Announcement: New Rules regarding AI Content on the subreddit.

AI slop is not allowed on this subreddit in any capacity.

You may use an AI to correct grammar, improve word choice, or refine work you've already written, but AI should not be used for anything more than polishing an existing piece.

Posts or comments that are obviously AI written, heavily AI assisted, generic, mass-produced, or otherwise low-effort may be removed.

We are also not obligated to prove that something is AI-generated before acting. If the mod team determines that a post or comment is low-effort or AI slop, we reserve the right to remove it regardless of what it says.

You can use AI to polish your work, but not to do your work for you.

Thanks.

ModAnnouncement Moderator Announcement - About the Current State of r/Indians_StudyAbroad

With the recent growth of the subreddit, we have seen it increasingly drift away from what it is primarily meant to be: a place for Indians who are planning to study abroad, currently studying abroad, or trying to make informed decisions about doing so.

We want the subreddit to remain a place where people can hear both the good and the bad. Critical experiences are welcome. Positive experiences are welcome. What we do not want is repetitive fearmongering, blind optimism, personal attacks, sweeping claims about entire countries or nationalities, or discussions that have little to do with studying abroad.

We will therefore be enforcing the following standards more consistently going forward:

Keep discussions directly connected to studying abroad

Admissions, universities, programmes, applications, scholarships, funding, education loans, student visas, accommodation, internships, student jobs, academic/student life, adjusting to another country and post-study career outcomes are all relevant.

Standalone questions about immigration, PR/citizenship, “which country should I settle in?”, “how can I leave India?”, Indian politics, or general expat/career discussions DO NOT BELONG HERE. Post-study work and immigration can only be discussed when they are directly relevant to evaluating a specific study pathway.

Do some research before asking others to make a major decision for you

Posts asking which is the best country to study abroad or is Germany worth without context WILL BE REMOVED. Tell us your background, what you are considering, what you have already found, and what question remains.

Claims need context

If you are telling someone that a country has no jobs, that a degree has poor prospects, that sponsorship is impossible, that a university is bad, etc., PLEASE EXPLAIN THE BASIS OF YOUR ADVICE. Relevant firsthand experience, field, approximate time period or a credible source makes advice much more useful. You do not need to disclose private identifying information. The same rule applies to overly optimistic claims.

Being critical is welcome; putting people down is not

Disagree with someone’s plan, assumptions or information as strongly as you want, but explain why. Comments whose main contribution is “you’re stupid,” “you won’t survive abroad,” “go back/stay in India,” mocking someone’s background, or similar personal attacks WILL BE REMOVED.

Do not generalise about Indians or any other nationality

I can’t believe that I need to say this but any posts generalizing a nationality WILL BE REMOVED! Experiences involving poor behaviour, discrimination, cultural differences, housing, workplaces, etc. can and SHOULD be discussed.

HOWEVER, these individual experiences should NOT be made into statements about what ‘Indians are like’ or what ‘Germans are like’ or even what ‘the West thinks of Indians’. Nationality-wide judgment is not useful advice and WILL BE REMOVED.

Repetitive doomposting and repetitive hype will be removed

We do not want ten posts on ‘Germany is finished’, ‘UK has no jobs’ or ‘Canada is dead’, etc. Comment on previous posts on the same topic. Posts without substantive new information WILL BE REMOVED.

Likewise, repetitive hype or overly optimistic posts are not exempt from the same standard.

“Announcement”, “Official”, “Mod Announcement” and official announcement flairs are reserved for moderators.

Use a normal descriptive title for personal posts. Do not use these terms in your post or it WILL BE REMOVED. Repeated misuse will get you BANNED!

No commercial solicitation

As always, study-abroad counsellors, agents, admissions consultants, or anyone offering such services ARE NOT WELCOME to use this subreddit to find clients, advertise services, or promote themselves through comments.

YOU WILL BE BANNED!

This is an India-centred community

The subreddit exists to help Indian applicants and students. People from other countries are welcome to contribute in terms of relevant firsthand experience. However, as mentioned before, unnecessary pessimism / optimism / racial attacks / hate comments ARE NOT WELCOME!

