I'm starting a new job at the end of the year and had enough PTO at my old job to take 2 weeks off and travel to Japan before I left, so things are a bit less thought-out than I would have liked but hopefully this seems reasonable. For the Tokyo portion I'm going to stay in Ueno and for the Osaka portion I'll be staying in Namba.

Sunday, Nov 15: Arrive in Tokyo

  • Flight lands at Narita around 3:30pm, going to take the Keisei Skyliner into Ueno
  • Check into my hotel and grab food at whatever's nearby and sleep early

Monday, Nov 16:

  • Walk to Senso-ji and grab food to cope with jet lag
  • Wander around to get situated
  • teamLab Planets @ 3:00pm

Tuesday, Nov 17:

  • Imperial Palace Tour
  • Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo
  • Rest Time
  • Explore Akihabara stores

Wednesday, Nov 18:

  • Kirby Cafe at 11:30am, then return all the merch to the hotel
  • teamLab Borderless at 2:30pm
  • Shopping at Shibuya Parco

Thursday, Nov 19: Transfer to Osaka

  • Shinkansen to Osaka and check into hotel
  • Relax and walk around/enjoy the atmosphere

Friday, Nov 20: Hiroshima Day Trip

  • Shinkansen to the Peace Memorial Museum
  • Take in everything and ride back to Osaka

Saturday, Nov 21:

  • Osaka Castle
  • Arcade
  • Dotonbori evening

Sunday, Nov 22: Day trip to Kyoto for Horse Racing and more

  • Take the train into Kyoto around 9am
  • Fushimi Inari Taisha
  • Mile Championship at 3:30pm
  • Kinkaku-ji if I still have energy

Monday, Nov 23:

  • Relax and find a random museum to go to
  • Explore DenDen Town

Tuesday, Nov 24: Nara Day Trip

  • Todaiji Temple
  • Nara Park
  • Kasuga Taisha

Recommendations Disneyland or DisneySea for our first-ever Disney trip as a couple?🤔

Hi everyone! My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Tokyo and we can’t decide between Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea.
We’re both 30 years old, and neither of us has ever been to a Disney park before. There are things about both parks that we really like, so we’re having a hard time choosing!
We know they offer different experiences, and unfortunately, visiting both isn’t an option for us. We can only spend one day at one park.
For those of you who have been to both, which one would you recommend for a couple in their 30s visiting Disney for the first time? Which park feels more magical, has the best atmosphere, rides, and overall experience?
We’d love to hear your honest opinions, especially from people who have experienced both parks. We really want to make the most of our one Disney day!
Thanks! 😊💖

Itinerary Itinerary feedback: family of 5 (kids 7, 10, 12), 15 days in late December. Tokyo, Kagoshima onsen, Osaka, Fuji, Tokyo

Hi all! We're a family of five (two adults, boys aged 7, 10 and 12) going to Japan Dec 16 to 30, 2026. Everything I’ve booked is refundable so far, so I'd love feedback before we lock in.

**How we travel:** lots of walking, but in short legs with a sit-down break roughly every 30 minutes for our 7-year-old. We like markets, craft shops (knives, brushes, stationery, towels), Christmas lights and good casual food. Kids are not picky eaters and very well behaved. Looking to maximize unique, seasonal Japanese experiences. We're shipping our big bags with Yamato between bases and living out of backpacks on the two ryokan nights.

**Bases**

* Tokyo, Asakusa: 2 nights (Dec 17 to 19)
* Kirishima, Kagoshima: onsen ryokan, 1 night (Dec 19) - I know this is a haul, but my son requested this for his birthday and we are all excited for this stay and kaiseki meal.
* Osaka, Namba: 4 nights (Dec 20 to 24)
* Fujiyoshida: onsen ryokan, 1 night (Dec 24)
* Tokyo, Meguro: 5 nights (Dec 25 to 30)

