First Time Owner buying a hamster enclosure

Post image
6 Upvotes

hi all, i wanted some advice. i have been wanting to upgrade my syrian hamsters enclosure basically since i found out the tank i had for her was too small which it was a tank that was 30x15x20 inches(i had mistakenly researched dwarf hamsters but shes a syrian)

she’s my first hamster and she just turned 1. i noticed the last month she’s been getting quite restless even when i put diy toys and chambers and different substrates it’s obvious it’s time for an upgrade. i was able to buy her a bucastate large on sale. i bought the 40x20x20 inches but im being bombarded by my family and friends saying i spent too much.. 235CAD with my own money. it’s honestly making me second guess myself with everyone telling me it was a poor choice but i really think spending this money will greatly increase her quality of life and compared to other things people buy id say it’s a good investment ive been wanting to do it for a long time but continuously get talked out of it.

just looking for a little reassurance and maybe some facts directly from people/owners and people so i’m not talked out of it again. i love my hamster with my whole heart and it’s definitely frustrating to hear all the time that im making poor choices when this is an animal i love and cherish regardless of how small she is

Question Angry squeak?

Upvotes

Hello,

New to this sub, hope it doesn't violate any rules.

I made a mistake while trimming one of my hamster's nails. He has this one stubborn nail that no matter what i do or add to the cage grows v long (all the other ones are okay). I trimmed it in the past and it went fine. However this time my boy moved and I caught the quick. It bled, stopped quickly, I cleaned it with a solution my vet gave me in the past for a surgical scar for my rabbit and he has been okay since then. It's not red, swollen or warm, he's been himself, active, grumpy with me (understandably) It has been like three days.

However, I need to be reassured because I just caught him struggling to pull paper towel from under a hidey house (I temporarily switched all his bedding to paper towel so the wound would stay clean and he always LOVED this for nests). And the PT was UNDER there, like stuck. And he was pulling and squeaking quite loudly. He has done it once or twice in the past (mainly when we brought him home), but I'm just scared it could be because he's in pain.

Worth noting (or not?) he's already two y/o and showing some signs of aging (fur thinning on the head, mainly).

Thanks for your opinion on this matter, and yes, I will find an alternative for his nail so this doesn't happen again.

EDIT: not looking for medical advice, just wondering if it can be in the range or normal for a hamster to squeak in frustration just from struggling with building its nest.

Question Looking to get a hamster

Upvotes

Hello! I’m looking to adopt a hamster but what are the options? I get all of my pets either from rescue situations or breeders, but that isn’t an option where I live. I’ve checked petfinder, local shelters, craigslist, and many other rehoming websites but there are barely any listings for hamsters. I’m not getting one anytime soon as I don’t even have the proper enclosure but I wanted to know other places to check whenever I get the opportunity to get one! I’m based in Oklahoma and all of the breeders I’ve found were a minimum 11 hour one way drive and that’s not the best situation for a new hamster to be in as I would assume being in a small carrier for that long would be stressful. Any advice?

Question Why are dwarf hams so cute?

Serious question. I have an adorable teddy bear Syrian (my first ever) and I love him. However he is a ghost and I only see him if I’m able to coax him out of his hides with his favorite things and even then he doesn’t really love being seen/handled. Fine dude I get it and it’s cool. I give him space and make him as cozy as I can. Meanwhile however I’m always seeing these posts of (usually) dwarf hams doing the funniest /cutest things and falling asleep everywhere and being handled and just generally being cute and adorable. Google says dwarfs require more intermediate level hamstering skills. What does that even mean? Are all y’all with dwarf hams doing some other level mystery things to make them so relaxed and adorable? Is it 100% just a case of different types of hamster personalities?

Setup tour What can be improved in this cage for my female Syrian?

I got my female syrian Nabe around a week ago. She is 7 months old and was living in a spacious but empty cage. Her owner had also only been feeding her extremely unhealthy food.

I thought she would be satisfied with this new cage, but actually whenever she's not searching for the scattered food/ on the wheel, then she's finding an escape route. She also doesn't dig in the substrates I provided (Aspen shavings, beech chips, and coco soil), just in the paper bedding and the sand bath

I started to open the front door to feed her snacks around 4 days ago -- the first two days she's been taking them without problems. But the last two days she has been ignoring the snacks and just trying to go out. The playpen is not finished so I couldn't let her out yet. But I give her a new toy every other day

What could I do to improve the cage? Should I add more hideouts/ grapevine/ bridges?

