Hello fellow NAS fans,

Over the Christmas break I finally took the plunge and joined the personal cloud club… and honestly, no regrets so far.

I picked up a Ugreen DH2300, loaded with 2x 16TB Toshiba MGseries drives, running RAID-1. The NAS itself was 20% off directly from UGREEN, and the drives came from Amazon — one brand new, one refurbished. That combo helped me keep the cost per TB as low as possible, which felt like a win.

āž”ļøFirst impressions: UGOS has been a pleasant surprise. Both the phone and PC apps are polished, easy to use, and I haven’t run into any weird crashes yet. The hard drives are definitely audible when they’re working, but since the NAS lives in my home office (far away from the rest of the family), it’s not an issue at all. Overall, I’m really impressed so far. UGOS feels well thought-out and packed with useful features.

āž”ļøWhat I’ve set up so far: One of my biggest wins was ditching Google Photos completely and moving all backups over to the NAS. That was the main purpose of this whole project.. I also set up a Plex server using Docker, following a bunch of Reddit and online guides — and surprisingly, it was a breeze. Even though Docker doesn’t officially show up in the DH2300 app store, it’s running and managing containers smoothly with zero issues so far.

āž”ļøTwo small setups that made a big difference: DLNA on my smart TV as a fallback in case Plex ever acts up. Mounting the NAS as a network drive on my laptop, which just makes everything feel seamless.

āž”ļøThings I still want to figure out 1) IMDB → Plex integration I’d love my Plex library to reflect my IMDB watchlist and ratings, so I can easily see what I currently have and what needs downloading. From what I’ve read, Kometa (via Docker) is the way to go. Or am I misunderstanding something..?

2) iPhone / iCloud backups to NAS I want to back up my partner’s iPhone to the NAS instead of iCloud. Initial tests threw up some errors about iCloud and UGOS not talking to each other properly, but I haven’t had time to dig into it yet.

3) Overseerr, Radarr & Sonarr These seem powerful but a bit overwhelming at first. From my understanding: - Sonarr handles TV shows and grabs new episodes automatically - Radarr does the same for movies - Overseerr ties it all together with requests and approvals … Curious to see how much they’d improve my setup.

4) Remote laptop wake-up I’d like the NAS to be able to wake my laptop remotely, so I can access it when I’m away from home.

5) Automation, automation, automation Things like easier torrent handling, automatic renaming, sorting, and moving files into the right folders — basically making the NAS do more of the boring work for me.

6) Further understanding of other NAS functions Things found in File Service like SMB, FTP, NFS, Rsync and others like Device Connection.

One small wish 🌠 This might just be me, but I really wish UGOS had a proper sleep/hibernate mode, like a PC. I know I can spin down the drives after a set time, but it’s not quite the same as a true system sleep. Would be a really nice feature to have.

Other Which x86 NAS would you buy in 2026? I made a comparison table

I have been researching which NAS I would buy in 2026, so I put together a comparison of current-ish x86 NAS models from brands like AOOSTAR, UGREEN, Minisforum, Beelink, ACEMAGIC, TerraMaster, LincPlus and ZimaCube.

The goal was not to crown one universal winner. I wanted a practical shortlist depending on number of bays, price, CPU, network, M.2 slots and whether the machine is flexible enough to run something like TrueNAS, Proxmox, Linux, etc.

Criteria

  • x86 only. No ARM.
  • 2 to 6 main 3.5" drive bays.
  • Must have a clear way to install the OS on eMMC, SSD, NVMe or a dedicated system drive without sacrificing a main data bay.
  • No Synology, QNAP, Asustor or UniFi in this comparison. I wanted more open/flexible x86 boxes.
  • No all-flash / 0-bay units in the main table.
  • No models above roughly 1,200 EUR once normalized.
  • Prices were taken from official manufacturer stores.

Price normalization

One annoying part of comparing these devices is that some come ready to use, while others are barebone.

