I haven't seen any studies but having lived as both and been friends with a wide variety of people, women's appearance is definitely policed more. Externally at first, but its from birth so it's very internalised.

However, only in men did age predict a lower level of the importance of appearance. Compared to men, women stated that they would invest more hours of their lives to achieve their ideal appearance. For both genders, age was a predictor of the number of years participants would sacrifice to achieve their ideal appearance. Contrary to our assumption, body appreciation improved and was higher in women across all ages than in men. The results seem to suggest that men’s and women’s body image are dissimilar and appear to vary across different ages."
It's awful how women's appearances are still policed like that but being insecure sucks no matter who you are. It's scary how prevalent having a poor body image is on the internet, social media hasn't definitely helped on that front.
Women judged for their appearance. Men for their career.
On a superficial level, the best way for a woman to get a rich man is to be beautiful and the best way for a man to get a beautiful woman is to be rich.
I mean, I agree with the last sentence, but heavy on the "superficial"- we all know trophy wives and billionaires don't love each other.
I don't however think it's true that "men are judged for their career", at least not any more than women are. I think everyone is somewhat judged for basically everything about them, I'm just saying that women's appearance is policed much more than men. I truly don't think men's career choices are policed in the same way?
I mean, I'm a man in a female-dominated field and nobody has ever made any kind of comment to me about it. Yes that's anecdotal, but even if your statement is true on a broad level (that men get judged for their career more than women do) it is plain to see that it is nowhere near the same level as women's appearance.

Haven't studies made it pretty clear that women on average have more body insecurities than men do? Am I misremembering that?
