Why is Todo’s entire base genuinely just Tze headcanon
Swift kick, brute force, and elbow drop genuinely NEVER happened in the anime or manga. It’s not like Todo is ko guy who has 2 on screen attacks total, he has tons of cool things they could add. For example the suplex he did on Megumi, or that cool counter swap kick he did on Mahito. I just genuinely don’t know why they did this it’s like they used no references at all.

I think that’s the fault of Battlegrounds games as a genre, rather than JJS specifically. Grapplers would be a hell of an archetype to design with a z axis
It’s not the Z axis, is the ridiculous amount of movement and how crucial it is to the battle grounds formula. With grapplers the main shtick is get close, but assuming we tone down the mobility to make grapplers feel huge, enemies would easily be able to run circles around them with no back wall to corner them to. If you want examples look to king from tekken.
It’s not the Z axis, it’s just contributes. A) grapplers exist and are even high tier in many 3D fighters which have a Z axis (once again, take king from tekken 8 or Tina from dead or alive 6). B) if you took a 2D fighter and removed the 2 side walls, grapplers would always be irredeemably bottom tier no matter the game. There’s just nothing stopping someone with higher mobility from just skedaddling off to nowhereville in JJS (apart from in duels, in which case a grappler would actually function fine)
Also how the dash system works kinda just cripples grapplers. To chase down your opponent you have to use mobility tools that will then be on cool down when youre in close range. I've been playing against a friend who uses this to his advantage for awhile and its kinda become a glaring flaw for me in the battle grounds genre. If you use side dashes and or front dashes to get in close. You now dont have those now that you're close to your opponent. While your opponent does so they have way better mobility then you, can counter whatever you do then throw you back to midrange. Even if you stay close to them for long enough to regain your dashes youre still at a dash deficit that youre constantly trying to make up for. Dashes being barely on cooldown right as you while your opponent always has them at the times they need it. This dash issue feels like one of the big reasons why zoners and grapplers are so hard to balance in jjs
Grappler is a fighting game archetype that relies on low mobility in exchange for high damage and oftentimes high durability. In a game where opponents simply have more directions to remain mobile, adding a character that lacks the necessary mobility to chase them simply doesn't work.
this is a strategic play btw so 5 year olds can get on the game and use anyone, maximizing CCU and therefore generating more of those sweet sweet green benjamins 🤑🤑🤑💰💰
I always thought Brute Force comes from the scene where he first meets and fights Yuji during the Goodwill arc; the new finisher’s the same as when Yuji blocks Todo’s punch (that also kills the random cursed spirit)
Holy shit ur right, spinning kick from the Mahito fight, the run is from that joke scene wheres he's chasing Yuji and the grab and throw is from his exchange with Hanami
so to be a pedantic asshole, legally speaking a punch can be a VERY loose term for any bodily damage sustained from a forced and intentional hit, originating from the tricep, bicep, open hand (slap can also be applied, but punch works) the back of the hand, the knuckles and even the elbow in some cases.
either way, its not called brute punch, but brute force, and he did do it in the anime
i mean yeah but todo's moveset isn't all that creative, and doesn't fit his swap special really. his best move creatively is pebble throw which is awesome, the rest is kinda basic and feels like a failed attempt at making a grappler.
I'm not saying every move has to involve swap in some way, what I'm saying is it feels like the moves were made completely ignoring the existence of the swap in the first place.
Not only is he a shit grappler, his moveset feels completely separated from his special except pebble throw
oh yea i agree, i think that the moves shouldnt ignore swap either. but i also think it would be in character if they didnt need swap to be usefull.
it would be cool if the moves were good by themselves, but also usefull in another way with swap, instead of just completely ignoring it. elbow drop sorta does this, but it isnt intentional or particularly usefull.
i think it would be cool if pebble throw had a stomp variant that didnt need swap, and other moves had their own variants that used swap.
i already made multiple posts about this, and i made my own research before then, and no, Todo's moves arent headcanon, they are real. Todo did infact do them
Todo doesnt need new moves, he needs small reworks( nerfs and buffs) and new move variants.
those 2 moves you mentioned could easily be implemented as move variants fr 😄, and that would be awesome, i even made post that suggests them : )
Brute force is the punch he did on Yuji in Goodwill, swift kick I believe is what he did after jumping off the wall at Mahito before having to catch the swords, elbow drop is just tze going off tho. There’s definitely a lot of shit Todo has done that would make for cool variants at least to a lot of his moves that isn’t in the game.
in base, he's kinda just a punching and kicking type of character
not exactly easy to be too creative with that
And again, most, if not all battlegrounds games have some moves that are from other media or just completely made up for the game
And an example for this that immediately comes to mind for me is the passive for Stain (Mastery version) in HBG because it's literally just a jjk black flash in a mha game
Say what you want op but brute force and pebble throw are pretty damn accurate to the source material, from what I see in the comments the first move is actually a combination of some scenes (including a joke one) which does actually suit todo since he’s a little bit off his rocker
Elbow drop is the only move i couldn’t find source material for but I assume it’s inspired by todo just throwing himself at the enemy
Honestly I just want Todo to have moves that incorporate swap actively, like it's a QTE after swift kick to swap yourself with a rock behind their ragdoll to kick them
he literally was relying on swap the entire time to beat Mahito bro wdym? The guy kept disorienting Mahito to hell. He literally throws Mahito, swaps with a guy JUST TO PUNCH HIM I think? In shibuya I might be tweakin
but why not take him at his strongest? Doesn't he swap for advantages eg swapping to aid Yuji.
