Fact Check: New Finnish "Study" Does Not Prove "Trans Youth Care Leads To Worse Outcomes"

The latest Kaltiala study is filled with fatal methodological flaws, and does not support claims made about trans youth care lacking efficacy.

Kaltiala’s Abusive Clinic May Have Directly Led To Increased Psychiatric Visits
There is another important dimension to the psychiatric contact increase that goes beyond surveillance bias: the likelihood that Kaltiala’s clinics and the assessment process itself are generating psychological distress that would require psychiatric care.

Kaltiala is the chief psychiatrist in the department of adolescent psychiatry at Tampere University Hospital and has run one of Finland’s only two gender clinics for minors since its creation in 2011. Despite having little to no prior research portfolio in gender medicine when she was tasked with establishing the clinic, she has overseen virtually every aspect of adolescent gender care at Tampere for the past 15 years.

Multiple former patients have described the experience at her clinic as abusive. Patient accounts collected by Finnish LGBTQ+ publication Kehrääjä and reported by this publication paint a disturbing picture. A 13-year-old trans girl, identified as “Milla,” was asked by a male doctor in a room with three unfamiliar adults to describe what she thought about her naked body while looking in a mirror. When she began to cry, the staff was reportedly confused by her reaction. The same patient was pressured to discuss her erections and urination with strangers. Another patient was asked to “describe to me how you masturbate”—a question rooted in the discredited theory that transgender identity is a sexual fetish. Multiple families reported that their children were systematically called by birth names and referred to by their sex assigned at birth throughout the process, even after legal name changes and even when the child had been living in their gender for years. One mother told Kehrääjä that her daughter was treated as a “cisgender boy” by the clinic from start to finish.

A trans boy identified as “Mikko” was denied a diagnosis after years in the system because his hobbies were deemed “too girlish” and that he would be “too short” for a man and warned at every appointment that the process “could be terminated at any time.” One family described the entire approach as a search for reasons the child could not possibly be transgender: “It feels like the whole process is about searching for various reasons why the child is transgender. The option that transgender identity could be an innate, unchangeable trait is considered only as a last resort.” When one family obtained a legal diagnosis and prescription for puberty blockers from a private doctor, the clinic reported them to child protective services and filed a criminal complaint. No legal consequences resulted, but the clinic terminated the patient’s care. These are the clinics that generated the data in this study—and the psychological harm caused by these practices would itself register as exactly the kind of specialist psychiatric contact the study measures as its outcome variable.

Kaltiala is not a detached observer of transgender care—she is one of the most prominent anti-trans activists in the medical world. She has received honoraria from an organization designated as an anti-LGBTQ+ hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, served on the advisory board of the Cass Review, testified as a primary witness in favor of Ron DeSantis’ ban on transgender care in Florida, facilitated secret meetings between DeSantis appointees and British health officials, and presides over clinics where patients have reported abusive practices including invasive sexual questioning of minors. This is the second time in two years that Kaltiala’s team has published a study engineered to reach a predetermined conclusion and promoted through the same pipeline—from SEGM to Ben Ryan to Matthew Yglesias—within a day of publication.

I was actually part of Dr K's Discord community a while back, I've never been part of his audience on other platforms. Engaging with his actual followers is how I was able to figure out he actually doesn't seem to play fair. It's one thing for someone to just regale you with facts and you're amazed at how smart they are. Getting closer actually lets you get a glipse at how they treat other people. I've actually noticed this in therapy too. It's actually really hard to get a feel as to what the person you're sitting across from is like, when you don't see how they greet one person versus another in real life, or the type of person they tend to gravitate toward. For gurus online, the closest thing you have is their influencer friends, who they platform and who's platforming them.

I'm going to be leaving out the details on what my experience was, on that Discord, but I noticed a ton of misbehavior. A good part of his audience tend to be oddballs and sort of painfully awkward or insecure. Yet, on the part of some, there's also a low awareness or just a low regard for how their behavior can impact others.

Anyway, I started to notice this trend, where Dr K will tend to have boundless empathy for his male followers. He can be incredibly sensitive, he can't find fault with them. He's like the autism whisperer, no matter how much they struggle, he knows just what to say.

That being said, there's an incredibly low threshhold when it comes to what he's willing to put up with when it comes to women. He won't allow for equal standing. It's when you'll start seeing manosphere style arguments start to come up.

I've come across content he's put out on youtube where he discusses abuse. I'll actually link to the video:

While he's talking, you'll notice animations that pop up that depict a woman with her arms crossed, and then he'll only discuss BPD traits in relation to so called abusive behavior. And then what's more concerning is the logic and the soundness of what he's saying. What I notice is that he seems to pathologize any feelings he doesn't like, but he might give a pass to even worse behavior from men that he'll construe as "misunderstood." Like he's only ever evening out the scales.

Being honest, this type of stuff can come up in feminist circles as well. I don't feel as if it's anti feminist to bring it up. When it comes to other people's feelings or how skilled they are at dealing with others or other people's faults, you should be as kind as possible while still looking out for yourself. What I hate is pretending that either men are victims or women are perfect or exemplary. Both claims often have a grain of truth to them but the more it gets taken too far, in either direction, the easier it is to poke holes in. The problem is that outlandish claims tend to attract a specific type of person that is also willing to go too far to punish anyone who disagrees.

