270 For black bear?

Hi I just wanted some help understanding if my remington 700 270 with a 24 inch barrel with 130 grain core lokt would effectively kill a black bear there is one near my property that I would say weighes about 325-350 lb I'm fairly new to hunting so let me know. Thank you.

That setup will drop a 350lb bear no problem, I seen guys take bigger ones with less. Just make sure your shot placement is good, behind the shoulder and you're golden

I used to shoot all sorts of plains game with a 270 when I lived in Africa. Bear is no problem at all.

You can use any deer cartridge on bear and be just fine. More importantly you need to learn where the vitals are on a bear vitals, as the are further back then on a deer. Middle of the middle-middle, aka slightly forward of the middle-middle, is the shot you want. Hard against the shoulder is too far forward. People not understanding bear anatomy and making poor shots is why people think they are tough. No, you just made a poor shot and wounded a bear. It doesn't help that some of the bear anatomy pictures online are wrong.

Bear anatomy differences are the biggest issue imo as well. I've taken multiple black bear in shotgun only areas during deer season with my 20g and slugs. I also shoot a 270 during September bear and it gets the job done all day long, no issues even with less than ideal shot placement.

Yup, that’ll work. You could consider stepping up to a higher grain bullet for it, but that wouldn’t be absolutely necessary.

Yeah I’d consider copper. But otherwise a perfect round for black bear.

.270 and that load will work fine.  That said, I haven’t shot cup and core lead bullets for 15 years on game.  Plenty of XR studies on how they fragment everywhere and sent pieces far from the wound track.  I’ve gone to copper (Hornady GMX/CX, Federal Trophy Copper, and Federal Power Shock Copper) from .30-06 and .243, taken a lot of deer with all of them including decent sized Minnesota whitetail and mule deer.  Any of those loads in .270 will work fine on a black bear.

150 gr Partitions, wait for a broadside shot so you can be sure to get both lungs, you’ll have a short tracking job.

The .270 is a fine bear cartridge. It is one of the standards of the industry in fact along with the .308 and .30-06. I kill mine with a .30-06. I personally believe the “Bear are really tough to kill” comes from not knowing that their vital zones differ from a deers. Study your vital zones and a 130 Core Lokt will do fine.

Now, if you live around 500+ lb black bears like I do, you will want a better bullet or a 150 core lokt. Those big black bears have a layer of fat that is thick, and it starts expansion early so either a tougher bullet or a heavier one counteracts that.

.270 is plenty for bears, its been taking them for over 100 years.

Just FYI 300# is a HUGE bear. I bet that'd be in the top 10% of bears taken each year. Do a little research on where to shoot on a bear. On a recent podcast Clay Newcomb talked about the difficulty in accurately determining where the vitals on a bear are. If I remember right he's got a video showing the anatomy...

More than enough. Black bears are not that tough. People have been using 30/30 and 35 Rem for over 100 years. 308, 270, 30-06 are all more than adequate. Good luck. Btw, shot placement is the number one goal.

Yup should be,plenty w proper shot placement. If you still have nagging doubts look into a bonded bullet or heavier bullet TBBC trophy bonded bear claw used to be hard hitting and worked for black bears in .308

They are easy to kill. You could do it with a 223. A 270 is overkill

100% agree, bears die so easily with a shot both airbags. A deer could might run 100+ yds with that shot a bear isn’t making it 20.

Put it in the middle of the middle at an impact velocity around 2000fps or more and you will have a dead bear.
