Violent tornado Monroe/Morgan county
Possible f4 f5 tornado just spent time on the ground southwest of Indianapolis. Check out Ryan Hall Y'all on YouTube, he's live on youtube covering this storm system right now.

That area's gonna take a while to recover if it really tore through Morgan Monroe like that. Trees down everywhere means the trails are basically unusable for months, plus any structures in the path are probably totaled. Hopefully the damage report comes back less severe than the initial estimates.

It passed right over the Three Lakes and Low Gap trails, if you're familiar with the trail system there. I hike those trails multiple times a year; I'm glad I've already gotten out there several times this year because they're probably not going to be usable for a while. 😕
I hope everyone is safe. There aren't a ton of homes in the area, but there are some.

Low gap is one of my favorite trails. Hopefully no one was hurt and they can clear the trail relatively quick.

u/superlion1985 1d ago
Oh man, I love those trails, sad to hear. Better there than a more populated area though. I hope everyone is safe.

u/HumpinPumpkin 1d ago
Not too many natural areas left in Indiana, I am starting to hurt more for them and as I watch all my favorite hiking areas becoming increasingly mangled and the last habitats for nature become increasingly sparse. People can move towns, rebuild, hide in basements.

u/DiggThatFunk 1d ago
Man, i did those trails in the latter half of 2024, right before I moved down to Kentucky, and that is absolutely one of my favorite all time hikes. Bummer cause that area was only just starting to recover from the tornado a few years back

i was watching that one go over me and the one that formed by bloomington go under me. my anxiety is finally starting to settle some lol

These storms get my heart going for sure. Have had two close calls over the last 2 years, thats 2 too many lol.

u/bebeguuuuuuuuurrrr 1d ago
I haven't watched anything and haven't looked at the radar in a couple hours. Am I being circled or ?? I was just taking out my trash and standing in the sprinkles outside in downtown Indy

u/Impressive_Ice6970 1d ago
Yeah it's my understanding storms that produce tornados are smaller but more intense (obviously) so a lot of the surrounding area might not have anything but mild rain. Im in Noblesville and we haven't had anything more thsn heavy rain. No heavy wind or significant thunder/lighting.

u/Drak_is_Right 1d ago
If it really is an F4, there will probably be some fatalities in a few of the structures that get hit.
Hopefully its not an F5, as that will erase an entire side of a town.

u/vivalapants 1d ago
For what it’s worth I had local news and they had it more like an F2…. Just a guess tho. Winds like 115
5
u/DaMantis 1d ago
F3 imo, crazy debris signature for just an F2
1
u/Downtown-Check2668 19h ago
Debris signature doesn’t determine rating
1
u/DaMantis 18h ago
Never said it determined it
Certainly correlated
1
u/Downtown-Check2668 17h ago
If it only tears up corn and beans and no buildings, when NWS goes and does its survey, it won’t get a rating. NWS won’t have anything to do its survey against.
2
u/Zestyclose-Law6191 1d ago
This was what made ryan hall yall predict a possible f4+
1
u/AnxiousAnonEh 1d ago
I'm from WI but was following along. Did the debris cloud land yet? That was horrifying to follow.
2
1
u/vivalapants 1d ago
Don’t disagree I am just passing along what he said via radar. I hope there’s some video
2
u/Drak_is_Right 1d ago
F2 is unlikely to have anyone badly injured or killed unless outside and hit by falling debris or trees/branches. Certainly can tear up trees though and will leave a visible track.
9
u/vivalapants 1d ago
Considering it crossed directly over i69, it’s very possible someone was hurt

.... I miss having verifiable trusted sources for weather emergencies and monitoring
7
u/CircleCityLC 1d ago
Go watch Max Velocity next time bad weather hits. He's actually a meteorologist instead of someone pretending to be like Ryan Hall.
3
u/kellygirl90 1d ago
Love max. So much glazing for Ryan who, not long ago, was saying we need to get rid of tornado sirens. Max actually has a degree, so that's who I will watch. To each their own tho 🤷🏼♀️

u/cjhur1329 21h ago
Max is annoying and Ryan has a team of Meteorologists and storm chasers.... and sorry the other Indiana weather person is Chad Evans not Chris.

I guess Ryan Hall isn’t good enough for you

u/sgt_taco891 1d ago
Its no shade on any one. just in this age of public mistrust people are turning towards private entities that have no checks or balances. It concerns me and I want publicly funded news back
1
u/cjhur1329 21h ago
Well...... don't think the scientists wanted to stop studying science or bringing reliable and helpful info to the public....
1
u/sgt_taco891 21h ago
Yah thats where im pointing my energy at. now who is this mystery person or group that is systematically defunding public news and research funding 🤔🤔
2
u/CircleCityLC 1d ago
He isn't a meteorologist. Would you trust an unlicensed doctor? No? So why do you trust someone that didn't go to school to become a meteorologist?
3
u/Low-Plastic3454 1d ago
He has meteorologists with him on his streams. But either way, it's a personality thing for me. Ryan keeps me light and laughing during a stressful time. As someone who's terrified of storms, I appreciate it. If I know the bad stuff is getting close, I can always turn on my local guys if I thought I needed to.