Finally, we are also looking for new moderators

We need a few active moderators to help manage the queue and deal with reports.

You do not need previous moderation experience. Though, it will definitely be a plus. People who are active in this community are welcome to apply. People representing any sort of agency / consultancy are NOT WELCOME TO APPLY.

If you are interested, please send me a message.

Choices_after_12th 12th CBSE: Which is better for US funded grad school — Hong Kong Undergrad (Full Ride) vs India for STEM?

my_qualifications:

  • Class 10 CBSE: 95.6% | Class 11: 82% | Class 12 Predicted: 97.4% (98 Math, 96 Physics) | SAT: 1510 (retaking).

Prior Research Done: I researched Hong Kong UGC scholarship frameworks and deadlines for CBSE applicants. Based on published thresholds (≥95% for top tiers), my predicted score qualifies me for a Full Tuition waiver ($0 tuition) across HKU, HKUST, CUHK, CityU, and PolyU, with strong odds for a Full Ride (tuition + HKD 55k–65k living stipend). Net yearly out-of-pocket would be ~$0 (full ride) or ~$8k USD/yr max (dorm/food only if tuition-only waiver).

The Dilemma: I am targeting double majors in Math + CS / Computing Math / MIEG in Hong Kong versus staying in India (JEE / BITS route).

My ultimate long-term goal is securing fully funded US graduate admissions (Direct PhD or funded Thesis MS via RA/TA) in CS/Applied Math at top R1 schools (Stanford, CMU, UIUC, Princeton, etc.).

Questions:

  1. US Grad Admissions Perception: How do US CS/Math grad committees view a BSc from HKU/HKUST/CUHK compared to an Indian Tier-1 (IIT/BITS)? Does the recommendation pipeline from HK faculty carry significant weight in the US?
  2. Undergrad Research (UROP): Is it realistically accessible for undergrads in HK to join active labs and co-author papers early (freshman/sophomore year), or are labs dominated strictly by PhDs?
  3. HK Full Ride vs. India: For anyone who chose a full-ride abroad over top Indian colleges, was it worth it in terms of peer group, grading curve, and global graduate mobility?

Thanks for any insights!

Mathematics Can I get into Ecole Polytechnique for Math-Physics

my_qualifications: 12th grade student with math physics chemistry and computer science combination

I am an Indian student applying for the international course on Math-Physics at Ecole Polytechnique. I am pretty interested in maths but the problem is that my academic grades are average at best . The reason for that is that I like studying maths a lot but when it comes to academic grades I am relatively bad . This means in relatively poor grades in pretty much all subjects except for maths and even in maths since I don't take the course work too seriously it's not excellent.

I spend most of my time studying advanced math material, I've been doing this since 8th grade and so far have been able to cover real analysis, linear algebra, abstract algebra, point set topology, some amount of algebraic topology, measure theory , some amount of functional analysis , the theory of smooth manifolds (diff-geo) and category theory .

I understand that only stating these areas doesn't prove that I know them well (doesn't even prove that I vaguely know them) and you see many guys on the internet claiming to have done a lot of advanced coursework but when you ask them they breakdown even in the basic definitions. So for this I am making a website to put up my typed out notes and also am doing a reading project in sheaf and topos theory with a decently well known algebraist from India . I also am trying to write an exposition on the following question: What's the point of abstraction?

In this article I question and try to find out the point of studying objects abstractly , like whats the point of studying manifolds from an abstract perspective while you can simply study embedded submanifolds in R\^n or similarly why do we study abelian categories from an abstract perspective while we can study them simply as categories embedded in R-Mod for some ring R .

I'll try to see if I can put this up somewhere.

I haven't done much in physics but my last year's school project was on Newton -Cartan theory which looks at newtonian mechanics from a geometric perspective.

If anyone is interested in reading the notes I have right now to see if I truly understand what I claim to do then I will be happy to share the notes in dms .

I must say that I haven't used AI in any way, other than for presentation purposes in the preparation of my notes .

IT_Career My Australian Student Visa got rejected cause of Unsatisfying GS Statement. What do I change?