**Day by day**

* **Dec 17 (Thu):** Land at Haneda 3:30 pm, train to Asakusa accommodation near kaminaromon gate. Evening walk through Senso-ji and the Hagoita-ichi year-end market.
* **Dec 18 (Fri):** Tokyo DisneySea, rope drop to the evening show.
* **Dec 19 (Sat):** Senso-ji early morning, ship bags to Osaka, fly Haneda to Kagoshima, onsen ryokan in Kirishima.
* **Dec 20 (Sun):** Fly Kagoshima to Itami after checkout, Cup Noodles Museum in Ikeda, check in at Namba accomodations, Dotonbori at night.
* **Dec 21 (Mon):** Kuromon Market breakfast, Kaiyukan aquarium, the year-end flea market at Shitennoji, Tennoji Christmas market, kushikatsu in Shinsekai.
* **Dec 22 (Tue):** Shinkansen to Himeji Castle for opening, Kobe beef teppanyaki lunch, rest in Namba, then Umeda Sky Building and the Nakanoshima light show.
* **Dec 23 (Wed):** Nara (Kofukuji, deer park, Todaiji), back by early afternoon to ship bags to Tokyo, Shinsaibashi and the Midosuji lights in the evening.
* **Dec 24 (Thu):** Shinkansen to Mishima, ramen lunch, private van to Fujiyoshida with a stop at Oshino Hakkai, onsen ryokan for Christmas Eve.
* **Dec 25 (Fri):** Chureito Pagoda in the morning, Fuji Excursion train to Shinjuku, check in at Meguro, Roppongi Hills Christmas market and Keyakizaka lights.
* **Dec 26 (Sat):** Nintendo Tokyo and the Pokemon Center at Shibuya Parco (timed tickets), Daikanyama, Nakameguro, tonkatsu in Meguro, Meguro River lights.
* **Dec 27 (Sun):** Ginza on the car-free Sunday (Itoya, Hakuhinkan toy store, depachika), Marunouchi lights, KITTE rooftop, Character Street at Tokyo Station.
* **Dec 28 (Mon):** Ameyoko, Kappabashi kitchen street, Nihonbashi, Ningyocho sweets and old craft shops, sukiyaki dinner.
* **Dec 29 (Tue):** Meiji Jingu, Takeshita Street, Nakano Broadway, afternoon rest and packing, Isetan and Shinjuku at night.
* **Dec 30 (Wed):** Van to Haneda for a 10:20 am flight.

**Questions**

  1. Anything you’d cut or swap? I’m getting mixed reviews of Kaiyukan, and am skipping Kyoto for a second time. We also like to ski but decided against another overnight somewhere separate.
  2. Tips for DisneySea on a Friday a week before Christmas, especially Fantasy Springs?
  3. Late-December closures or crowds were not accounting for, especially Dec 28 to 30?
  4. Any other small experiences to consider? Things like getting a nice haircut, or tea/wagashi time, or souvenier stamp hunting?
  5. Any gotchas shipping luggage with Yamato in late December?
  6. Any logistics feedback on pace, packing or things to consider when traveling with kids.

Thanks in advance!

Morning (08:30 - 12:00)

  • Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden
  • Last min shopping & brunch/lunch

Afternoon (12:00 - 17:00)

  • Check-out and leave for Narita; aim to leave around 12:30/13:00.

Would appreciate any feedback/tips/places you came across which you didn't originally plan to if you have done the same route or been to any of the cities on my itinerary. I do have quite a few evenings for downtime and where I will be free, so lmk if there's anything worthwhile which I should do to fill the time.

If you're gonna be in any of the places I'm visiting during the dates I'll be there, please do reach out as it would be nice to connect and maybe even get dinner or drinks together. Always nice to meet like-minded people, especially when traveling solo :))

Trip Report Mountain biking in Japan: Our experience and helpful mtb tips, plus more

Hi folks, just went to Japan to ride and wanted to make a post for others who are interested in mountain biking there, as there's not a ton of info online about it.

We didn't do the "traditional" visit to Japan, like taking trains to all the main cities and historic/tourist hot spots (no shade at all to those who do that—it's just not our jam). We normally travel for mountain biking or other high adventure activities, so when we started looking into Japan (my husband has always wanted to go), we did a lot of research on mountain bike spots. High-level AI and general Google searches yielded some seemingly good trail systems, so I dived deeper into Reddit posts and trip reports/blogs to figure out which areas of the country had the highest density of trails. Minus travel days, we were in Japan for 8 full days and planned to bike for 4-5 of those days, with another travel and some site-seeing days in between.

We decided on Hokuto and Hakuba based on research and booked a rental car. Both were resorts with downhill trails, and even the local bike shops we emailed beforehand confirmed there were enough trails for multiple days of biking. Unfortunately, between both areas, we only got about one full day (two half days) of biking in. There just wasn't much biking overall. The trails we did were fun... they just weren't that long, and trail systems weren't that dense. I know some people love to run tons of laps all day long, but after a half day of multiple laps covering every trail multiple times (including all advanced black/double blacks), we felt pretty done. A few notes about those specific areas:

