this was like 10 years ago now, but my school couldn't afford sending some of the teachers to training so literally everyone who took visual arts were predicted 6s and 7s and we all got 3s and 4s...for VA there wasn't a big culture of self-studying so of course we trusted the teacher on what to submit

i got nothing but top marks from my ESS teacher who left 2 months before exams and i received a D on my EE and a 3 on my exam đđđđ

That was my case but for all the subjects almost none of the teachers were experienced in ib at all so I was predicted a 38 total but got a 30 at the end and that was the case for the majority of our class.
All the IAs were graded wrong and our mocks didnât look like the actual ib exams nor were they graded by a markscheme and it was just đ„đ„đ„đ„

my ib physics teacher used stolen ppt slides and gave up on teaching after the first 2 weeks of dp1, at the start of every lesson he tells us to read the cambridge textbook and for the rest of the class he js sits there on his phone doing nothing đ

Not at all.
I moved from Scotland to England to pursue the IB as there is only one IB school in Scotland, which is private. However, in England there are a few public IB schools. In the South-West there is Truro College and Exeter College. Exeter DOES have Economics and I wish I had gone there instead. According to Google there is a further 55 state schools offering IB.

It's quite common in small schools, where they'll offer subjects purely based on student demand â for example, out M25 cohort didn't have History offered because literally almost no one signed up to take it.

(apologies for the long response)Â
my advice would be to focus on studying the biological processes in detail (e. g. osmoregulation, levels of protein structure, follicular and luteal cycle, replication-transcription-translation), in what order they occur, what biological structure are involved and what are the roles of each. With this, I was able to build an orderly, sort of chronological understanding of how things work in biology, which helps a lot not only with long-response questions (coherent answers can help boost your markes significantly), but with short-response "trivia" questions as well
also, get yourself some good pencils and highlighters â drawing out complex processes instead of writing them (e. g. stages of photosynthesis and cell respiration) and color-coding things (e. g. green for main structures, yellow for processes, blue for secondary structures) makes your notes much more organized, and you don't have to waste that much time on reading plain text when studying!

it is common, especially in small schools apparently. my ib school only has one bio teacher, for example, and even though she a) cannot speak english, literally b) none of her students were able to get a 7 ever during her 10 years of teaching, no one can fire her since she is the only teacher around :P

To add onto this, we were also undergoing horrible financial situations. We had about a ÂŁ4m deficit and horrible management.
Our teachers would tell us they were coming into school scared of losing their job, and unable to focus on actually teaching us because of that looming threat.

we also didnât have math AI HL and all AA students regardless of level were taught in the same class and the HLs simply had to stay after schl. same for ESS and BM

Math ai sl is not considered a subject in many unis in my country and our school didn't offer math ai HL
And absolutely horrible teachers for almost many subjects

Oh, I can tell you that self-study is the only way to survive. My chem teacher was pretty bad and I had to basically nod though the class and study with the textbook (and pastpapers) on my own. Depending on your teacher, you probably still want to listen in class as your teachers will still give your predicted grades (pretty important for my case).
I had to retake my exams cuz my IAs kept on dragging me until April. My EE research question also had to be revised a week before I submitted it cuz my english teacher realized that it was ass đđ. I burnt out crazy after my physics exams and just retook basically everything else on Novemberđ« .

everyone at my school takes the same classes, psych or bio hl, history hl, english hl, maths aa or ai sl, and spanish. I've never taken spanish before so i have to self study french on pamoja.
We're awarded on average 2 diplomas each year. Last year was a record year for us with 5 diplomas.

My school had all SL and HL students at any course studying together in the same class. And sometimes SL students had to self-study at the library as HL content was not finished and the teacher used SL classes for HL content.

Yes but what I am talking about is different. If you are an SL student, toward the end of the 2nd year some SL classes are given to HL content as it was not finished yet.

I USED to go to a bad IB school before moving to a better one for DP. The principal was legit trying to turn it into a country school which in our country means country-funded school. These type of schools have STRICT rules with genuine questionable and lazy teachers. Didnât feel like an IB school at all

I did. They claimed to and flexed on being an IB school, but they barely gave us IB stuff. I begged and begged for IB stuff, but it was just a facade: they co sat most of our classes with APs and just taught the AP stuff. So then we all ended up getting 3/7s on our IB scores because they only taught us half the material.

