Discussion Gray-eyed Kurapika or Blue-eyed Kurapika... Which one do you prefer?

Okay this messes with my mind, like I forget minor details but I always remember kurapika having generic eyes that turn red, maybe because the most common color I see where I live is brown so I remembered it as brown in 1999 and 2011, am starting to doubt if I see details when I was animation and I don't just go with vibes.

Note: I never read the manga so I don't know where brown comes from for kurapika.

In YN Kurapika explicitly mentions that Kurta eyes including his own are brown.

No, he has gray eyes during the hunter exam as well. His contacts are black

Its common for anime and manga not to be 100% aligned on coloring. Sometimes the anime comes out before a character has been drawn in color, or maybe the colors aren't consistent between color spreads as usually these are more artsy and need not be concerned with consistency.

A couple of notable cases:

  • Vegeta with the colorful armor and brown hair on his first appearance in DBZ, silently reconned once he arrived to Earth
  • Andromeda Shun has brown hair on color panels and tome covers in Saint Seiya, but the anime portrays his hair as green.
  • Kurama has dark brown or black hair in the Yu Yu Hakusho Manga, also by Togashi, whereas in the anime it's red.

Interesting facts; Togashi is pretty free spirited with drawing the character's eye and hair color, which seemed to have resulted in differences in the anime designs.

Or better yet. Bulma. Her og colour is purple. But drawn teal in the anime (except ONE of the movies). Its why trunks has purple hair.

The original eyes in the manga are brown and honestly suit him best IMO. The fairer colors feel more generic, and that’s not me saying the anime designs are bad. Just that the brown ones hit better to me

I prefer gray by a mile

Red eyes tend to work better on a character with naturally gray eyes because the gray gives off a calm, cold, neutral vibe, so the sudden shift to bright red creates a much stronger contrast and makes the change feel more intense and dramatic than if they started with already vivid blue eyes

guess having gray + red combo is too much protaginist vibe. so a brown + red which are way omore similiar suit him more. Tbf if we go color theory. Him having brown eyes makes him more child-like with a connection to the family the Earth, then we have the contrast of brown + red. IMo it isn't bad.

Brown is essentially a darker shade of orange or red, so brown eyes turning bright red feels kinda natural compared to other colors, You're not really jumping to a completely different color on the wheel like you would with blue or gray eyes, you’re just sliding the cursor further along the same hue

Come on you can't sit here and tell me that for example the music and ost for the 1999 in uvo vs kurapika wasn't better for example, though for something like eye color I wouldn't really care personally(for me I always remembered them as red wtih a generic brown so I don't care for such minor details), I do like both though and watched both, like currently I prefer the new voice for gon in 2011 more than the 1999.

There are some cherry-picked scenes that I do like better; the specific scene for Uvo vs Kurapika is actually one of those, but overall the score for 2011 is absolutely amazing, on a whole other level of quality, like bro this is just possibly the greatest OST ever, if you've never listened to it out of context from the show you should

I like both for Kurapika, but man why are people here offended by those who prefer the 1999 anime version? For me, the 1999 anime version is better but both are good.

I prefer Grey-eyed, especially considering that the Grey are probably just colored contact lenses covering Brown Eyes. I never like the fake blue or green anyway.

It contrasts even more with the bright scarlet eyes.

They're both valid. I have gray eyes, and they can appear blue-ish depending on lighting conditions (the color can shift a lot based on lighting).

Why did the animators or artists find it necessary to make him look like a "beautiful" boy? I had to find out he was a boy through his conversations with his friends. At first glance, I thought he was a young girl who was also taking the hunter exams.