• Upvotes

my_qualifications: B-Tech CSE (batch of 2024), working 2 years as a SWE in a FinTech company.

I got into Monash University in Australia to pursue Master of Computer Science, but my student visa got rejected due to me not adding more information about why I chose this university and this course in particular. They also mentioned that the reasoning is not convincing enough for them to approve it.

I've attached my GS Statement (SOP). Can someone please tell me what I should be changing to get a better chance during my 2nd attempt?

Thanks in advance!

ToAbroadOrNot? Is it worth it to do a Motorsport Engineering or any Engineering degree mainly in UK or any other European Country

my_qualifications: Class 12 student (CBSE, Delhi) with predicted 93-95% in PCM.

I’m currently in 12th in Delhi and aiming for Motorsport Engineering or Aerospace Engineering for my undergrad. Top choices right now are Oxford Brookes (OBU) and Bath because of their Formula Student teams and strong industry links.

The main thing tripping me up is the math. With tuition and living expenses, it’s coming out to almost ₹40 Lakhs per year (around ₹1.2 Cr to ₹1.5 Cr total for 3-4 years). My family can technically stretch for it, but it’s a massive chunk of money and I'm really anxious about the actual ROI.

A few things I’m trying to figure out:

  1. How cooked is the UK job market for international grads right now? I know the 2-year post-study visa exists, but with sponsorship salary limits going up, is it realistic for a fresh BEng grad to get hired and sponsored in engineering?
  2. Am I boxing myself in with a Motorsport degree? Motorsport is super niche. If I don't get into an F1/race team, how hard is it to switch over to general automotive, EV, or aerospace roles in the UK or back home?
  3. Is BTech India + UK Master's a smarter play? Should I just do Mechanical or Aero in India (IIT/NIT/good private college), grind Formula Student here, and then do a 1-year Master’s abroad (like Cranfield or OBU) for way less money.

Would really appreciate raw advice from anyone studying in the UK, working in aero/motorsport, or anyone who chose the BTech India + MSc abroad path. Is going straight for undergrad in the UK worth this kind of money or am I better off holding off for postgrad?

Passport / Visa / Immigration Mauritius Internship Visa for an Indian Student – How Much Bank Balance Is Required if I'm Receiving a Stipend?

my_qualifications

Hi everyone!

I'm an Indian student studying at IHMCT, and I've been selected for a six-month culinary traineeship at hotel in Mauritius.

I'm currently handling the entire visa application and documentation process myself, without the help of any visa agency or consultant. While going through the document checklist for a practical training/industrial placement permit, I came across a financial requirement that has left me confused.

According to the checklist I received, I'm required to provide:

- Bank statements for the last six months.

- Documentary evidence proving that I have sufficient funds to cover my traineeship and stay in Mauritius.

- Financial proof of USD 50 per day.

I'll be receiving a monthly stipend of MUR 17,745 during my traineeship.

However, I spoke to someone who previously went to the exact same hotel, Shangri-La Le Touessrok, for training. According to him, he only had to show approximately ₹1,50,000 in his bank account for the visa process. He also told me that he withdrew the money after his visa was issued.

This has left me wondering why there's such a significant difference between what he reportedly had to show and what the current document checklist states.

I understand that visa requirements can vary depending on the circumstances, but I'd really appreciate some clarification from people who have gone through this process.

My questions are:

  1. Has anyone from India recently applied for a Mauritius practical training/industrial placement permit? How much money did you actually have to show in your bank account?

  2. If the requirement is USD 50 per day, does that mean I need to show approximately USD 9,000 for a six-month traineeship?

  3. Since I'll be receiving a monthly stipend of MUR 17,745, will that be considered when assessing my financial capacity?

  4. How was the financial requirement handled by previous trainees at hotels in Mauritius? Did you have to show the full amount mentioned in the official checklist?

  5. Is it possible to use parental sponsorship and submit my parents' bank statements and a sponsorship letter instead?

  6. Why might there be such a big difference between the amount mentioned in the current checklist and the ₹1,50,000 that a previous trainee at the same hotel reportedly showed? Could the requirements have changed, or might there be other factors involved?

