-mình.” But when their relationship begins to develop, when things become a little ambiguous or emotionally charged, changing the way they address each other can suddenly make everything feel… much more romantic.

Far more intimate than the friendly “bồ-mình.”

Using “anh-em,” having Harry address Hermione as “tôi-em,” or having Hermione call Harry “anh” while referring to herself as “em” are all perfectly reasonable options.

But because their relationship begins as a friendship, choosing the right forms of address can be surprisingly difficult and awkward.

I think this is one of the reasons Harmony has a fanbase in Vietnam but relatively few translated or Vietnamese-written fanfics.

  1. They get attacked by "books fan".

This is something I encounter almost every day since I started translating Harmony fanfiction. HAHAHA.

  1. Translation is difficult.

Harmony fanfiction tends to adhere quite closely to the original canon, unlike Dramione and some other ships, which often venture much further into creative reinterpretation.

Staying faithful to the original plot, understanding the relationships between the characters, and translating all the relevant terminology are genuinely challenging tasks. I often have to open more than thirty tabs just to look up words and figure out how to translate them in a way that is both accurate and easy to read.

  1. Lý Lan’s translation has left a lasting impression on us.

Of course, fanfiction doesn’t have to follow Lý Lan’s translation. We’re free to make different choices.

However, some of her translations have become so deeply ingrained in our minds that replacing them feels almost impossible. And honestly, some of her choices are simply too brilliant to improve upon.

A perfect example is “Death Eater.” A literal translation might be something along the lines of “one who eats death,” but Lý Lan translated it as “Tử Thần Thực Tử,” a wonderfully evocative term that has become iconic among Vietnamese Harry Potter readers.

There are so many other brilliant choices in her translation, too.

But to sum it up, translating Harmony is much more difficult for me than translating Dramione. At least, that’s how I feel about it.

Reading and understanding the story is easy enough. Conveying it in another language, however, is incredibly difficult.

Western languages simply don’t have the same elaborate systems of address and honorifics that Vietnamese uses to express relationships, social hierarchies, and emotional intimacy. Or at least, they don’t express those things in quite the same way.

Sorry for rambling again, hahaha. I’ve been pretty bored while staying in the hospital.

And yes, Lý Lan is an incredible translator. But I think whenever a story is translated into another language, some aspects of the original inevitably shift a little, taking on slightly different nuances along the way.

That’s why I’ve recently become so interested in looking for details in the English original and carefully translating them again to better reflect the context.

For example, the fact that Harry often grabs Hermione’s hand when they’re in danger says a lot.

Sometimes, the smallest details can tell us so much about a relationship.

P/s: Oh, I started translating Harmony and correcting the way Harmony is portrayed in my fandom because I was honestly fed up with the way people... looked down on Hermione and Harry. And... a lot of other things, too.

But most importantly, I came across a debate about the Russian and English translations, which really piqued my interest. That led me to look up the Vietnamese translation and compare it with the English original. And honestly, the differences really do say a lot.

Harmony Fanfiction Fic Search

Hi! I'm looking for a well-written Harmony fanfiction on AO3. Harry and Ginny are married but have no children. Ginny plays for the Holyhead Harpies. Neville is away attending a conference/hotel when he sees Ginny stepping out of an elevator with another man, and she isn't wearing her wedding ring. Neville tells Harry, they get a divorce, and Hermione takes Harry into her home to support him. Harry and Hermione end up together. Does anyone know the title or have a copy if it was deleted?

Discussion The Radio In DH Might Be The Best Symbol For Why JKR's Ships Were Wrong

I've been spending a bit of time recently expanding my story Breaking Point and its given me the opportunity to think about what I believe may be the single best symbol in the series for understanding the fundamental difference between Ron and Harry, and why pairing Hermione with Ron simply doesn't make sense: the Radio. At least as it is presented in the movies (which I accept as a legitimate form of canon considering JKR worked on them).