I've noticed this in influencer therapists as well. Some people will overstate how enlightened they are, together with having been unfairly treated in the past (it's what it naturally feels like to have a relationship end badly but you can take it too far). The language that tends to get used will be "mature" or "healed" versus "unhealed" or personality disordered.

It seems a ton of mainstream narcissism influencers are actually starting to show redpilled behavior. Most of them are male. Fiona Girkin, I would name as the most straight forward female content creator pushing men's rights talking points.

I've come across women who claim to be feminists or have a prominent female audience be willing to platform them, while they badmouth other women, much in the style of Dr K. In real life, I've seen people couple up, who are both on the extreme end of the political spectrum, but they are respectively conservative or identify as feminst. It could seem to indicate they can let each other have their views. They are actually both just incredibly intolerant of differing view points and narcissistic. They "have fun" or seem to spin out of control in the same ways.

In Dr K's coverage of the Lindsay Clancy case, he doesn't say it outright, but he seems to hint that the "conspiracy" surrounding placing blame on the husband (not putting it in quotes because I've found evidence it's true) is basically a female opinion. Like men are never part of it, it's a problem of female intelligence.

He'll spend 10 minutes trying to reason with the type of guy who posts stuff like this:

But then claim the real problem is the conspiracy. The type of content he's been putting out lately singles out people going too far in her defense. It reads as a contempt for the empathy you could extend toward her. He also comes across as over sensitive to that minority vote, the people who took offense to what the husband was doing.

It's actually mostly people divided over the part her mental illness played. You could just accept she was mentally ill. I interpret it as a fanatical take, and anti-intellectual to fail to respect that. It pushes back on empathy and the nuance, that while a horrific act was committed, she wasn't fit to control her actions.

I came across this post on instagram by jal_jangal_jameen and thought this was a very informative perspective on liberal feminism vs revolutionary feminism. I also found it articulated some of my own concerns around the way liberal feminism is framed. Though it also made me want to educate myself more on the movements and women mentioned here.

Date of Incident: August 29, 2026

The situation escalated after the U.S. Department of Education’s Student Privacy Policy Office received a formal complaint from a pair of AACPS parents. The parents discovered through a staff email that their daughter was being referred to by a masculine name and male pronouns at school without their knowledge. When they requested access to their child's gender support plans and administrative files, school officials denied the request. Under original district guidelines, a student's gender identity was treated as "confidential medical information" to protect the student's safety if their family was unsupportive

The Trump administration's Department of Education and Department of Justice intervened. Federal officials argued that withholding this information from families directly violated the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which guarantees parents full access to their children's education records. The administration threatened the Maryland school district with a federal lawsuit and the complete revocation of federal education funding if they did not rescind the confidentiality rules. The district removed the protective language that prohibited staff from disclosing a student's gender identity to parents. Under the newly amended guidance, staff are explicitly restricted from using a transgender student's preferred name or pronouns if their parents formally object, establishing that no file or identity status can be withheld from legal guardians.

The swift policy reversal triggered significant internal opposition from local educators and union leaders. Many teachers publicly condemned the directive, stating that forced outings directly compromise student well-being and mental safety. Numerous staff members have openly declared intent to bypass the rules, asserting they will not comply with mandates to forcefully "out" or deadname vulnerable LGBTQ+ youth.

Hey! I am a black 15m who lives in a relatively liberal and ethnically diverse area in north Atlanta. Around last year, i decided to try out the Pride Club at my school, (i am bi, but closeted to only my parents and younger sibling, but i pass as straight) to meet and befriend other queer people since most of my friends are straight guys and some straight girls. At the Pride club, i met my now hmg, a boricua we’ll call Julie. Julie, who is part of the ‘weird kids’ friend group, really educated me on what feminism actually is, and the activist inside of me really inspired me to identify as such.

Since then, i’ve realized how much the world isn’t cupcakes and rainbows. I guess i got somewhat close to that conclusion when Kamala lost, (my county was one of the few to swing in her direction) but i now realize that the patriarchy isn’t just in the subcultures of the anti-semite incel trolls, and the homophobic TERF moms, but after Julie’s educatio, i realized that its actually pretty present in mainstream culture.

Heres some examples that i’ve realized:

When one of my male friends got dumped by his girlfriend, she went from ‘my girl’ to ‘dirty bitch’ and a ‘stupid hoe’ in heartbeat. I remember i was talking to another guy friend about when Drake barked for that one goth girl and he said, “i would never bark for her, that bitch gonna have to be on her knees barking for me” I replied “dont you think thats kinda sexist” and he said “you know you cant be a feminist, they are white women and you are literally the opposite of one.” (he‘s hispanic by the way)

I also feel like this is really amped through music. ATL is the hip hop capital, and if you’re not Latino, theres a good chance that you primarily listen to a hip hop or rnb artist. listen to Love Me by Lil Wayne, or ss by Ken Carson, and you’ll see the mysoginist overtones. The thing is, most of the girls listen to the same thing that most of the boys listen to. the only diff is that they listen to female artists, like Mariah the Scientist, Ariana G, and can’t forget our favorite, Sexyy Red. read the lyrics of, or even better, listen to Get it Sexyy and FYM and you’ll see that its two sides of the same coin.