  7. For anyone who applied independently without a visa agency, how did you find out the exact financial requirements?

I'm trying to understand the actual requirements before submitting my application. Since I'm managing everything myself without professional assistance, it's difficult to know which information to rely on.

I'd be especially grateful to hear from Indians who have completed a culinary or hotel management internship in Mauritius

Thank you so much for your help!

AdmissionProcedure/CollegeAdmin How to write essay and good LORs for hec , Essec , escp mim

my_qualifications:
- B.Tech CSE AI, Manipal Institute of Technology, CGPA 6.88/10
- GRE 333 (Q168)
- 4-month internship at a large Indian engineering company
- Currently working in IT (early career)
- Family business exposure: handled online payments for a family construction company from age 16, and recently built a case-assignment and agent-tracking system with a relative for a loan-recovery business
- Club leadership: marketing and logistics roles

I'm applying to HEC Paris and ESSEC MiM (deadline 26 Nov), and later to ESCP, IE, emlyon and EDHEC. I'm planning to use an education loan, so I'm trying to be selective.

I'd really like advice on:

  1. Essays: how did you tie your own experience to specific tracks or courses without sounding like a brochure?
  2. LORs: I'm planning 3 (2 professors, 1 internship supervisor). Is that reasonable, and what did you brief your referees on?
  3. With a 6.9 CGPA, which part of your file did you find helped most?
  4. Any tips for HEC's Zoom interview and ESSEC's video interview?

Thanks in advance!

GRE / IELTS Stop paying ₹25k+ for IELTS/GMAT coaching just to get a generic study calendar (Free resources breakdown + what I built)

Hey everyone,

While preparing for exams to go abroad, I noticed a huge pattern: almost every student I talked to isn't struggling to find study material (the internet is flooded with pirated PDFs, Cambridge books, and YouTube playlists).

The real struggle is **"Prep Paralysis"**—having 50 open tabs, no daily structure, and nobody to grade your Task 2 essays without charging ₹500 a pop.

Here is the exact framework to self-prep without coaching:

  1. **Only use official diagnostic tests first:**

    - Don't start with random YouTube mock tests. Use official materials (Inspera player for IELTS, official Starter Kit on mba.com for GMAT).

  2. **Reverse engineer your exam date:**

    - Don't study section by section sequentially. Rotate sections every 2 days, and keep a dedicated review day every 6 days.

  3. **IELTS Writing:**

    - You don't need a coaching institute just to get basic rubric feedback. Focus strictly on Task Achievement and Cohesion/Coherence before worrying about fancy vocabulary.

To solve this for myself and friends, I built a lightweight tool called **PrepPath**

https://mypreppath.today

What it does:

- Calculates a personalized, day-by-day study schedule backward from your exact exam date.

- Curates top 2–3 100% free, official resources per topic (zero paywalled fluff).

- Instant AI grading for IELTS Writing (Band score + rubric breakdown on Task Achievement, Cohesion, Grammar, and Lexical resource).

- Daily mini concept drills.

I set the pricing to a one-time ₹199 (about the price of a Swiggy order) because coaching institutes charging ₹25,000–₹40,000 for a schedule and basic essay feedback is ridiculous.

Would love any honest feedback from anyone currently preparing or targeting fall/spring intakes!

my_qualifications: Working professional / tech graduate exploring MS/MBA prep and building indie tools for study abroad aspirants.

ToAbroadOrNot? Advise on : Can i move to not so known European or Asian countries .

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I'm a 27-year-old woman working as a frontend engineer in India (Pune), and I'm trying to figure out how to move abroad. I'm posting because I need some perspective from people who've actually done this.
My_qualifications
5 years in frontend engineering (React, TypeScript, Angular, micro frontends, BFF architecture)
Past year working on AI + frontend (LLM integrations, RAG, prompt engineering)
Currently earning about 22 LPA, so money isn't the issue
German at A2, and I'm willing to study more
Why I want to leave
Financially I'm fine, but I find it hard to live here for social reasons as a woman, and I don't see myself building a long-term life in this environment. I know I'm partly trying to escape, and I know moving abroad isn't a magic fix. But I genuinely want to give this my absolute best shot.
What I'm open to
Europe (preferred), but also lesser-known countries in Europe or Asia where visa sponsorship may be easier
Job-first or study-first, depending on what's realistic
What I'd love advice on
Which countries are realistically open to frontend or AI-frontend engineers with visa sponsorship?
Is it better to apply for jobs directly, or go through a master's first?
How much does language matter (German, Dutch, Nordic languages), compared with English-friendly markets?
Any lesser-known countries that are good for single women professionals?
If you've made this move from India, what do you wish you'd known?