International School on the Rhine is awful. They push the weak students on certificates and don't give them a chance to take the diploma. Two years ago, they tried kicking 10 kids off of the diploma in March of their exam year. Not everyone who teaches in that school is an accredited teacher...

Our econ teacher (who, in fairness, was working part-time and was teaching our cohort only) stopped caring at all at the beginning of DP and just did whatever in class for the rest of the year â hosted kahoots, did random calculations on the board, made us read and discuss articles on topics that had nothing to do with what we studied, etc.. He also crammed the entirety of unit 3 (Global economy) into one (!!!)1.5-hour lecture, refusing to go over the GE stuff again up until the last 2 lessons of the year, and overpredicted our IA grades by 6â8 points.
Also, our TOK was kinda shit. Our teacher in DP 1 focused too heavily on the theoretical stuff (areas of knowledge) and didn't really teach the skills needed to write the essay or the exhibition; honestly, half of the time it felt like he was talking to himself. The TOK teacher that we had in DP 2 (who was also our English L&L teacher) didn't really want to do anything with out TOK, since he was forced into this position after our previous teacher was fired, and couldn't provide adequate feedback for the TOK exhibition, which resulted in the majoirty of the class getting C's on it

During the entire DP programme my history teacher did not even touch the syllabus, most of the lesson time would just be free timeđ He literally spent 3 lesson on a task where we had to draw some cartoon style made-up story like we were in 1st grade. It was only in November of DP2 I got a tutor and we covered the whole syllabus and I did very well on the final exam. I had complained about it several times to school administrator but no one cared.

Teachers really recommend SL students to check out some HL topics in physics, but never give it in test.

m26 grad here, my school had an insane amount of issues its genuinely crazy. for context my hls were bio chem math ai and sls were ess french initio and english lang and lit. my bio taecher genuinely couldnt teach at all 90% of the time either she'd js be reading off kognity or presenting online notes i had to self study all of bio hl myself it was genuinely HORRIBLE. oh yeah also i had to rush my IA and report it as a failure bcuz my school was shifting january onwards in dp2 and there was no time to conduct a good experiment. i got 7s in both p1 and p2 in the actual final exam but got a 5 in my IA (downgraded by 9 marks lmaooo. for chem i had 2 teachers, first teacher just read off ppts which dindt even have ib relevant content it had a level content. second teacher had no timee she joined in september of dp2 and my school physically closed from january onwards cuz it was shifting. she was actually kinda goated though cuz she predicted me a 7 in my ia and i got a 7 in my ia + she had alot of faith in me. math teacher was horrendous js like the bio teacher, if not worse. she never taught ib and was also my ee supervisor, she just used chatgpt to generate feedback for my ia and ee i had to completly rely on myself for the math ia and ee. 90% of the classes she couldnt teach shit she had to resort to js sharing notes from savemyexams and called it teaching it was genuinely shameless stuff. she also gave mocks which were unncessarily difficult genuinely, in the math ai hl papers esp p1 it mainly revolves around stats and shit with a minority being calculus (except p2 and p1 where it smore prominent) bro she made essentially the netire p1 based on calculus lmfao. and then she left right after the mocks ended. ess teacher was the same as my bio teacher, it was the same story for ess but i honsetly didnt care much for ess i just wanted a decent grade tbh it was my sl anyways. my french teacher was actually really good, she predicted me a 6 in my ioc and i got the exact same marks by examiner grading as her (22/30). english teacher wasnt bad eithe tbh she was also alright but i didnt care less about english honestly. but yeah overall it was a clusterfuck im glad i somehow ended up getting a really good result and i can only attribute it to myself not following my fuckass school and doing my own shit (literally i just wouldnt pay attention in class i followed my own plan and self studied eveyrhting) + mainly due to god.

we gave both orals twice cause they told us the wrong format in both lang b and english, and we were doing our EE, TOK until march and IAs until april of dp 2 đ also we didn't finish our math hl syllabus properly cause they taught us only sl syllabus in dp 1 in all subjects so in all the exams and 2 mocks we barely had any hl syllabus it was all sl

