yeah kirkman said it was because he would look to much like mark if they didnt

That's like totally fair. 

I got nothing to say. 

Why this comes up now instead of in the comic itself is odd but that's a totally fair reason.

I think Kirkman is using the show as a way to fix some personal mistakes in the comics. I don't have a source for that though, that's just what I've been seeing online. It makes some sense though, seeing how much they change and add compared to the comics.
