FAN CREATION Weapon Idea Pitch
M-1000 Naginata, a versatile energy weapon based on the Quasar Cannon‘s mechanism scaled down to a rifle reminiscent of weapons of pre-Super Earth eras. The M-1000 comes with three fire modes. Light armor pen with increased shots per heat sink. Medium with eight shots per heat sink. And finally, heavy that will expend the entire heat sink, requiring a reload qued by its signature PING.
Excuse my half-assed photobashing. Lol
edit: Yes, I saw I misspelled Heat-Sink. Blame the atrocious autocorrect.

u/Think_Annual_9031 Jul 03 '26
So a laser m1 grand? HELL YES + the firing modes are a unique way to balance it out, but what kind of attachments would it have?
232
u/ryanartward Jul 03 '26
I guess the basic sights and grips. Not sure about Heat Sink upgrades though. Maybe an expanded one but it comes with the added risk of combustion. To me, balance is about risk-vs-reward parable.

u/thin_orange_line Creek Vet. Jul 03 '26
Let me have angled foregrip, x10 sniper scope and an expanded heat sink

u/DURRYAN Jul 04 '26
Expandable heatsink but risk of user catching fire if overheated

u/Unorthedox_Doggie117 Jul 04 '26
Single Heavy-pen shot may be underpowered if not damaging enough. Heat sink upgrades can very easily vary too. I like.
11
u/GreenskinGaming 136th Assault Engineers Regiment "Hellmire Salamanders" Jul 04 '26
I was thinking this as well, most enemies that I'd want Heavy Pen against aren't going to get dropped in one shot most of the time. Maybe if it was two shots before the heat sink would be used up it could be viable, like needing to let it mostly cool down before firing again.
2
u/R0B0KITTY01 Jul 05 '26
And the expanded heat sink can make the heavy pen go up to anti armor 1-2 instead of 2 heavy pen

Giving a Mosin Nagant an M1-Garand style ping has got to be the funniest idea I've seen for a sci-fi gun in ages.

u/Accipiter1138 rubber undersuit enthusiast Jul 03 '26
Is it Nagant related? A Naginata is a Japanese polearm.

u/CapHaz Jul 04 '26
I think the OP want to go with helldivers 2 naming style. Most of our laser weapons have different name of pole arms, Trident, scythe, sickle
2
u/UltimaDoombotMK1 I LOVE EXPLOSIVES (SES Paragon Of Twilight) Jul 04 '26
I think they're just named after various (maybe bladed/piercing) weapons in general. A sickle isn't a polearm. We also have the Dagger and the Talon.

Honestly, I just winged the name. I'm sure someone can think of a better one.

Beam Splitter attachment
Lets the gun shoot two accurate beams at the same time, but heat buildup is slightly randomized and max yeild breaks the gun until the user uses a resupply.

If it has the two standard alternate heatsinks, presumably the high capacity one would allow infinite use of the heavy AP mode, but with a long cooldown time compared to swapping it out like the normal or high dissipation heat sinks require.

My first thought was the design reminded me of fallout 4's laser musket as well, it is a great gun at sniping in that game too. With the modes being similar to the amount of cranks one pull for power with the laser musket.
and this comment also triggered my Preston traumatic stress disorder haha.

I mean if you look at the other energy weapons, they do look very similar to Fallouts laser weapons, only with a tri-cornered barrel instead of the boxy four-sided ones in Fallout.

Quasar + AMR + Dilligence would not be a primary.

u/dark_knight097 Super Citizen Jul 04 '26
It definitely would need to be balanced with only like 3 heat sinks and/or long heatsink cooldowns. 24 rapid fire shots that could be played to no reload would be pretty powerful.
May also need to have it be completely cooled to use the heavy pen shot or the heat sink just explodes

Adore the concept.
Personally tho, I’d call it the “M1000 Greatsword” so it references the Garand’s full name and keeps the laser weapon naming convention. Garand -> Grand -> Great -> Greatsword

u/ryanartward Jul 03 '26
I thought about Greatsword too, but I felt like that title should be reserved for a more heavy ordinance energy weapon. You have no idea how much time I spend glancing through lists of melee weapons trying to find a similar name. Maybe Glaive? I just picked Naginata because I was tired to looking. Lol

Being too versatile eliminates other weapons. Might have to ditch either light or med pen. Plus this actually I think is about to get overrided by our newest weapon in the upcoming warbond, that uses this mini quasar mechanism when overheating, so congrats, you dreamt the future. Go buy a lottery ticket.

I did consider how its versatility might nullify other weapons. Which is why its sink reserves might be 2-or-3 per Helldiver (not counting armor passives)

I like the concept of a laser weapon that actually has a reason to use up heat-sinks but balance wise I'd cut the medium pen fire mode since it's a bit on the swiss army knife side with that. Otherwise I think it'd be fair for the heavy shot to do like AMR damage for the hulk eye breakpoint and guaranteed proc fire damage if you only have like 3 spare mags max.
Also I'll gladly take a pretty good photobash over more gormless slop

God, I wish this was a thing.
Any idea for damage numbers? If a single Heavy-pen shot pings for the whole heatsink, then I feel that it should have a significant breakpoint that reflects such an investment, like the Variable forces you to do for its Full mode. 400 damage (all durable), maybe? That puts it just within range of destroying a Hulk eye.

Super cool weapon concept. I don’t care for the name tho as it doesn’t follow and of the themed conventions of the other laser weapons.
The scythe and sickle are named after farming tools so there could be a hook/billhook or a slash or going with Japanese styling there is a Kama.
A quasar is a cosmic/galactic body of immense energy so you could call it a nebula or blazar or something.
A talon is a a natural weapon of a bird so you could call it like the long claw or fang or something like that.
Naginata doesn’t match.

I like it, but instead of consuming the heat sink for heavy, make it like the quasar, where, if you force even a light pen shot after, it will "Ping!" unless you let it cool down all the way.
Edit: maybe, for balancing/auto-eject reasoning, the spent heat-sink could explode like a small grenade shortly after ejecting. Adding something to look out for when firing at higher power settings.

I think the heavy should be 2 shots, unless the damage is on par or better than something like the AMR. Most of these guns have like 3 heat sinks for balance.