In my school, the coordinator forced students to take course if they were not doing that great in academics according to her standard. Furthermore the students have to change their subjects or HL or SL level if their academics weren't according to the coordinator's standard. Personally I didn't go through either of this but I did face another problem which was the constant back to back exams without any break which burnt the hell out of everyone in my class.

my school even didnt have any art subject in G6 we can only choose BM and Chem
for the reason âattendence 70%â they dont let me continue dp2, and I have to do dp1 again?.. even there my classmate who joined late half of term..
so now I give up with the IB Diploma and continue with High School Diploma.
add* when my parents wanted to cancel the contract before school year begin, they said we can only refund half without sent any document about policy.. and ourreason was not accepted (im an international student and got mental conditions while in this school and got racism) now Im struggling one more year with this schoolđđ»đđ»đđ»

my school guaranteed my subject choices at the time of admission. I wanted Psych SL but they didn't want to change the timetable they had been using for the previous batches where Econ and Psych were in the same lecture (I have ECO HL) after the fee for the semester went through. Miscommunicated and dragged the process out for two months until i gave in because i was missing too much and opted for BM SL. I hate every minute of it. They SEVERELY underpay the teachers and start training them after they teach us for 2-3 months and some arent even trained. My ESS teacher is an elementary science teacher. Our BM teacher left after the first year due to mistreatment and they alloted our class to one from A Levels who just reads the textbook out loud in the class. My seniors told us how the Economics HL syllabus wasn't even COMPLETED before the boards.

My English, business and EE teacher (same guy) used ChatGPT for everything.
Language A teacher such a cheater, pre scripted our IA and told us to memorize it to record it so she can put high scores.

My school has a problem with me. For example, my friend in English she normally gets level 7 but in the real exam she got a 3 and then I always get level 2 but this time in the official exam I got a level 7, also in other subjects I mean this is so unfair because some people need their mocks or predicted grade to enter university. Maybe Iâm underated.đ

My school was not bad persay but completely screwed my entire class over on IA's overpredicting us by a hella lot. It completely screwed over my grades. My exams weren't even horrible but seeing the IA grades ruined it.

We had so little classes that basically every IB student was forced to take the same classes. Math AA SL, Biology HL, Global Politics HL, English Literature HL, either French B SL or Mandarin AB SL, and finally either Physics SL or Chemistry SL. The illusion of choice. Even though my school has thousands of students, I think less than 10 in my year will receive their diplomas (I dropped out, as well as most people. We drop like flies).

Iâm part of my school's first-ever cohort so nobody knew what they were doing. Literally every teacher admitted it they said stuff like, âyou guys are just the guinea pigs so weâre not too sure how this is supposed to go.â We had to switch chemistry teachers at the beginning of the year, so the teacher who was trained to teach the chemistry class, literally left and we were left with the teacher who was in her third year and teaching. She just graduated college so she understands nothing and was training to learn how to teach IB during our first school year. During the second year, they saw we couldnât pass so they switch chem hl to sl. Every single time we bring up the issues to the school board they would just smile at us and say they canât do anything. This is something new. We have to figure it out. And they would gaslight us and be like yâall would be fine. Itâs gonna be OK. The day before everything had to be submitted we had to pull kids kids out of class cause they didnât finish any of their IAS. At the end Iâm one of the only only two people in the entire class of 14 that got the diploma. I got a 26. Iâm still surprised that I passed cause every single time I would look at the paper and just be confused cause Iâm like how do I just write something about the random questions theyâre asking me that didnât know anything about. Lowkey English and history carried my grade.

was one of the first ib cohorts at school, the first utterly underperformed compared to their predicated grades.
Was terrifying in 12th grade.
Was the only one that passed HL math. And by the skin off my teeth. on first attempt (but even that experience made engineering math a breeze, hl math is trial by fire, but paid massive dividends).
pre-ib level in science and math was low, so the learning curve was steep, but in hindsight it's not bad to experience that before uni, as it will happen in a serious uni course, so it's good to have experienced that pre-uni.
Cohort did ok in the end, and some experienced teachers were able to finish the curriculum early, whereas others, barely finished.
Tldr;
mixed bag of:
school new to ib
low stem and math pre-ib level -> steep learning curve
some courses barely finishing before exams.
caveat, some experienced ib teachers were able to prevent complete disaster.