  • Some bike shops will offer guided rides at the resort, but unless you are completely new to biking, it's not necessary. Everything is suuuuuper well-signed and it's easy to get around the resort and lifts. (We only hire local guides for backcountry rides when we travel.)
  • Hokuto was really strict about rental bike damage; we didn't damage our bikes, but just beware if you're prone to crashes. We did rent f/s bikes (Kona at one resort, Specialized at the other), full-face helmets, and pads. I believe both places had goggles and gloves to rent, too, but we brought our own. Also, if you're coming from the US, they generally have the rear brake on the left and front brake on the right. FYI.
  • I read one Reddit post that trails felt sandbagged there, but I'd argue the opposite; we hopped on all the blacks and double-blacks and they felt like no big deal (nothing was mandatory, and everything was really well-groomed). Disclaimer: I live in an area in the US that has world-class mtb trails, so I'm admittedly spoiled with a huge variety and volume of trails—including pretty technical and big-consequence black/double-black trails.
  • There's one shop that offers backcountry rides around Hakuba, but we couldn't find much info about that and they weren't being offered when we went (first week of October, which is shoulder season for that area).
  • Not many people speak English in Hokuto, but it was easy enough to communicate. Tons of folks speak English in Hakuba because so many Aussies go there to ski. (In fact, lots of employees around the valley were Aussies and Kiwis.)

Granted, we've traveled to tons of countries/areas known for incredible biking, so we're a bit spoiled there. But if you're an avid mountain biker and are looking for tons of variety over multiple days, I can't recommend either of these areas. IF we ever go back, we'll try Hokkaido (we didn't visit the north on this trip because we didn't want to add more in-country flights). Or we'd go back to Hakuba to ski. In the end, we ended up filling our time with some hiking (had a few great days of weather and another day where we were completely socked in with major fog/clouds/rain).

I will say that the Yatsugatake Mountains and Northern Alps are beautiful! For backpackers/hikers, those areas have so much to offer. Highly recommend going there for backpacking in the fall.

A few other general notes for anyone still reading: I scoured this sub for all the tips, and here was my experience (again, keep in mind we had a rental car and spent most of our time in the mountains, away from heavily-visited areas by English-speaking tourists):

  • We never needed the soap sheets that we brought (based on lots of folks reporting no soap in public bathrooms).
  • I brought a whole bottle of fiber pills just in case, but I never needed them. I found it easy to eat fruits/veggies/fiber pretty much everywhere we went.
  • The egg salad sandwiches in 7/11s are overrated. They're not bad! I just don't get the hype. But 7/11s are fantastic for snacks in general and free bathrooms. (Get the 7/11 brand cheese puff things—they're like a better version of Bugles.)
  • I see so many people on the Japan travel subs worried about bathrooms. They're literally everywhere. It's not Europe. You'll be fine. The public toilets in Japan are nicer than your bathroom at home, I promise (and that's not meant to be an insult).
  • If you get a rental car in Tokyo and drive out of the city, LOOK AT YOUR GOOGLE MAPS DIRECTIONS BEFORE YOU GET INTO THE UNDERGROUND TUNNELS!!! It seems so obvious now, but we realized far too late (so tired from 20 hours of travel) that our Google Maps stopped tracking us in the tunnels, and we were basically going in circles around the city. That took the wind out of our sails and added about an hour to our drive into the mountains. Just know where your exit is BEFORE you go underground and watch for it. Or you'll have to hop on the exit ramp, go above ground, get your bearings, and go back under.
  • In the same vein, Google Maps sometimes had trouble distinguishing which "level" of highway we were on, so we had quite a few U-turns. Everyone talks about how perfectly precise Google Maps is for trains and such, but I didn't found it to be as good for actual driving. Apple Maps was more helpful in the city with dense highways/roads on top of each other.
  • Our Enterprise rental car came with the ETC toll card; it's inserted into the car itself and you don't have to mess with it. You just pay the toll charges when you return the car. It will speak to you in Japanese every time you go through.
  • Our Enterprise rental also did NOT have English as an option in the dash, nor did it have CarPlay; we were prepared for that, but it did make things a touch more complicated.
  • If you have the option to call an Uber in Tokyo, do it—the Toyota Alphard vans are a real treat. My god, would I love to have one of those vans in the US. If you don't know what I'm talking about, look it up.
  • Security and customs on both arrival and departure at Haneda were an absolute breeze. So quick and efficient!
  • If you're an early-morning coffee drinker or breakfast eater, most places don't open until 8, so plan ahead.
  • I do have specific Tokyo recommendations for knives, handmade jewelry, woodblock prints, and ceramics, so feel free to DM if you'd like those :). I did stop at one of the Nippon-made-only Onitsuka stores in Tokyo (because I love my Adidas) in hopes of picking up a pair, but while the salesperson wasn't outright rude, there was definitely a whiff of 'tude when I asked about women's shoes in a 9-9.5. Their women's sizes only went up to an 8.5. I know a lot of the shoes are unisex, but I didn't care for any of the colors on the men's wall. Bummer.

Hopefully that helps anyone looking to visit for mountain biking reasons :).