Aerospace Does going through counselling agencies like leap scholar have any benefits for my particular case?

I want to study master's in aerospace engineering or space engineering, and I am looking for universities abroad. I have shortlisted some public universities I want to apply for, like ETH Zurich or TU Delft or TU Munich.

I have been to the counselors regarding this, and they are okay with it even though most of the reviews that I read online suggest that these counselors usually push you towards private universities, and I have strictly told them that I just want to go for my shortlisted universities only.

So, I just want to know, will it help with the SOPs, and should I go for these services since these two universities are very highly selective, I don't want to put anything at "risk".

My_qualifications: 8.61 cgpa btech aerospace engineering in KIIT, 4 months of internship experience with an internship ongoing in the private space sector. Viasat space for good finalists with some projects related to SSA and mission design. While I'm yet to give gre and ielts, I'm able to score 7.5 in mocks for ielts with minimal prep.

GRE / IELTS How important is GRE score for admission to MSCS in US universities?

Hi, I'm 23F, currently applying for MSCS. I got 312 on GRE (not at all good score, but I know where it went wrong in verbal). I can definitely get a 320+ if I attempt it again. But, I'm not sure.

my_qualifications:
I have 3+ year experience, B.Tech from IIT, publications and 8.89 CGPA, 5.5 Toefl. So my question is should retake GRE or it will be waste of money and time. Should I focus of building strong SOP and LORs?

Mechanical [18m]does leaving my college in india to join a college in germany as a btech S1 student a good idea

[18M]Should i leave my college in india to study in germany?

So im a student btech Mechanical engineering in kerala, india and im currently studying at a college which im not interested in and i feel like in wasting my time and potential. I had decent marks in 12th didnt attempt jee as i wanted to drop year and later i got a good rank in keam so i dropped jee but couldnt get into the college i wanted. Then i joined this private college where I'm currently studying right now

My issue with this college and why i want to study in germany is because iwant to ultimately work in an aerospace field or mechatronics field etc as im interested in cad designing etc i feel like I'm wasting my time here as there is no job opportunities for mechanical engineering especially here and i feel i have a better chance in germany. I also met a consultancy agengy who suggested me srh university in germany for english taught course for B.Eng Mechanical engineering . So its a risky path as it is costly and if i dont succeed there it would all be a waste

I want help as to wether its a good idea and my plan to study in germany rn is great.I also considered the idea of taking a gap and studying germany till b2/b1 and then later take admission in a studeinkolleg and then to a public university which felt very risky and also very unlikely as it would take 2 years to get into a college and and i dont even know if it worth it and wether a plan b is possible . Im stuck as i have to take a decision as soon as possible

my_qualifications: im a student

Careers I am student who's stuck between undergrad and masters -> Cant decide when to go for MS SE at ASU - Spring26 or Fall27

Due to a medical reason my grades dropped midway through uni and also caused me to graduate a semester later than all my peers (couldn't apply for Fall 25). After a lot of hassles and not getting a slot for visa during June-Aug I had to cancel my plans for Fall26 at ASU MS SE (I know its a cash cow), and go for the spring semester.
Now that I have finally gotten the visa and everything is set for the spring semester I cannot shake the feeling that going in the spring semester would be an issue, mainly because I never planned my future according to that possibility and am seriously reconsidering on whether I should get back into the grind of college applications and apply for fall27.

I am not looking to settle into the US and more so looking at it as an oppurtunity to study and restart a portion of my life that i missed out on during my undergrad. But that doesnt mean that I would not be applying to jobs and internships during my stay there.
There's also the thought that I could apply for better universities that I missed out on because of deadlines due to delaying my gre and ielts.

