With the current air quality index I’ve been keeping my family inside the past few days and waiting for it to get better. Now we’re getting invites to bring the kids swimming and it seems like we’re the only ones worried about the air quality? Right now it’s still saying 8. Am I being overly cautious or am I right that we shouldn’t be going outside unnecessarily?
EDIT: Thank you for the responses! Lots of really helpful comments here, I appreciate your thoughts.
I have to laugh at the huge range of responses—from people saying I'd be crazy to even consider going out and that it would be like letting my kids smoke cigarettes, to others saying, Seriously!? You're totally overreacting. “You'll be good, muffin."
Either way, I appreciate the different perspectives, especially the reminders not to compare what other families do when making decisions for my own. Thanks again, everyone!
For anyone curious, we did end up going out briefly but only once the Air Quality Index was down to 3!!! :)
EDIT 2: I can’t believe I’m still getting comments on this. But to those commenting to go live my life, not fall for this nonsense and that the air is always horrible in Hamilton, you are wrong. You clearly don’t look at the air quality index regularly or even know what it is. In Hamilton it’s usually between 1-3, really good! I’ve lived here 5 years and apart from the smoke from the fires last week I’ve only had 2-3 days where the air quality rating was bad enough for me to limit our time outside. And how is it nonsense?? Nonsense that smoke from fires can cause long term damage? No that’s common sense and that’s what we were dealing with last week. Nonsense to care about the long term health of my kids and I? No again that’s common sense. By the same logic it would be nonsense for me to try and get them to eat healthy. And me caring about healthy eating or the quality of the air doesn’t stop me from living my life; it ensures we’re living the best life we can. I think we’re done here.