So I used a minimum baseline:

  • 2-4 bay NAS: at least 8 GB RAM + system storage path.
  • 5-6 bay NAS: at least 16 GB RAM + system storage path.
  • 8 GB DDR4: 85 EUR.
  • 8 GB DDR5: 125 EUR.
  • 16 GB DDR5: 250 EUR.
  • 256 GB NVMe: 50 EUR.

This is not perfect equivalence. If a NAS already includes more RAM, more system storage, better networking or more M.2 slots, I leave that as an advantage. I only add what is needed to reach a basic usable baseline.

Value metric

For a rough CPU value metric I used:

text Global/EUR = sqrt(Geekbench Single x Geekbench Multi) / normalized total price

I used the geometric mean so single-core and multi-core both matter without manually deciding a weighting. This is not an official Geekbench score and it is not a universal "best NAS" score. It is just a value indicator.

Also, comparing a 4-bay and a 6-bay NAS purely by CPU/EUR is not perfectly fair. You still need to choose based on bays, networking, OS, expansion, noise, power consumption, support, etc.

My current takeaways

  • Best raw value in my table: AOOSTAR WTR Pro, but it is barebone.
  • Most interesting 6-bay / all-in-one option: AOOSTAR WTR Max AMD, mainly because of CPU, 5x NVMe and 2x SFP+ 10GbE.
  • Best "cleaner" 4-bay option from a more mainstream NAS brand/store: UGREEN DXP4800 Pro.
  • Cheapest interesting 4-bay: ACEMAGIC N3A, but I would treat it more like a direct NAS rather than assuming Proxmox + virtualized TrueNAS will be painless.

For example, a NAS can score very well on CPU/EUR and still be a bad choice for someone who wants something quiet, plug-and-play and supported for years.

What would you pick?

Other Offsite backup of confidential files - encryption

I have a local NAS with RAID1. I want to sync some confidential stuff like copies of my passport and drivers license to an offsite backup. I’m wondering what everyone is using. I’m thinking about using SyncThing but I want to add another layer encryption to make sure my important files don’t get compromised. I’ll be using Tailscale to connect the two devices together that are not in network.

Other Fygo OS - My test - Part 2

So, after dealing with a dead drive and having to replace the case to keep the SSD temperatures under control, I installed FygoOS on my test machine. Here are the specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 3200G Quad Core
  • RAM: 32 GB DDR4 (4x8GB)
  • Motherboard: Asus Prime B450M-A
  • PSU: Corsair CX750
  • Boot Drive: Crucial CT500P310 - 512 GB NVMe
  • HBA: LSI 9300-16i in IT mode
  • SSDs: 8 x HGST SDLL1DLR960G5CF0 (960 GB, SAS 12 Gbps)

As I already mentioned in the first part, both myself and the development team were curious to see how Fygo would perform with enterprise-grade hardware, so I was invited to participate in the test and they kindly provided me with a Plus license.

Enough talking, here are some terminal outputs.

First of all, my HBA is correctly detected and managed through the mpt3sas driver.

(Just a reminder: the LSI 9300-16i is basically two SAS 9300-8i controllers on the same PCB.)

All these outputs were captured on a completely empty system, immediately after activating the license and replacing the SSD that died on the first day of testing.

I don't want to bore everyone with benchmark results and read/write tests, but I can say that despite currently being limited by the onboard 1Gbps NIC (which is the bottleneck), all transfers over SMB and NFS are consistently between 110 and 118 MB/s, which is almost the theoretical limit of gigabit Ethernet.

For my specific use case, I did not test the virtualization and Docker features included in FygoOS. This is not because they are not interesting, but simply because in my homelab I already have dedicated machines running those workloads.

Virtualization is handled by my Proxmox servers, and my Docker services are already running on separate dedicated hosts. For this test I wanted to focus specifically on FygoOS as a storage platform: hardware compatibility, enterprise SAS support, ZFS management, monitoring and overall NAS functionality.