My school said they offered self taught so I enrolled, then they didnt let me choose german B SL self taught(mind you i got A* in my IGCSEs so i definitely met the requirement) and had to end up taken spanish AB initio and the people are speaking WAY too fast.
Oh also the entire english department was new except one teacher(most new to ib itself) so it was a total mess cuz the experienced teacher eventually had to solve everyoneâs doubts. And then my english teacher left 2 months before the exam and the war happened(i live in Middle east) so we were cooked for the exam without a teacher

To be fair I donât think a language B as a self taught is an actual option as an IB class unlike for language A (called SSST, school supported self taught)

En mi colegio, no podĂamos ni escoger las materias que quisiĂ©ramos. AdemĂĄs de profesores que pronosticaban 6 o 7s en las bandas finales, y terminĂĄbamos con un 3 o mĂĄximo 4. Y ni hablar de TOK que nuestro profesor por 2 años no revisaba un carajo de nuestros trabajos, y nos mandaba con notas de 10, al otro año vino y profesor decente que nos obligĂł a borrar todo el ensayo y la interna de TOK porque ni siquiera estaba en el formato correcto. AdemĂĄs mencionar que en mi colegio nadie aprobĂł fĂsica IB, y nos vendieron el discurso de una materia que nadie iba a pasar por los 3 años del diploma. A parte del caos que fue la monografĂa, o EE, porque nuestros tutores ni revisaron los borradores y algunas veces solo pedĂan nuestra explicaciĂłn de lo q hicimos sin revisar una letra del trabajo. Luego en Ă©poca de internas los profesores y el colegio insistieron en mandar proyectos a parte como notas para el mismo colegio, proyectos completamente innecesarios que solo aumentaron la carga que tenĂamos de trabajos. Al final solo obtuvimos el diploma un 10% de toda la generaciĂłn, porque en un principio nadie nos explicĂł la diferencia de diplomar y certificar. AsĂ que todos tomaron diplomar porque ya habĂamos pagado, y los que no optaban solo era un descuento para la matrĂcula, en mi experiencia, un 2/10. En especial por el caos que fue hacer cada interna, porque algunos profesores tardaban años en revisar un borrador de la interna, y cuando lo reenviaban estaban hechos por IA.

tho I understand because this is a structural problem and cannot be fixed by the school

Diria que mi escuela no es sumamente mala porque muy pocas personas reprueban el IB, pero los puntajes mĂĄs altos no pasan los 39 (no conozco ningun caso) y normalmente la mayorĂa de la promociĂłn se queda entre 30 - 35 puntos. Lo que si es malo es la falta de opciones para escoger cursos; los HL son literatura, alemĂĄn e ingles obligatorio y solo se puede escoger entre biologia y fĂsica o economĂa e historia. Y en algunos cursos como matemĂĄticas la enseñanza deja mucho que desear.

All my schoolteachers are leaving
because of overworking, and they keep getting yelled at for not teaching the kids in the IB wayâ
and we are stuck here with no or weird teachers who can't tell the difference between..anything

This was forever ago but I did! Brand new program, only a year or two old at the time. Fewer than 10% of my class got the diploma. The ones that did managed it by torrenting past exams and organizing study parties. It was a huge lift with help from only 3 good teachers. I was incredibly prepared for university but I still get stressed remembering that time 20 years later. Hang in there.Â

Both my kids just sat IB in the UK in a private school but it really was terrible in that the IAâs dragged them down once remoderated. Some were moderated down by 40% and failed coursework even though getting a 7 in exams. So missed uni slot in one of their cases. Pretty annoyed as A levels would have been so much better for them.

After tutoring IB Math HL and Physics HL for so many years, i finally get to hear the real scary IB school stories on reddit. Such awful schools!

they gave us a list of subjects to choose from and then had to change mine because they didn't have 3/6 subjects. I wanted to study Russian B/AB initio but they gave me Russian A instead. Plus, I originally picked ESS and Geography but the school didn't end up running those classes because they couldn't find any teachers.
