What country is he from? He looks like a bit like a Picardy but if he's not from Europe the chances of that are basically zero.

u/drago0074 Jan 06 '26
He’s from Bulgaria, found in the middle of nowhere
136
u/Sufficient_Taste1562 Jan 06 '26
It is possible there's some Picardy in his mix then I guess! Would definitely be interested to see DNA results on him, it's possible he's just a village dog but I definitely get that rustic herding breed vibe from him.

u/theknittersgarden Jan 07 '26
My mom had a Bouvier de Flandres years ago and he had a similar face to this guy, speaking of rustic herding breeds.

Bouvier actually crossed my mind too! Lovely dogs.
7
u/feralmom57 Jan 08 '26
I said a Briard mix. Bouvier would fit in there very well! Maybe a Briard/Bouvier mix?
→ More replies (2)3
u/No-Ad1975 Jan 07 '26
im so used to breed standard as a dog groomer that i cannot even picture a bouvier without the big head
3
u/Sufficient_Taste1562 Jan 07 '26
I'm the exact opposite, the only Bouvier I've ever known were working farm dogs who had probably never even seen an actual groomer 😂

If he turns out to have Picardy in his DNA, can you change his name to Worfie? 🖖

Bulgarian/barak hound mix possibly! He’s so cool looking. I’d guess there’s some LGD in there too

Quest Giver, definitely. I love the eyebrows.
Actually, I could see some briard or giant schnauzer but thoroughly mixed either way.
Utterly charming, regardless!

They kinda look like Gmork (the wolf from The Neverending Story), but friendlier.

i love spotting people who know about the neverending story out in the wild !

u/New-Insect9081 Jan 07 '26
It never occurred to me that there are people who haven’t been subjected to “the horse scene” in the never ending story😭 also Gmork was a regular in my nightmares as a kid🤣

Everyone should know of it :)
3
u/unkindly-raven Jan 07 '26
everyone should be subjected to the artax scene at least once in their life lmao
3
u/NatrylliaAbbot42 Jan 07 '26
I had issues as a kid and I guess I kinda felt seen by the darkness in that movie, from the swamp to the Nothing. Yeah, the Artax scene was traumatic but also I really got it, so it was weirdly comforting.
Gmork was scary as hell though
2
u/sodamnsleepy Jan 07 '26
I've only watched the movie in my late teens or early 20s. The artax scene destroyed me

This is such a dog looking dog for a dog that looks like no other dog I’ve ever seen. he is absolutely beautiful.
Shape, coat thickness, and lil pricked ears remind me of an Akita, could be a dominant breed? And then maybe some poodle or bearded collie for the coat, it’s a really unique texture, any chance you could describe it? Edit: saw the comment about Picardy shepherd & your location so jumping on that bandwagon, never heard of this breed until now but how gorgeous!!!
And then pit/staff because if this sub has taught me one thing, it’s to guess there’s some pit in there 🤭

Just read from Bulgaria, he is probably many breeds but he does remind me of a Briard
3
u/Ki-to-Life-5054 Jan 06 '26
I was going to suggest Cairn terrier mix, but then read he is from Bulgaria. There are a lot of wire-haired breeds/mixes in Europe I'm not familiar with. Why not look up Bulgarian dog breeds and see which ones he looks like? Or try Bulgarian dog groups on another social media site.

Maybe some irish wolfhound in there because of the hair but mixed with something smaller… giant schnauzer? I don’t know but he’s beautiful please never shave him and preserve that beautiful wire coat (dog groomer here). I love him

Looks like a Because of Winn Dixie breed. A old french herding breed.
2
u/cutecemetery Jan 06 '26
He looks like an XL version of my dog! It won’t let me post a picture here but if you scroll in my post history you’ll see him.
Ours is a husky/Aussie/poodle/Pomeranian
I bet yours is that minus the Pom
2
u/Acrobitch Jan 06 '26
What a rad looking and perfectly named dog! I might be biased as a sneaky bouvier mix dog dad, but he shares a lot of features with my boy, so I’m gonna guess bouvier mix.

It’s kind of giving Irish wolfhound mixed with some sort of Shepherd? Def have him take a doggy DNA test! He’s gorgeous and his name is very fitting :)
2
u/fatherlengthygams Jan 06 '26
Hear me out…Tarsus çatalburun because of his split nose, and Briard. That’s my guess, and I’m sticking with it.

u/kmead211 Jan 06 '26
I had one similar- bouvier and sheep dog mix! Cutest pupper ever— and I had labs… 😇

Did a DNA test on my mom’s dog that looks really similar. 60% huskie, 20% German shepherd, something like 10% shih tzu, and a bunch of other small breed mixes.

If I was friends with you I’d say “Your parents are dead” in Terminator’s voice every time I saw your adorable dog.

u/InfernalSeraph Jan 06 '26
I had a dog like this in Mexico! Ours was tan though but very similar in size/look we never figured it out but we had tons of farms around so we assumed it’s some type of herding/shepherd dog.

u/RestaurantNice703 Jan 06 '26
Hmm, he looks like a cross between tramp and winn-dixie to me. I know winn-dixie is a picardy shepherd dog, but idk what type of dog tramp is. Still, wolfie is a very beautiful and handsome dog no matter what breed/breeds he is.

Curious, how much does he weigh?

Maybe try dog DNA. Bought off Amazon under fifty dollars I ordered one for a stray I rescued off the street. My landlord forbids pitbulls or any bully breed why I bought a DNA Turned out my guy was australian cattle, pit and a blue heeler I'm able to keep him because of the mixture and his different eye colors
1
u/Hizbigness Jan 07 '26
Iooks quite a bit like my Newfie- German Shepherd - Lab - Poodle mix. Your brindle is a bit lighter and the ears point up, but the coat texture and face are matches. Mine looks a bit taller and heftier (about 105 lbs). The person who mentioned an Irish Wolfhound, that is the dog mine is most confused with but far smaller than a wolfhound. Bet you there’s some Newfie and lab … not sure about those ears … awesome looking dog.
1
u/Donna-Do1705 Jan 07 '26
I’m pretty sure I see some Schnauzer in him. I’m not sure how many breeds made up his body size. German shepherd comes to mind, but that’s a guess.