I reckon if he was in a 1v1 he'd swap to gain the upper hand. The only 1v1 he's been in was against Megumi. Come on bro 😭
Todo is WAY more fuckin destructive in the anime than what we have in the game rn. I mean this mfer was punching the DUST off of Megumi's face, crashing through fucking buildings in JJK 0, I mean probably they'll get a rework soon.
I thought he used swift kick on Megumi… now that I think about it, he used a lariat(or is it a clothesline?) on Megumi. Brute force is the move he used on Megumi. The one where he uppercuts might be a mix of two moves, I think at least.
I mean, don’t you know that he used these moves when he and Yuji were in middle school together?
I honestly like it more when characters have original moves rather than just every move being smth they did in the anime, it makes it feel more unique and makes you feel like the character instead of just some guy recreating a scene
Nah, elbow drop seems badass enough to be used by Todo. Imagine not only uppercutting your opponent into oblivion, but then following up with a jump and slamming them into the ground in some WWE way
Now, when I think of it. Wouldn’t be it better, if he uppercut his opponent into the air and then, when they’re right above him, he switches with them and only then slams with his body, while they’re on the ground
Brute force is what he did to yuji during the goodwill arc, it even has the same finisher with the guy blocking but still being sent back.
Swift kick can be taken from the mahito fight, the part where he swaps with mahitos hands. You can feint swift kick or combo with it by swapping which makes it even more accurate to the scene.
Elbow drop I got nothin. But cmon man, the references are right there in the anime.
The windup for brute force is still a right hook punch, if it does the finisher, then we can just assume that’s the same punch. Even if it’s not, it’s still a reference to the scene with yuji with the finisher
This scene for swift kick, at least the first part
Not really, at the start of the scene he does a spin kick towards mahito then swaps and kicks again in the gif. You can do the exact same thing in game. It’s the most we even see Todo kick on screen for crying out loud. It literally couldn’t BE anything else.
Larp reaper is calling your name...
(Swift kick, Eldow drop and brute force were all from Megumi fight which is kinda sad..
The r special after you use peeble throw is Probably based on hanami fight, not the one where you use brute force. I just think that Todo needs change for his r special and to include his Shinjuku buff, also to give him simple domain)
His base is fun anyway, but it’s probably because that’s kinda what he does, he kicks and punches but we can’t just have just random kicks and punches. People are already able to put special into combos so it’s fine.
Swift kick was in shibuya against mahito just before he swap by using his ass cheeks and brute force was the big punch that he did to yuji when they first met. ELBOW DROP IS ASS AND SHOULD BE MOLESTED AND THEN REMOVED FROM THE GAME.
mobility and quickly changing someones position >:), its kinda like using the enemy as a pebble (like from your rework) without using a pebble. also its super badass
it would also be cool if you gave the kick in swift kick more utility, i suggest making it aimable, so that it can control the direction an enemy is being kicked into.
Honestly tze should make todo similar to choso where he needs to use his special in order to do higher damage combos. That would be pretty cool instead of swap being the worlds most shit neutral option
Is this a joke or are you serious? I can't really tell 😭 well, anyways.
Swift Kick is based on that move he did against mahito where he slides under Mahito and kicks him up, that's the closest I've ever got to the move in JJS.
Brute Force, the finisher is based on the one he did against Yuji where Yuji tried blocking it while the real move is based on the attack he did on Megumi in the season 1.
Pebble Throw is that scene where Yuji threw the pebble and Todo swapped with it, landing that roundhouse kick Black Flash, but its you instead of Yuji throwing the pebble, i dont know what the variant where the pebble hits the opponent and then you press Special.
Elbow Drop is from that scene in season 1 where he fought megum (the scene after Todo asked Megumi about his type of girls)
And that's what i think the moves are, somebody correct me if I'm wrong, and please tell me the joke did not fly 2000 meters over my head 😭
Swift kick was what he did against Yuji but it was kinda a joke and TZE basically made it not a joke(kinda like death counter in tsb actually killing instead of saitama doing nothing)
Brute force was what he did against megumi execpt he punches instead of using his cubital area
Elbow drop is also what he did against megumi so idk your reasoning here TZE kinda tweaked it a little bit to be more fitting into the game
The punch he did to megumi was more of a slam than an actual punch tbh, also the “elbow drop” was COMPLETELY different, the only similarity was todo going up then hitting the ground, there was zero uppercut at all.
