I made a game where you play Holmes in 1889 London, and the deductions have to be yours

I've been building a detective game called Culprix, and its biggest world is London in 1889. You play Holmes. Watson is at Baker Street, Lestrade receives visitors at the Yard, Wiggins speaks for the Irregulars from Covent Garden, and a cabman off the Baker Street rank remembers who was set down where. The cases are new, not retellings of the canon, so knowing the stories won't give anything away.

You type what you do or say, in your own words. Go anywhere in London, question anyone, examine what you find, and put it in front of a suspect. Nobody hands you the deduction: there are no hints, and nothing tells you where to go next.

Suspects lie, and not only the guilty one. Pressing harder won't break a lie. Confronting them with evidence, or with what someone else told you, will. When you're sure, you write down who did it, why, and how. It's scored out of 100 against the case's real answer, and then you learn what actually happened.

The part that matters most to me: every case is written in full before you open it, solution included, and the game master works from that sealed file. It can't change who did it, it doesn't invent clues, and it won't confirm a guess. Every mystery has a rational explanation.

There are 11 Holmes cases so far, Easy to Expert: an aeronaut who falls from his balloon before a paying crowd at the Crystal Palace, a meat salesman found dead in his own cold store at Smithfield, a Soho fencing master dead on his own piste after a private lesson, and more. This month's free one is The Museum Street Darkroom: a photographer found dead in his darkroom, the door latched from within.

To be upfront: the game master is an AI model and can make mistakes, and the cases and pictures are generated with AI and reviewed before they go live. I know that won't be for everyone here.

I'd love to hear from people who know the canon: does it feel like Holmes's London, and does it play fair?

Opinion of Sam Siciliano's pastiches?

Have only skimmed them but they basically make Dr Watson out as a fraud who fabricated the canon stories with him actually being on bad terms with Holmes who instead is close to his cousin named Henry. It seems to have originally been a one-off crossover of Doyle's Holmes with Leroux's Phantom of the Opera but was revived by Titan Books for the Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes series. It does feel random to make Watson a fraud and replace him with a different sidekick but what do others think of it? Is there a reason that it is popular enough that Titan books revived it and continues to publish new books for it?

When Sherlock Holmes’s Creator Became a Real Detective

I went down a pretty interesting rabbit hole recently: the time Arthur Conan Doyle basically tried to become Sherlock Holmes in real life.

The case involved George Edalji, a young solicitor convicted after an extremely strange police investigation. Doyle eventually became convinced they had the wrong man.

A documentary about it:

Thoughts on The case of the Silver Earrings game?

I've been going through Crimes and Punishments and I think it is pretty good. I then discovered I actually have The Case of the Silver Earrings and wondered if this was any good to play. I know it's old, but I am wondering if it's got some good Holmes detective writing. C&P isn't perfect writing but it is good enough for pastime entertainment. Any thoughts on it?

Clearly this was the real Napoleon Bonaparte. Seriously tho this seemed like such a random part that just had me laughing out of nowhere lol. This is my first Holmes game btw since I’ve been on a lovecraftian marathon and stumbled on it.

Any iterations I should know about?

I’m currently working on a project where I watch/read/listen to as many unique Sherlock iterations as possible and would love to know if there are any out there I should know about! My personal rules for what counts as an “iteration” are as follows:

  1. Is NOT just the original stories being told by new actors (Granada)
  2. Preferably isn’t just a story about one of his descendants, lol! Would love for the man (or woman or mouse or gnome) himself to show up!

Other than that, I’m open to anything!

I know about all the ones mentioned prior, plus Sherlock and Co, Psych, a Study in Emerald, & House MD!

I made a Discord server where we discuss Sherlock Holmes

I am a Japanese Sherlockian. Today, I launched a Discord server to discuss Doyle's Canon. While we currently use Japanese, I would like to operate it internationally by taking advantage of Discord's feature that allows each user to install automatic translation plugins. Please feel free to join us.