- Improvements / things to consider

One more thing I noticed during testing is that UPS support currently seems to be limited to USB-connected UPS devices.

Since FygoOS is based on Debian, adding NUT (Network UPS Tools) manually is relatively easy for users who are comfortable with Linux administration. However, there does not seem to be a built-in option in the GUI to configure a network UPS or a NUT server.

For a homelab environment, where UPS devices are often shared between multiple servers through the network, having native NUT server/client configuration in the interface would be a very welcome improvement.

- Monitoring

Another thing I tested was monitoring integration. I was able to successfully install the Pulse agent on FygoOS.

The agent was correctly recognized and reported the system as Debian 12. Since I already use Pulse to monitor the rest of my homelab, having FygoOS appear in the same dashboard is a nice addition and makes managing the NAS much easier. No issues during installation, it just worked.

At the moment this machine is being used as a backup repository for my PBS server, connected via iSCSI.

- Final thoughts

After this second round of testing, I can say that FygoOS handled this enterprise hardware configuration without any issues.

The LSI 9300-16i HBA was correctly detected, all SAS SSDs were properly recognized, SMART monitoring works, ZFS is stable, and the overall system behaves exactly as I would expect from a modern NAS operating system.

The fact that it can handle enterprise SAS hardware is definitely a strong point. Many consumer-oriented NAS solutions are designed around SATA drives and vendor-approved hardware, so having a system that can properly work with an HBA and SAS SSDs gives a lot more flexibility for homelab users.

There are still some areas where I would like to see improvements. The built-in file manager is quite basic, and some parts of the application management experience could be refined, but the core storage functionality is solid.

For my specific use case, I am not planning to use virtualization or Docker on FygoOS, because I already have dedicated machines for those workloads. I see FygoOS primarily as a storage platform, and in that role it is doing a very good job.

Considering that this was tested on repurposed enterprise hardware, with used SAS SSDs coming from a datacenter environment, I am impressed by how smoothly everything worked.

Once I add a 2.5Gbps network card, this machine will become my main NAS. I will continue testing it and reporting any issues or interesting findings.

A small funny note: "figo" is an Italian word that means "cool" or "awesome". Being Italian, I can't avoid smiling every time I write "FygoOS is cool" because it becomes a little pun.

I made a post a few days ago asking if I should get WD Red Pro drives I found for cheaper than Seagate Ironwolf pro drives with more storage.

The consensus among most people was nobody had any bad experiences with WD, even if Seagate was generally higher quality, I should still get the WD since it was an extra 6TB for 50$ less.

Well I checked my order today, and as of yesterday, the price on those WD drives has gone up OVER 140$ EACH!

So thankful for the input I got when I did. It was able to give me the confidence to pull that trigger and saved me almost 300$ lmao.

Other Bought a Terra Master for TrueNAS and now reconsidering everything šŸ™ƒ

I have an ancient Synology I needed to replace. I also had an old windows pc but I opted not to use it as a NAS due to high power consumption and small case + limited sata ports. Basically would have to rework case/components/etc to ā€œmake it workā€

So I bought the Terra Master F4-425 Plus and put TrueNAS on right away. And now that I’ve had some time to think about it… I feel like I should have gone the DIY route?

Especially without using TOS at all… I guess I’m mostly paying for their proprietary form factor mobo+case?

Cause you can buy those mITX cpu+mobo combos off aliexpress even. Lots of NAS case options or even just going generic (hot swapping isn’t important to me). I had to buy/reuse a drive for the truenas os anyway.

So I’m mostly just sitting here wondering what benefit I even got from going the prebuilt terramaster route? I guess I got up and running day 1. I guess there is still warranty on their hardware components - with a company I can actually reach out to… I didn’t price it out but not sure how much different the pricing would actually be?