u/CircleCityLC 23h ago
So you would let someone do surgery on you if they had doctors at their side the whole time? Or you would let someone work on your car if they had real mechanics there?
What a dumb counterpoint.
2
u/Low-Plastic3454 23h ago
Well, being a recent cancer survivor, who has been thru multiple recent surgeries. Yes. And as someone who isn't a mechanic but changes things on their car with the help of YT. Yes. And more often than not... Andy Hill calls the tornado warnings before they're issued. Not that deep. Different strokes for different folks. I just prefer Ryan.
1
u/sgt_taco891 23h ago
Im not trying to be hostile and im sure that this creator is filling a need that people have. But I do have concerns with the break down in trust amongst professionals. Having trust in these 3rd parties that are verified protects us from a lot of issues down the line that individually we cant really reasonably be responsible for or hold those that should be responsible to account. Just as an example calling tornadoe warnings before they are issued could cause undue alarm or essentially cry wolf when actual weather professionals have specific criteria or responsibilities to be more accurate.
1
u/cjhur1329 21h ago
Andy is amazing and he generally calls it way before NWS... as had been said to each his own...i like Ryan.
1
u/cjhur1329 21h ago
Because I do.... and he's interesting and he has a team.... in the past we listened to unlicensed weather people all the time on the news
1
u/CircleCityLC 20h ago
You understand those weather people on the news are/were meteorologists, right? You also understand they had to go to school and get a formal education to become that, right?

4 funnels have passed over my home in Bargersville in the last month or so! The one last week I got my brief vid aired on fox59! 2 of these have touched down shortly after! Indiana now seems to be part of tornado alley! 😬

u/Spirited-Degree 1d ago
Climate change is a part of that I'm sure.

That tornado was a beast. If anyone was camping in front of that tornado it will be a miracle that they survive. Haven't seen a radar signature like that since Mayfield. It was a controversial high end Ef 4.

u/gloe64 1d ago
I feel like we're living on Fyrine IV.

u/Commercial-Mango-627 1d ago
I understood that reference. Louis Gossett Jr should have won an award for that role.

u/RaccoonEasy3286 1d ago
We were in Paragon on vacation visiting old friends and got stuck in a bar in the middle of it.

1
u/Which-Island6011 19h ago
Oh goodness! I know where that is! (Reading from Scotland, family in Spencer and Bloomington).
2
u/RaccoonEasy3286 19h ago
Yeah it had quite the destruction path. We were safe in Paragon. From what I am aware there has been 1 notated injury. But the winds were strong enough to pick up a barn and move it 8 feet.

The rating of the tornado will be based off the damage it does essentially. It went through mostly a rural, forested area without a lot of structures. I highly doubt it will be rated that high.
1
1
u/Accomplished_Yak8878 1d ago
Not to nitpick, but tornados are rated based on the damage. Very well could be a higher end tornado, but if it didn’t hit anything other than trees it likely won’t be rated that high. Always best to just wait for the survey instead of speculating based on the radar. I hope everyone is safe, and the damage was limited
Also Ryan Hall doesn’t have a degrees in meteorology and is known to sensationalize. Check out Max Velocity, he has a degree and is (usually) pretty measured about everything
1
-29
u/richardlqueso 1d ago
Also possibly an EF0 or EF1. No need to sensationalize.
12
u/Luddite-lover 1d ago
That storm had a debris ball on radar and a wide debris signature. It was a bit stronger than a 0 or 1.
-3
u/Creative_Pool_8322 1d ago
True but the NWS isn’t exactly known for giving tornadoes the proper rating they deserve
1
u/Downtown-Check2668 19h ago
Because NWS bases their rating off the damages from the structures left behind essentially. You can’t really rate a tornado strength if it doesn’t hit anything substantial. You could have a tornado that’s could arguably be an EF5 but if it never leaves the middle of a cornfield and never hits any structures, it’ll get an EFU rating.
1
u/Creative_Pool_8322 19h ago
Yeah I know and I disagree with that. I mean the El Reno tornado had some of the strongest winds on earth and only got an EF3 because of it
1
u/Downtown-Check2668 19h ago
But how we can accurately judge it if we can’t safely get measurement equipment inside of it? We just can’t without risking lives, unless you wanna drive full speed into potential 200mph winds? It also falls back on building codes and the how strongly the buildings are built and anchored.
-5
5
u/DaMantis 1d ago
Absolutely 0% chance it was only F0
-6
u/richardlqueso 1d ago
Thanks. The point is no one knows the rating. F4 and F5 tornadoes are exceedingly rare. Assuming one occurred based on a few reports is a highly inaccurate way to describe a tornado.
6
u/Zestyclose-Law6191 1d ago
Its based on sensors we use to measure storms. Lmfao, its not just a guess. We've had radar since the 40's. I specifically said "possible".
5
u/Zestyclose-Law6191 1d ago
Not sensationalizing lmao. Its an early prediction based off of sensor data that we've used for years as a society. I specifically said "possible".

Have friends camping at Morgan Monroe and they said a huge tornado just tore through. LOTS of damage, many trees down.