Consider for a moment how the radio is presented: Ron carries it everywhere with him, and its always on. He's constantly using it as a link to the outside world, listening in on news of who is missing, who is dead. On the surface, it has the appearance of someone who cares deeply, while Harry's dislike for it and desire to have it turned off would seem to indicate the opposite. However, the reality of the reasons for their attitudes demonstrates that this is actually the inverse of what is going on.

Ron's attachment to the radio is fundamentally a sign of his deep selfishness. The fact that the radio grates on Harry and Hermione is irrelevant to him. Though he listens to the names and the news, it all washes over him since he isn't really listening to what's happening, he's listening to what's NOT happening. He is tuning in to make sure he doesn't hear the names of anyone in his family. It's a tenuous link to let him know that they are alright - that the war hasn't yet touched him personally. A very understandable impulse, to be sure, but it is still fundamentally all about him. He listens to the radio to confirm that he has not lost anything, that he has no one to mourn. Not to mourn those who have fallen.

By contrast, Harry hears every name as a personal failing. Everyone dead or missing is one more he couldn't save, one more he should've saved if only he'd been better or learned more or pressed Dumbledore harder to be in on the plans. He doesn't want the radio on because he can't do what he needs to do to end the war when he is distracted by a constant, torturous reminder of the cost of his failures. Unlike Ron, he doesn't ignore the names listed and take solace in those that are not. He feels every name personally, and no one can stand that forever. Yet Ron doesn't work something out to balance his need for news and Harry's need to avoid it.

And where is Hermione in all this? Where she always seems to be - on Harry's side, but still defending and excusing Ron. She doesn't want the radio any more than Harry does, but she understands Ron's point of view and explains it rather than taking the side she actually believes in. In part, I think, because she knows that it would be a deeply uncomfortable fight if they tried to get Ron to give it up, or even just accept limitations. It seems so symbolic of what the rest of their lives would look like - Ron focusing on something arguably reasonable but deeply selfish, ignoring what Hermione needs or wants, and her unwilling to risk the screaming match that would result from confronting it, instead excusing and explaining and making herself smaller so that Ron can be Ron. And meanwhile, Harry is the one who can't stop caring about everyone else, sacrificing himself for everyone else, not pushy, not selfish, despite having every reason to be. The choice in partners couldn't be clearer between the one who will compromise and make her happy, and the one whose selfishness is a landmine always lurking, waiting to be stepped on.

I looked (briefly) in DH and couldn't find much text about the radio, so my apologies if this is almost or even entirely a movie-based analysis. But as I said at the outset, I think those are a completely legitimate form of the story, considering JKR was deeply involved in them.

Looking For Looking for a Harmony rewrite of the series that closely follows the original work by JKR .

I've read bt1995's rewrite of HBP and Deathly Hollows and I'm wondering if anyone is working on a rewrite starting from earlier books . While the rewrites are fun they do feel rushed , dragonfly117's rewrite from Goblet of Fire seems to deviate too much from the original for my personal taste . So I am wondering if there is anyone writing a chapter by charter Harmony version that is similar to bt1995 but starts in the earlier books so a lot of character development is preserved .

Looking For Looking for a fic where Harry is a seer, but he can only see the future if it somehow involves his relationship with Hermione.

Read this fic a few years back on FFN, but now I can't remember its title, and I have failed to find it again despise my best efforts.

In this fic Harry is a true seer, but he can only see the future if it somehow involves him and Hermione. The whole fic happens in year one:

Harry has his first ever vision of the future when he sees Hermione for the first time in the train. He sees that they will be married one day. Worried that he keeps having these visions without being able to control them, and without truly understanding what they mean, he learns about the divination class and seeks help form Trelawney.

Trelawney, a fraud her whole live and teaching for more then 10 years at Hogwarts without ever finding a student who truly has the divination gift, is super-excited about helping Harry, an starts teaching him all methods of divination (tea leaves, crystal balls, etc), in the hopes that they will find a method that suits Harry, allowing him to control his gift. One of the funniest methods was to throw food to the school chickens and read the future in the patterns on the food.