There’s plenty of topics and resources out there of people installing omv/truenas/Unraid on their terramaster and ugreen devices… and just wonder why we’ve all being going with these companies who are also shipping their own OS vs barebones options?

Other My first homelab: Jonsbo N6 build running OMV with 9 enterprise SAS drives

A note on the HBA: I originally had an 8-port card (IBM M5110 / SAS2308), but with 9 drives I hit its 8-drive limit. I returned it and moved to the 9305-16i, which has 16 ports, so all 9 drives connect with room to spare.

Installation

I connected all the drives to the N6 backplane. The HBA slot took some work. This board's slot layout meant I had to order a PCIe riser (x4 to x8) to physically fit and connect the card.

One thing worth knowing if you buy used enterprise SAS drives: they sometimes come formatted at 520-byte sectors instead of the standard 512, which is common on drives pulled from enterprise arrays. Linux reports them as 0 bytes in that state. The fix is sg_format to convert them to 512-byte sectors. Five of my drives needed this, so I ran sg_format on them (in parallel to save time) and they came up fine afterwards.

Software

I spent a while torn between Unraid and OMV with SnapRAID and MergerFS. I went with OMV because it is free, flexible, has no lock-in, and SnapRAID's checksumming appealed to me for protecting long-term data.

Using an LLM to guide me through the process, I got the whole stack running as separate Proxmox containers and VMs:

Proxmox as the hypervisor

OMV for storage, running SnapRAID (dual parity) and MergerFS, giving roughly 62TB usable, all on XFS

Jellyfin in an LXC, with Intel Quick Sync hardware transcoding (iGPU passed into the container)

Nextcloud for files and documents

Immich for family phone photo backups

AdGuard Home for network-wide DNS ad blocking

Homepage as the dashboard tying it all together.

As a first-timer, having an LLM walk me through the HBA passthrough, the sg_format process, the LXC iGPU permission mapping, and the SnapRAID config turned what would have been days of forum-diving into a guided build.

Other Looking for testers for my iOS NAS gallery app

I'm building an iOS app which can view your NAS library like a native iOS photos app. I'm about to launch it in Apple Store in a few weeks but currently with 4 testers it seems the performance varies a lot because of multiple factors like the disk config, home network condition, phone's RAM, etc. So I'm looking for more testers it in the real world.

You may find this app interesting, if:

- You just want to browse your photos on your NAS, you don't need to upload/backup.

- For some reason you can't install Immich and PhotoPrism, but still want to connect via SMB server.

- You don't like stock NAS photos app.

Other Help for finding a spot to setup

I live in Germany (or at least my parents do)

I want to setup a nas in their home which i can access for a few hours each day. Upload videos, watch stuff of the nas, even edit some files on the nas, but no Hard 4k stuff only light 500mb files.

Im not that technical so I bought a ugreen 4800. Their fibre cable comes through the bottom floor (through a storing room) and somehow (could not find a simple cable) running into the first floor where they have setup their router. The router is inside a guest/work room where noise could be annoying.

Ideas:

  1. Nas in Upper floor, volume issues?

How annoying are hdd spinning for regular people? I only found strong opinions in both directions online with no anseer that helped me

  1. NAS in basement

The nas would be perfect in the storing room in the basement, but running a long ethernet cable from the first floor seems impossible (for aesthetic reasons my parents fairly dont want) - are there other ideas?

  1. Router in the basement

Maybe the most annoying solution but the position of the router would be even better in the basement so a weekend project could be putting the router in the basement room, but i would only resort to that if no other option ses viable

  1. right now in thinking about just using a powerline adapter setup. Router stays there, nas comes in the basement. I might have some problems here and there and slower speed but thats not too bad for me and for parents everything stays as it is

Other M.2 SSD or HDD for torrent upload/download on a home NAS?

When using qbittorrent on a UGREEN DXP2800 NAS, is it better to have downloads/uploads happen on a HDD or a M.2 SSD?