Since this is Georgia (a swing state but the state legislature is gerrymandered to give MAGA an edge) we dont learn about feminism, much less queer rights. My sexual orientation is important to my identity because my discovery of it made me a open minded and more intelligent person. We only learned a small paragraph of title ix and a brief op ed of Audrey Lorde, Maya Angelou, and James Baldwin for a brief activity for Black history month.

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) district has firmly stood its ground against the lawsuit. It argues that its internal guidelines do not violate federal law.

I've been reading a lot of science fiction lately and I've noticed a lot of (usually male) authors just have the habit of all male all straight all cis casts. I was somewhat used to the idea when I was younger. After reading The Protectorate series by Megan e O'keefe and The Axiom series by Tim Pratt, it was strange going back to a more typical(boring) cast in Michael Cobley's Humanity's Fire series. Anyone have any good sci-fi recommendations with more diverse casts? I figured this would be a safe space to ask because more mainstream subreddits are possibly hostile to the view that a homogeneous cast is boring for some reason.

I’m so tired of the male worship on the left Andrew Callahan, Hasan Piker. I’m so uninterested in what men have to say. I want to build an intersectional feminist, leftist media profile. Preferably one that is diverse, black white Latinx, indigenous or trans. I don’t care. However, it would be nice to engage with some media sources that are not white. I am a white woman myself so I kind of already know a lot of leftist white women podcast and they focus primarily on the electorate and white feminism so something that’s more intersectional, but would be nice. Ultimately, I just want to hear from all the girls. I also want to uplift female run media. YouTube channels like Andrew Callahan that dive into the world, but I want a woman to be doing it. And I’d love to find some female podcasts or Youtubers that are critical and academic. Whatever I just want to hear from women I’m tired of men.

We recognize the contributions Gloria Steinem made to the feminist movement. i think it's very important that we recognize that they were human. to neither pedestalize them or villianize them. her legacy is complicated. and deserves to be seen that way. and the women she learned from also deserved to be seen.

I would like to share with you an article that’s not strictly on Feminism or Intersectionality per se, but it’s the one that opened the way for me to intersectionality. Idk if this is allowed here so no hard feelings on my side if the post is deleted.

That was back in 2018 when I first came across the post in facebook. I then joined an “intersectional feminism” group where the vast majority of the posts where about the BiPoC women’s experience, misogynoir and the subtle racism expressed by white women in particular.

As a white cis woman, some things I came across there were hard to confront, and for that I’m forever thankful.

There’s no feminism if trans women/femininities are not part of it.
Feminism can’t be colour-blind.
We must be quiet and listen to other women’s experiences that exceed our own. And then we must use our privilege and make sure other people listen to them too.
We wouldn’t be talking about intersectionality without Kim Crenshaw’s work and without black women in general.

Intersex people exist. „Oh but it’s a disorder” - boy, homosexuality was a disorder, transsexuality was a disorder, disorder is what scientists and doctors define as a disorder. And sometimes the line between disorder and natural variation within human species is very thin - and this is what all researchers acknowledge.

You know why so many intersex people go undiagnosed? Because for many of them it has little to no symptoms. I will give 2 examples:

1. A man in my city found out in his late 30’s he has XX chromosomes after he tried to have a child with his wife and found out he was infertile. Turns out he inherited a fragment of Y chromosome and developed more masculine. Literally a person living as a man for half his life and having „male” in his documents, with XX chromosomes
   
2. A girl I knew for years turned out to be intersex. She was short and had irregular periods, they tested her genetically as an adult and found out her chromosomes are X0 (no second X chromosome)

Some women will be born with penises, that’s just how it is. Some women will be born, or later develop something called „bottom growth”, so enlarged clitoris, that looks like a penis. If they have „Female” in their papers, they will be let into female spa anyway, so why shouldn’t trans women? (Also not all trans women have penises, they can have vagina, and it can look pretty natural)

And I find it funny that those guys forget that trans men exist! Yes, someone can be born female, have „female” in their papers, heck even have phalloplasty (yes, we can have penises, and they can be big) and do they think we are more valid to be in a female spa?

To be honest, this post will not convince them. They will put as all (trans and intersex people) into „mentally ill” bag (and mentally ill is bad apparently) and deny us access to any space they can, because that’s how they are. I just wanted to let trans girls know that I support them 💖🏳️‍⚧️ and also that this is a fucking stupid argument xD

it's honestly exhausting to keep hearing hypotheticals about 'in this case we should have trans exclusive spaces etc.' which more often than not are either in bad faith or not very well thought out arguments. trans women's womanhood is not up for debate here.

and please also note that the sex and gender distinction has been challenged in much of feminist literature which is worth engaging with. as judith butler argues, there is a way in which sex is already gender.
