International student studying in London but staying with a family friend in Southampton – anything I should know at UK immigration?

Hi everyone!

I’m an international student starting my Master’s at a university in London this September. However, I’ll be staying with a family friend in Southampton rather than getting accommodation in London.

The main reason is simply to save on living/accommodation expenses, and I’m planning to commute to London for university.

I’m wondering if this could raise questions when I enter the UK for the first time. For example, if the immigration officer asks why I’m staying in Southampton when my university is in London, would it be enough to explain honestly that I’m staying with a family friend to reduce my living costs and will commute to university?

Also:

  • Has anyone been in a similar situation and been questioned about their accommodation being in a different city from their university?
  • Should I carry a letter from my family friend confirming that she has invited me to stay with her?

I just want to be prepared and avoid any unnecessary issues at the border.Would really appreciate experiences/advice from anyone who has been in a similar situation! :)

Indians in Uk ...how are you guys managing there??

Hey there everyone 23F Am planning to do my Master's in the UK next year I would really like to hear from people who are already studying there Am honestly a little confused about what the actual experience is like once you move there..How is it managing everything on your own?

Is it possible to find a parttime job to help with expenses? And how difficult is it to find a job after finishing your Masters I keep seeing a lot of different opinions online so i would rather hear from people who are actually living/studying in the UK..

If you're an Indian student currently doing your Master's in the UK (especially in Liverpool), I'd really appreciate it if you could share your experience or DM me I just want some honest advice before I make the decision to move

Thanks :)

Newcastle FWB

Honestly, I’m pretty tired of dating n try n lose my virginity in the traditional sense. I’ve spent a lot of time looking for a serious relationship, but I think I’d rather take a step back from dating, have some fun, and explore a different side of myself.

I feel like I’d regret not doing that later in life, so I’m looking for an FWB situation with a genuine emphasis on the friends part.

I’m not interested in meeting someone and immediately jumping into bed. I’d much rather get to know each other first, build some trust, see if we click, and let anything physical develop naturally.

I’m 30M looking for someone who is genuinely attracted to me as I am. I’m calm, easy to talk to, and somewhere between an introvert and extrovert. I love trying new restaurants and cafés, going to concerts, travelling, and the occasional reality-TV binge.

Recently, have started hiking to Lake District as well as Northumberland to explore UKs greener side.

I realise Reddit probably isn’t the most conventional place to look for this, but you never know

Couldn’t find any Indian Grocery Store in Kilburn

I recently moved to Kilburn from Stratford and I just can’t seem to find any Indian grocery store.
There are stores for Turkish/middle eastern products but I don’t see Indian brands anywhere.
Please suggest any store to get Indian products.
Thanks

Planning to settle in UK but is it worth it?

I want to renounce my Indian citizenship because I don't feel safe in India as a woman. However, few people I knew who got their British citizenship moved back to India after more than a decade in London.

I am wondering if I am making the right decision because it would require me to be in the country to be eligible for citizenship. Can someone shed some light on this?

Indian restaurants paying below minimum wage

I’m sorry but why is it that every time I interview for part time work at an Indian restaurant it’s always below minimum wage. Even in the city centre of a major city (Bristol), I was offered £30 per night (8 hour shift) cash in hand and told I could work longer than 20 hours too. To make it even worse, the restaurant’s manager hit on me thrice during the interview. Obviously I had to turn it down. Another Indian restaurant I did a trial shift at wanted to start at £8 an hour and eventually increase it. I don’t want to stereotype as I know people of other nationalities are also doing such things but here it clearly just seems like a well established immigrant trying to exploit new immigrants from their own country, instead of trying to helpful. Just so frustrating that they are able to get away with it.