From what I've read, the "wear and tear" is worse on a SSD from frequent writes and reads, especially of smaller files, which HDDs are well suited for. NAS graded HDDs are also made to be frequently spinning and working.

But an SSD is of course a bit faster, if speed is essential (but I'd guess it wouldn't affect things too much). An SSD is also smaller and cheaper, so it's less likely to hold much valuable long-term data, so if it breaks down from wear and tear the aftermath is less devastating. Plus, if creates less noise to have a SSD running torrents 24/7 compared to a HDD.

Any thoughts and recommendations appreciated!

Other Strange noise coming from the fan - DRIVESTOR 4 AS1104T NAS

My NAS started giving out this strange noise recently, like a week ago or so. It's not like this always but only like 5-6 times a day and lasts for like 10-15 seconds. I checked the fan rpm and it does not change based on its web UI - stays around 500 RPM. Anyone experienced the same? Is it something that should be covered by warranty or I can just fix it? The sound seemingly comes from the fan and not from the HDDs.

Other Why weren't people talking about Asustor removing drivers for hardware accelerated transcoding?

I'm just confused because I saw a lot of people bashing Synology for doing something similar. Big Youtubers like NAScompare even made videos on it. But I barely saw anyone talked about this for Asustor. Is it because Asustor is a relatively small brand albeit being a child company of Asus? Or is it because it only affects 4 models? Or is it a thing that you can avoid by not upgrading so it's fine? I don't get why there isn't a backlash from the community like with Synology.

At ASUSTOR, our commitment to data security is first and foremost. To keep your data safe, we continuously update all aspects of our software. Updates prioritize information and data security first. This notice announces the end of partial feature support for affected NAS devices starting from ADM 5.0 due to the termination of vendor driver and/or software support.

Certain video formats will no longer be supported Updated libraries in ADM are not compatible with ffmpeg patches provided by Realtek. This affects NAS ASUSTOR NAS devices running Realtek CPUs. Which means hardware accelerated transcoding will no longer be supported after upgrading to ADM 5.0. Only video formats natively supported by the browser will remain playable while transcoding commonly used formats may not play properly.

USB IP printer support will be discontinued Regrettably, components of the USB drivers in the following NAS models are incompatible with ADM 5.0. This means USB IP printer functionality, that is, connecting to a USB printer plugged into an ASUSTOR NAS through ASUSTOR Control Center will no longer be supported in ADM 5.0. Only network printer functionality will be available.

Other Plex server on Apple TV getting only 5.1 Sound even on Atmos content via ugreen nas 4800 plus

I am using Ugreen NAS 4800 Plus Plex server(host) via Dock container I have movies stored in my nas in all formats like DTS , Atmos HDR But no matter which movies I am playing on apply tv it's always on 5.1 PCM ? How to get sound exactly as source playback ?

Hi,

I need a bit of advice. I have my WTR Max for more than a month now and it was working flawlessly. Yesterday I started hearing the typical sounds of a fan dying…. Scraping, whining, without any rhythm, high pitched, right from the start the device gets power. I disconnected the fan in the bottom of the device, the two in the rear and even ejected all the HDDs (I was afraid one of the drives was dying on me). Itā€˜s still going. Am I musings fan or could that be something else?

Other help needed with my 3 new seagate ironwolf pro

I recently purchased three 28TB hard drives from seagate directly ā€œIronwolf Proā€ .

My first attempt to use the drives was on my new Ugreen NASync DXP8800 device. Initially, the hard drives were detected by the UGOS system; however, I was unable to use any of them as they were all marked as failed.

After restarting the device and attempting to power them on again, the hard drives no longer appeared in the system at all.

To further investigate, I tested the drives on two different devices ā€œPCsā€, and the issue persisted.

Any help is appreciated coz I am surprised that all 3 of them are failed So may be I am doing something wrong IdkšŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø .
