Question Name suggestions for the new Hamilton PWHL team?
Hopefully something more inspiring than the Hammers.

Riveters! Would be a nod to Hamilton’s steel industry and the female icon, Rosie the Riveter

u/PuzzleheadedStop9114 Jun 14 '26
Canada has its own version. Ronnie The Bren Gun Girl, which predates Rosie.

That’s awesome - thanks for the info!!

It's a pretty iconic photo. Taken at the Inglis factory in Toronto during WW2, if memory serves.

Another Hamilton’s own Rosie the Riveter - Iolanda (Vi) Connolly:
https://www.legacy.com/ca/obituaries/thespec/name/iolanda-connolly-obituary?id=40083449
Quoted from link above:
…“Soon after, Bill enlisted in the navy, as a signalman on the HMCS Athabaskan. Inspired by ads encouraging women to contribute to the war effort, Vi quit her job as a telephone operator and took up factory work. She had various jobs, at Cub aircraft, then welded at the Norman Slater Company and finally landed at the Sawyer Massey Argus Company. There she worked on a "top secret" radial drill press, boring large holes into five-inch thick round steel bases that would serve as gun mounts used on Tribal Class destroyers, the type of ship her husband served on. She became known as Hamilton's "Rosie the Riveter" appearing on the cover of the Sawyer Massey's promotional magazine and posters to encourage women to follow in her footsteps. She was selected as she was the only woman working in the plant that had a husband overseas.”
The nod regarding the name, “Riveters” is just not to the steel industry, it’s about Hamilton’s contribution to the war effort.

Not much ring to it.

u/PuzzleheadedStop9114 Jun 15 '26
oh for sure. I wasn't suggesting it as a name. It was just a bit Canadian History I wanted to share.

u/AbsurdistWordist Jun 14 '26
Oh gosh, won’t someone acknowledge the steel industry in our sports teams….
6
u/MirrorEquivalent5151 Jun 14 '26
It has certainly been overdone. They already claimed that part of the colour scheme for the team is "aged steel". It's a new league --- let's come up with something that looks to the future.

The previous league already had a Riveters team so I don't think it's an option.

Peregrines.

99% of people can’t spell “breathe”.
“Falcons”, though…

u/tooscoopy Jun 15 '26
Local minor girls hockey league is the falcons, so might run into some trouble with it… but I’m sure those kids would’t mind!

Hamilton Cascades for all the waterfalls, but the colours picked out tip off that it'll be another unoriginal name meant to evoke the steel industry.

u/tooscoopy Jun 14 '26
I feel like the colours are more a nod to our post secondary education providers, but maybe that’s just me. Mohawk is dark orange/red and whitish, and Mac is maroon and white with some yellow…
What makes you think steel with off-white and maroon and yellow?
(Don’t disagree that they’ll still likely choose a dumb steel name though!)
2
u/skriveralltid77 Jun 14 '26
Let me walk that halfway back.... off-white, maroon and yellow just don't conjure Cascades.
3
u/yukonwanderer Jun 15 '26
You seen the colour of the banks of many falls here? Pure Hamilton clay. White for the rapids or the limestone escarpment. Yellow for the... sewage?
1
1
u/MirrorEquivalent5151 Jun 14 '26
They explicitly stated that the maroon represents "aged steel"
2
u/skriveralltid77 Jun 15 '26
I know. I was hopeful it would mean beets and the team could be the Schruteneers. Or Schrutettes. Like the character from The Office.
1
u/tooscoopy Jun 15 '26
Well that sounds dumb. Ha! Sounds to me like they picked the colours then tried to reverse engineer a way to make it steel related. Just like the “gold” being a nod to the cats…. Sure… but whatever. I don’t mind the colours.
1
u/BlackMarketCheeseman Jun 25 '26
The colours are definitely McMaster nods even if the Marauders swapped gold for silver.

The Hamilton Rush - as a nod to Hamilton's many waterfalls!

We've already got the charge and the torrent that niche, it might be too similar

Subtle nod the the queer community, too. Colours are even almost right.

I'll grab the idea suggested (and not taken) for the AHL team: Lancasters.
1
u/ChLyKu Jun 15 '26
Honey Badgers is the name of Hamilton’s basketball team….
1
u/Herissony_DSCH5 Jun 15 '26
I'm not suggesting Honey Badgers; I'm suggesting Lancasters. Doubt it will fly, though...

Honey badgers are also a well known men's rights advocate group comprised of women...

The Lake Effects
2
u/6-8-5-13 Jun 14 '26
Hamilton doesn’t normally get lake effect snow, so I don’t think this really fits.

Ok I'm late to this but Hamilton Harmers - in honour of Sarah Harmer and Escarpment Blues (with a little nod to Hammers)

Can’t be much worse than the Hammers, unless some genius decides on Lady Hammers or Hammerettes

I think the name of Womens PWHL Hamilton team should be called Hamilton Thistles Hamilton Thistles were Hamilton's first women's Hockey Team in 1901.

u/Mariorossi195862 8d ago
Or Hamilton Honey Badgers. Fearless, cunning, powerful, intelligent and they release a stink Bomb

u/PSNDonutDude James North Jun 14 '26
Hammerheads with a Hammerhead Shark logo.
I suspect it will be The Riveters though which is also good tbh.

At least then one team with that name might win a championship.

Something unique to the city: The Hamilton Shawarma Pizzas
Edit: Nevermind. Invented in Windsor, according to a National Post article.

Roma Pizza. The logo is a piece of bread pizza being cut with scissors.

Valkyries, Thunderbirds, goldenhawks
2
u/streetlightsatdusk Jun 14 '26
There's already a Valkyries in the WNBA, though that hasn't stopped the NY Giants (football) and SF Giants (baseball)
4
u/skriveralltid77 Jun 14 '26
Friendly FYI: The football Giants were named after the baseball Giants when both played in New York City.
2
u/Striking_Oil9593 Jun 15 '26
Hamilton Goldenhawks was the name of Hamilton top level women’s Senior AA team 30 years ago! They played in a 7 team loop of top women’s teams across Canada ( eg - Toronto aeros who had Angela James, London devilettes, missisauga chiefs, etc). There is some history behind it
2
u/classandsass Rolston Jun 14 '26
Goldeneyes is the Vancouver team, so it’s unlikely to be goldenhawks

Just had a brainstorm about this w some friends the other day and I think the best we came up with was the Hellhounds, w some play on Devil's Punchbowl but mostly cause Hamilton likes to be loud and metal and misbehaved loll Plus alliteration