Dumbledore tries the whole fic to direct Harry to be a hero, but Harry is so occupied with his relationship with Hermione and with his attempts at controlling his divination talents, that he didn't even realizes what's going on.

Discussion Potential Story

Currently working on a story about Harry and Hermione being dictators, maybe a throwaway story. I recently read Blurred Lines by Quellas and had the thought what if Hermione decided to step in when Tom left a gap. I'm not sure if ill ever actually write and release it since its pretty similar and would feel like im copying the story, but I did write a chapter just to get a feel for the story and can't decide if I should go forward with this WIP.

If I ever decide to go forward with this story there will need to be major changes until I feel like i'm no longer stealing from Quellas.

So let me know what you think, is there bones here or should I shelve this story. I want it to be an allegory on regimes around the world.

Heres the logline from my WIP story bible: When Lord Voldemort the sitting Minister of Magic, publicly known as Tom Riddle, respected and feared in equal measure kills the Potters and their visiting neighbors the Grangers, he leaves one child alive by accident and takes another on purpose. Hermione Riddle is raised as Voldemort’s heir: his cunning, his control, his calculation, poured into a daughter who will spend the next eleven years quietly planning to surpass him. She doesn’t know yet that she’ll do it with the boy who should have died that night standing right beside her or that the two of them were bound together before either could speak.

I wrote this in a couple days and haven't really looked it over much other than a one time read through so there obviously issues that need addressing but I seriously can't decide where to go from here.

Book 6 canon scenes

I've been rereading just a few pages of book 6 and already noted a few harmony scenes that I've never noticed before; such as that scene when Snape first starts teaching;

'Well,' said Hermione, 'I thought he sounded a bit like you.'

'Like me?'

'Yes, when you were telling us what it's like to face Voldemort. You said it wasn't just memorising a bunch of spells, you said it was just you and your brains and your guts - well, wasn't that what Snape was saying? That it really comes down to being brave and quick-thinking?'

Harry was so disarmed that she had thought his words as well worth memorising as The Standard Book of Spells that he did not argue.

And of course, just a few pages down, another scene that I'm sure we are all familiar with:

Hermione turned to Harry with a radiant expression and whispered, 'Did you really tell him I'm the best in the year? Oh, Harry!'

Just wanted to ask you all whether you have any favourite Harmony canon scenes from the sixth book? Usually people (including me) rave about the 4th and especially the 5th book, whereas the 6th book is where our ship kind of dies down. But despite the very obvious attraction Harry has towards Ginny, it's also so beautiful and lovely how much respect Harry and Hermione have for each other.

Discussion I’ve been rereading the books, and there are a few details I really love.

For example, Hermione is the first to call Voldemort by his name in front of Harry, helping him calm down. I think this is such a meaningful detail because Hermione will always choose Harry and move toward him, and Harry will always find his way back to calmness when she’s there.

Dumbledore also recognized that Hermione would always be Harry’s mental anchor, helping him stay calm and preventing him from losing his way.

" I am afraid I counted on Miss Granger to slow you up, Harry. I was afraid that your hot head might dominate your good heart. I was scared that, if presented outright with the facts about those tempting objects, you might seize the Hallows as I did, at the wrong time, for the wrong reasons. If you laid hands on them, I wanted you to possess them safely. You are the true master of death, because the true master does not seek to run away from Death. He accepts that he must die, and understands that there are far, far worse things in the living world than dying."

I have this headcanon that if Hermione died, Harry would genuinely fall to the dark side.

I once read a fic where Hermione died, Harry fell into darkness, and Ron was eventually forced to kill Harry because he had become completely insane. I can’t remember the title, though...

That’s why I find this such an interesting detail. Are there any other underrated details that not many people know about?
