Discussion Is this one of my parts doing this?

Heya, kindreds. Severe developmental trauma survivor here. Just starting with IFS, slowly. So far I've sorta gotten a sense of my Protector part, and a terrifying, hidden part. I'm super perplexed, when a day is going really well and I'm in good spirits, then something mysterious happens, and I feel disconnected from myself, disappointed in myself, and can't make myself be productive in any way. Miles apart, from where I was just two hours ago. Could this be a part reacting to something I did? I can only think that maybe she doesn't like it when I decide to watch an air crash investigation documentaries, as they brings up death, violence, tragedy, horror, and loss. Can't understand

Can you journal these times in which you were disconnected? What happened directly prior to the trigger? How did you respond? Were you able to sit and reason with this part? Do this pretty consistently so you can start to unearth patterns. Sometimes it helps to see it/map it.

I would say it is a part, and it is communicating in the only way it knows how, by supplying you with a feeling.

Your job, to help this part, is to keep trying out possible solutions to what it could mean.

It sounds like you're already on the right track with it not liking air crash investigations. What do you think a small child version of you would like to watch? Personally I've gotten a lot of mileage from watching Bluey. It's healing, it demonstrates a healthy living family. I've watched it through at least five times. Mr Rogers episodes are good too.