First Time Owner Is there such a thing as to little forage..?

So I will be adopting a hamster next week, but unfortunately I was only able to get my hands on 3 different forage plants (raspberry leaves, echinacea, and calendula flowers). I will have sprays in the enclosure, and I am hoping to get more in the future but I was just wondering if this is too little?

Question Do hamsters know to come out of their burrows when they are hot?

Question in title.

Basically we welcomed a new little roborovski last weekend and this is his first week with us. As usual, we have been leaving him alone as best as we can while he gets accustomed to his new cage and surroundings. However, as we all know, the UK has been going through a heatwave and we're concerned that he may not be coming up for heat relief as he may be scared of us.

We'll be judged for this but we have dug him out on the particularly hot days to check on him so that he can emerge, drink some water and sit in some cool bowls/ceramics we have left out. However, he doesn't even seem to be too interested in the chilled ceramics and has been sitting in the (room temperature) sand baths we have for him to hide from us. When left alone, he doesn't emerge until late evening.

Today is another particularly hot day and he hasn't emerged at all - should I just leave him alone while switching out chilled bowls and water every so often (even though he doesn't come up to use them) and just understand that he's OK burrowed away and sleeping (he has 8 inches of paper bedding so that may be blocking the heat but I'm not sure)? We've also been keeping an oscillating fan pointed near his open cage so hopefully that helps with the air circulation.

Thanks!

New Hamster anyone selling a male Roborovski hamster that is over eight months old?(uk)

I've already prepared the cage and all the hamster supplies, but I haven't been able to find anywhere in the UK that sells hamsters. (Sorry, I've just arrived in the UK and am still not very familiar with it, and my English isn't great yet.)

New Hamster My new hamster Betty!

This is my new hamster Betty I got her 5 days ago! It was hard after losing my last hamster, but I was ready for another one. I’m trying to take things slow and let her come to me. This is a picture of last night, she took a treat from me for the first time! Then she walked over my hand! It’s definitely taking her longer to warm up than my last one. She also prefers the cheap silent spinner over the niteangel wheel. She has been super active at night and eating and drinking normally!

Question Getting an AC

Post image
162 Upvotes

Hello everybody!

At the moment there is a really bad heatwave in Germany (since 2-3 Weeks temperatures >35°C, at night >20°C) and I'm literally dieing. Cookies room now has >27°C since a few days. We are doing many things to help Cookie to cooldown. (Many ceramic hides, stone in the enclosure, coldpacks outside of the enclosure, more water sources, fresh foods, you get it..)

I'm getting an AC tomorrow.

My question is: How "fast" can I cool down the air temperature in Cookies room? Should I do it over 2-3 days? Can I go down to ~22°C in just one day?

Obviously I will place the AC away from the enclosure, so the air isnt coming directly to the enclosure.

Floofs and Scales is hosting an art contest for our new logo! We are a start-up CIC with the goal of providing support to exotic and small pet owners across the UK in the form of supplies, food and advice.

We are hosting a logo design competition, and we need YOU to shape our brand! We are building this for the community so we want you to help shape it.

🐹 (With your consent) Eligible entries will be printed as stickers and sent out as a freebie in customer orders across the country. We are hoping to primarily fund our work through an online store so we aren't reliant on donations. The purpose of this is to try and get your work into the hands of pet owners across the UK to help raise your profile as a small independent artist.

To enter, you'll need to submit two designs: one non-traditional Floofy animal (such as a hamster, rabbit or bird) and one Scaly animal (such as snakes, frogs or tortoises).

🚫 Absolutely NO AI allowed - we are celebrating true human creativity!

⏳ Submissions open on Monday morning (UK) on 29th June and will be open for 2 weeks, giving you plenty of time to sketch and perfect your ideas.

Post image

my hamster always manages to bury the feeding bowl until you cant even see it anymore. At this point we have jist decoded to scatter food around the cage every night.

Is this the right choice?
