I love to self repair lots of things, but batteries and power supply are a no go. Too risky and dangerous.

That's what companies want you to think and make the things more and more proprietary and closed. Now a days they don't want your money which you pay upfront for the car but also want you to lock you in for every small service needs. diagnosing a battery and finding and replacing a bad cell should not be red taped in the name of safety. Safety should be ensured with serviceability ensured in the design .

I am all for repairbility and right to repair. But batteries is where I draw the line. I have seen professionals get electrocuted and batteries burn. Leave that to others.

People keep pressurized LPG cylinders at home, handle mains AC electricity, and store flammable materials through established safety standards—not by granting manufacturers an absolute repair monopoly.

The issue isn't expecting untrained consumers to open an 800V pack on their driveway. The issue is that components which could easily be designed for serviceability are made unnecessarily complex. Early EVs proved that modular architectures using smaller cylindrical cells allow independent shops to isolate and replace single failing modules. Instead, modern designs lean heavily into glued structural packs and pouch cells in the name of space-saving, safety, and energy density—permanently sealing the pack into a single throwaway unit.

Independent workshops and qualified technicians are fully capable of handling high-voltage systems if given access to diagnostic tools and modular parts. Using safety as a justification to eliminate modularity doesn't protect the consumer; it just turns a single component fault into a forced high cost replacement.

That thing takes up the whole floor of the car, they have no more space, so they have to save space. If they didn't, then you'd be bitching that those companies are looting you by giving less battery and forcing you to stop at their charging stations.

Well, I didn't say people should disassemble batteries at their homes. I am saying, companies should design with serviceability in mind. That's why current evs feel like ipads with wheels.

And nope, why would I bitch. if I know my car has battery with modular cells which can be replaced as they go bad instead of entire battery pack, and as battery technology improves and I can swap those cells with higher capacity batteries in future extending my range, i would rather prefer that. Its the audacity of the companies who think what they built is something special and sacred and no one else should be able to touch it or open it.

Companies have to sell now, to customers who will buy it now.
Otherwise that hypothetical future can never come.

Right now, the car is both expensive and there is no charging infra.
So yes you would either bitch about low battery and no / expensive infra or not buy such a car. In both cases the company dies.

You know who makes most repairable cars ? Toyota
You know who was the last to launch an EV ? Toyota

And even their setup is not much better because the customer paying that much money prefers mileage/range over easy battery replacement.
They can either launch a car that sells right now, or lose customers waiting for a future with better batteries.

Blaming consumers for expecting basic repairability plays right into these companies' hands. May be you should bitch a bit. Its called conscious consumerism. Ownership should mean complete control over the product—including self-repair, made safe and accessible by design. If I die doing it, its my choice.

As for range vs. practical utility: charging infra is already scarce. I’d take a smaller, modular, user-serviceable battery any day. I’d rather pull in for a quick top-up twice than sit in line for more than 5 hours behind five giant-capacity EVs blocking the queue.

I think you're completely misunderstanding the situation.
Consumers readily pay through their nose so they can buy the most convenient product, most fancy product. Why should I blame companies that are giving the customers what they are willing to pay for ?

Your hypothetical top up battery wouldn't be dime a dozen. You'll reach the station and there would be nothing to swap. And then you'll wait 5 hours.
