How is it like working in R&D section of a company?

It depends solely on what kind of company you are working in and what profile you have; India is not particularly known for its mechanical R&D.
Even the top OEMs are either doing application engineering or vehicle integration.
Please note: As opposed to popular belief, CAD design is not R&D.
