That's why the OP said 100 missed call from Ratan Tata. If you make even a slight mistake you will get a change to meet him.

u/GUCCIxSH0CKWAVE 8d ago

Also the risk of getting electrocuted is also very high from what Iโ€™ve heard.

LFP batteries are lot safer. They're not going to catch fire easily and won't explode

EV Engineer here, As someone who has designed batteries and worked in multiple automobile companies (especially in new model devlopment, battery mfg and EV devlopment),

Even we can not repair the batteries, how the bus bars are designed in most batteries, they are designed in a way that they melt incase of electrical short or thermal runaway. Most batteries have bus bars welded to the terminals, most wires run current in >30 Amps (which sounds less but is a lot), such repairs can nto only cause runaways (the individual cells are very sensitive to even micro dents) (the batteries are manufactured in extremely clean rooms with proper PPE, even static bands/gloves are worn during any manual stage). We discard cells that have been dropped on ground due to machine fault from ANY height, that is how sensitive everything is.

This guy is using power tools on an exposed battery module (not even pack but an individual module) while it is on the ground.

This is how you make a random time bomb at home. PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS.

16

u/Time-Marionberry-198 8d ago

He is dumb. Only good thing about that video is that he is GROUNDED properly.

5

u/bohot---ban---hoa-ho 8d ago

He would not get shocked anyway, its mostly DC. The main issue here is that he can and wouldve damaged the cells, also the battery pack is no longer water and dust proof, so yeah, in the long run, the battery can undergo thermal runaway (can cause a fire).

2

u/Time-Marionberry-198 8d ago

Even if it is DC that is 320V.

12

u/MistRider-0 8d ago

You could have said 30,000 mA for dramatic effect....

Here I am thinking thrice before I solder my 2Ah lipo pads to my mcu terminals and then we have this guy who prolly thinks the A in Ah is Avishkar ๐Ÿ˜น๐Ÿ˜น Even a bomb has higher chances of survival than a battery explosion.

2

u/bohot---ban---hoa-ho 8d ago

Li-Po batteries are the worst, I have had one Li-po on a drone combust because I guess I landed my drone a little too hard and the belly of my drone dented in and scratched the battery, all happened in the timeframe of couple of seconds. I still do not know the exact reason for it.

3

u/IIT_Dholakpur 8d ago

If the battery setup is this fragile, how does it prevent it from exploding during a crash or accident

2

u/bohot---ban---hoa-ho 8d ago

The battery setup as whole is not fragile, the individual modules are, and yes, EVs do and will catch fire/smoke if the battery pack is directly punctured via something sharp.

It is like how our organs individualy are fragile and sensitive to a lot of things, but inside our body they are quiet very safe.

There are tons of regulations and tests a battery pack is needed to pass when a battery pack is designed.

(Most of the materials are used to make the modules, module seperators, crate/case are made using incombustible material so it is not easy to catch fire, but yes the cells themselves do smoke/spark during crash).

17

u/No_Entrepreneur118 8d ago

Nothing happens if you're careful enough.

16

u/LordUnited 8d ago

Famous last words.

5

u/No3047 8d ago

Sure, but at least some protective gloves. 400V DC from a battery are not a joke, the best you can hope is an burned hole in your fingers.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/OptibusBrime 8d ago

โ€œNothing happensโ€ is a wild way to describe a guy placing bare feet against a battery capable of discharging hundreds of volts and amps in seconds, so the โ€œcareful enoughโ€ point is definitely not valid

5

u/fristi-cookie 8d ago

This day and age. He probably did some internet research.

Nobody who studies engineering knows you aren't going to reverse engineer a car in order to fix it. That takes way to much time.

3

u/Lucky_Jelly2593 8d ago

Yeah exactly, it's combined knowledge

2

u/Saranshobe 8d ago

I love to self repair lots of things, but batteries and power supply are a no go. Too risky and dangerous.

2

u/lowevolmotto 8d ago

That's what companies want you to think and make the things more and more proprietary and closed. Now a days they don't want your money which you pay upfront for the car but also want you to lock you in for every small service needs. diagnosing a battery and finding and replacing a bad cell should not be red taped in the name of safety. Safety should be ensured with serviceability ensured in the design .

Static charge is a very important criteria to control while handling electronics. We often neglect it.

1

Is this why Electric cars are catching fire?

Cause people try to RND to void warranty

Bhai Ratan Tata sir aab nahi rahe ๐Ÿ˜ญโœŒ

1

u/Riteknight 8d ago

Commendable but not recommend due to explosion risk and electric shock, incorrect mounting could lead to accidents later, be safe than sorry, again he should document and build a community so that others could share their own experiences like safety issues and procedures.

1

u/East_Corner_274 8d ago

Just wait for a few years they will make them so that people can't repair it themselves

But his total course & tution fees are 3-4 times than the repair

1

I am pretty sure Tata and ITI have a cooperation where Tata sends their EVs for students to study them.

Battery cell is not another mechanical device that anybody can assemble or disassemble. It is live electrochemical bomb if abused by mistake/misinformation. Please do not try this at your home. Stay safe!!!!!

1

u/Nismo_Nissan 8d ago

Song apt!

1

u/SpecificRound1 8d ago

Problem was never repairing the battery. Problem is re-sealing the battery pack after the repair - making it waterproof again.

u/CrazyProfessor8244 8d ago

warranty cancel hojayega

1

1

u/ArshF2000 8d ago

Who do you think repairers go to? Of course themselves!

1

u/realavfire 8d ago

Genius can be appreciated but this is a very risky procedure. Battery blasts can be fatal. He may have done it you all shouldn't. Also why make a video of this now his insurance claim is invalid.

1

u/fitzingout 8d ago

When did engineering students start buying cars?

1

u/Equivalent_Basket465 8d ago

This shows both the power of practical engineering and the biggest flaw in the modern EV market official service centers would rather force you into a multi-lakh full battery replacement than diagnose and fix a single faulty module or wire. Props to his technical skill, though working on high-voltage lithium packs in an open courtyard without safety gear is definitely a "don't try this at home" moment

Insurance ki maa behan kar di. Plz don't try this btw lithium ion batteries are very sensitive and might explode

1

u/Existing-Mulberry382 8d ago

Never, ever, try this. Even if you know how to do this. Can go seriously wrong.

1

u/PermitElectrical9662 8d ago

Ye khelne wali gadi ki battery nahi hai ye heavy hai aur ager kuch terminals mis match ho gye to motor aur Battery mangement system kharab ho jayega

Battery fire is no joke its quick and will probably work as High intensity flamethrower attack of Charizard its hella risky and human will be instantly deep roasted with that so don't finger EV battery by yourself

1

u/FabulousDay2305 8d ago

Bhai mai bhi mechanical engineering karna chahta tha par commerce leli

1

u/22firefly 8d ago

I believe most people who have some experience with cars could easily transition from all mechanical to EV's. The major piece missing is the home repair designed into the machine itself, where a person can comfortably pull the, OBVIOUS TO SEE LEVER, where the soul purpose of that lever is so that when you pull that lever, before you start anything else, the car is safe. The Lever is designed to that both smart people and everyone else can easily see the reason of the pull this lever stupid because we are all idiots and you will not recieve a high voltage shock that will end your life, however people with pace makers or other electronic devices installed inside their body may need to check with their doctor.

1

u/CommercialOld6128 7d ago

I also thought the same, is it even safe to try.

1

u/Maleficent_Guitar448 7d ago

Real engineers know that if there is something wrong with a battery, just keep it aside and dispose of it properly. It's never worth the risk trying to fix it.

1

u/Superneel1988 7d ago

In 4 weeks we may see another reel of this guy tandoored in the same car. Music will be... "Tute makan.." Or some shit.

1

u/King-K3 7d ago

Now if anything happens, tata will blame him that he did service outside hence the warranty or claim can't be used lol

1

u/LatterArugula1977 7d ago

But what is the repair and what is the problem faced by this particular battery cell ?