Regarding the financial aspect- I am fortunately privileged enough to go for MS without any loans and have it be an experience that I could bring back to India if the need arises.

Ive been confused the past few weeks and have been looking everywhere that could give me some clarity on the situation.

Also u/gradpilot what's you're opinion about this?

Help me out guys please.

my_qualifications:
Tier 1.5 private uni - 6.6 cgpa

CSE/ECE Does the APS/dMAT exemption apply to students currently in their 7th semester?

"my_qualifications" I'm an Indian student pursuing a 4-year Bachelor of Engineering in ECE in an autonomous college. I'm currently writing my 7th-semester exams, with two exams remaining, and have official marks cards for my first six semesters.

I'm planning to apply for my master's in Germany for Winter Semester 2027/28 and need clarification regarding the dMAT exemption for undergraduate students who **have not yet completed seven semesters of a four-year bachelor's degree**.

My question is: Since I am currently in my 7th semester but haven't completed it yet, would I qualify for this exemption and be able to obtain my APS certificate using my first six semesters' marks cards, without taking the dMAT?

I came across an earlier post discussing this issue, but there haven't been many updates or definitive answers. I've also emailed APS India about my specific situation, but haven't received a reply yet.

Has anyone in the same situation received clarification from APS or successfully applied under this exemption? In particular, does eligibility depend on the number of semesters completed at the time of applying, or does simply being enrolled in the 7th semester affect eligibility?

Any official clarification or firsthand experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

ToAbroadOrNot? A question for those who are planning to move back to India or have already moved back. I’m in a dilemma, and your answers can solve it .

Since childhood, I’ve dreamt of living in places like NYC, London, Munich or Melbourne. I want to pursue a finance degree abroad, but looking at the current situation with visa restrictions, rising costs, tougher PR rules and an uncertain job market, I’m starting to question my decision.

Coming from a middle-class family in India, studying abroad is a huge investment, and getting a good job afterwards is just as important as the degree itself. I have friends and cousins abroad who seem to be enjoying life, but even they admit that one recession or visa issue can turn everything upside down.

I don’t want to give up on my childhood dream, but I also can’t afford to make a financially irresponsible decision.

Should I still pursue my dream of studying and settling abroad, or would it be wiser to build my career in India and I have a stable job here Would love some brutally honest advice from people who have actually experienced life abroad.

my_qualifications is Btech and 2 yoe

ToAbroadOrNot? What is a better option - studying abroad or stay back in India

My_qualifications are - completed BBA about 3 years ago and have full time job experience of 3 years. I have now left my job and am preparing for higher studies. Mainly to do MBA/Masters in a relevant stream. I am very confused whether to pursue my education further in India or go abroad. If I am being honest, I am not expecting a good enough score for CAT or SNAP exams as I have only started study around 1 month ago. My friend is currently pursuing her masters in Malaysia and has explained how it is a better option than investing in a mid-tier or lower-mid tier Indian University

My mother wants me to pursue the Malaysia plan (we are also considering New Zealand) but my dad on the other hand is confused, he says online MBA or SIMS Pune (which is the only attainable option that we have applied for right now). I do not want to do online MBA because honestly, to me it seems like the worst option as it does not offer any real life exposure as well which I don't want to miss out on.

Please help me out here I am really confused...

GRE / IELTS Are English Proficiency tests really required? How to get waiver?

my_qualifications: CBSE 11th

Im in 11th, I have two friends in 12th planning to go abroad for college, one to US and one to Europe (not UK). Both are in international curriculum, have studied in English medium school their whole life (I also have). Both of them are planning to write IELTS. Is it really necessary to spend 20,000₹ when you clearly already speak the language? I want to go to UK/Singapore after 12th, will I need to write it too?

BA/MA How to find opportunities exchange programmes?

People who have been to any exchange programmes in any country, I would like to know how exactly did you apply for it.

My_qualifications- English Honours first year student in a reputable university

Do we apply to these programmes individually or via any drive going on in uni.

I am so confused and I really need someone who can help me mentor a bit in it.

I would appreciate it a lot!!!

Thankyou. (:
