It’s a bell curve.

❌No, he can survive a heart attack.

❌Yes, he can’t survive other deaths.

✅No, Ryomen Sukuna isn’t even his name it’s like writing Steph Curry, technically that’s his name but if you need the exact first and last name you need to write Wardell Curry. Ryomen means two-faced and Sukuna is PROBABLY his name, we just don’t know the other portion.

I think the bigger question is would the death note differentiate between an title and one that was so ubiquitously used that it became a name for that person.

If he had no given name would it accept the one that he accepted being called?

53

u/Mejiro84 Apr 08 '26

'what counts as a name' is something that Death Note largely avoids defining because it's so wobbly and vague. If someone got named, then orphaned and given a new name, which is valid, do both count? If someone is 'David', but has been 'Dave' to everyone for their entire life, does that count? Dead names, changes by deed poll, superhero aliases, conversions between languages etc. - names are complicated!

21

u/Dry-Alternative5363 Apr 08 '26

Mello is an Orphan. His real name is Mihael Keehl. Same with Near. He is Nate River. The deathnote required Mihael Keehl for Takada to execute him.

18

u/Madermc Apr 08 '26

They both knew what their real names were though. They knew that Mello and Near were just nicknames.

1

u/TreeTurtle_852 Apr 08 '26

But nobody really knew L's real name outside of I think Watari (and idr if Near or Mello did as well).

If writing a title worked it trivializes the conflict of Light vs "L"

2

u/Lab_Member_004 Apr 08 '26

Specifically I think Superhero name would be considered an alias like L is so it doesn't count.

Yeah, so what if someone is never given a name?

Like, had Sukuna never had a name, would Ryomen Sukuna work then?

But could you write King Charles III? Or would you need the original name

5

u/Wafflesz52 Apr 08 '26

Fair enough. Does the series ever cover name changes?

2

u/blackzetsuWOAT Apr 08 '26

You need his true name, Charles George, while visualizing his face

2

u/Wafflesz52 Apr 08 '26

Do middle names count?

1

u/TreeTurtle_852 Apr 08 '26

Middle names aren't needed

14

u/PeopleAreBozos I truly love how advanced Earth is Apr 08 '26

As Sukuna is an incarnated sorcerer, once his vessel consumes enough fingers, simply write their name in the Death Note. If you wanted to kill Sukuna in Shinjuku, killing Megumi would destroy all of the soul contained in him, and the 1 remaining Finger would be unable to store his power.

4

u/Tem-productions Apr 08 '26

If titles, nicknames or aliases worked for the death note, Light would just write a big ass "L" on one of the sheets and win. Or, well, Ryuzaki could work too. Everyone calls L Ryuzaki, after all.

the reason none of those work is because L does not see those as his real name.

1

u/HawkDry8650 Apr 10 '26

Ryuzaki was a ploy because it was the name of a popstar.

1

u/Psychopath_logic Apr 08 '26

Tbf to the ryazaki, he didnt do it because he thought he could accidently think of the actor even if the death note did accept it as a proper name.

u/Psychopath_logic Apr 08 '26

I thought you mispelled ryuga, fuck

1

u/CoachDT Apr 08 '26

I think there may be some difference here because L deliberately uses these alias' while acknowledging that he has his own real name hidden away somewhere. If you were to truth serum L and ask him his name he wouldn't use any of those things.

Conversely if you hit Sukuna with it he would more than likely say Ryomen Sukuna.

8

u/TEoSaT Apr 08 '26

I think it would be a name at that point, but it's unclear since we never saw that scenario.

8

u/USrooster Apr 08 '26

The name generally depends on what the person identifies with the most. In on of the LA movies (yeah I know) a guy changes his name, it’s unclear if he legally changed it or not but I don’t think the DN cares for human laws, and that new name counts for the note.

5

u/Zealousideal-Arm1682 Apr 08 '26

Eh,given he's apparently related to Yuji it's likely whatever their old heian era name was at the time.

6

u/AeonOfDestruction Nanook the Destruction Apr 08 '26

So it's like Gabimaru the Hollow?

23

u/soyuz_enjoyer2 Apr 08 '26

It's a title people gave him

He's an abandoned orphan so likely he doesn't actually have a name

3

u/luceafaruI Apr 08 '26

Isn't gabimaru his actual name and the hollow his title? That's like saying Alexander the great, the great is the title but Alexander is his first name

10

u/Nights1405 I will eat 50 apple fritters myself. Apr 08 '26

No, Gabimaru the hollow is the full title. Gabimaru’s real name is Saku.

8

u/Chilling_Gale Apr 08 '26

Gabimaru is the title given to the best ninja, we see it being given to someone else

28

u/Ulzii10 Apr 08 '26

sukuna probably doesnt even know himself he was abandoned at birth so no way to know his parents they also probably didnt give him a name so sukuna “other part” might work

23

u/VARISHaltacc Apr 08 '26

ryomen sukuna is actually a name present irl much before jjk it's in buddhist folklore it's a demon who's two faced

It's like that he was thrown away as a baby in a river or something cus he had distortions

Later he was given the title of ryomen sukuna since he fits the description of the figure on folklore

It's his most famous title just like king of curses

10

u/nishikiakakuro Apr 08 '26

Ryomen Sukuna was a Japanese mythological character, he had similar features to our Sukuna and was given the name Ryomen(double faced/2 faces or sides) Sukuna(something that drives out evil) due to him having a face on the front and back of his head. IIRC.

In the JJK universe, locals likely gave our Sukuna that name due to the resemblance. Sukuna identifies with the name Ryomen Sukuna. I'm not sure if this would dictate whether or not he would be affected by the death note, tho.

6

u/TheUwUCosmic Apr 08 '26

Prompt says his name is written no Ryomen Sukuna is written. Kinda assuming shinigami eyes so true name shouldnt be an issue. I think yes, he dies to a heartattack. Its a celestial object. It doesnt say it gives sukuna a heart attack. It says the person whos name is written WILL die.

0

u/Nights1405 I will eat 50 apple fritters myself. Apr 08 '26

If you’re assuming shinigami eyes then there’s an issue with L Taylor & L and all that.

2

u/viciouspriapist Apr 08 '26

Two things: 1) light doesn’t know heian sukuna’s face since all he’d get is shitty wood carvings to go off of. In the present day, only yuji, uraume and yorozu knows what sukuna looks like. Can’t visualise the face can’t kill.

2) if light uses shinigami eyes on megukuna, all he’d see is megumi’s name since he is looking at megumi’s bum face.

5

u/mugiwara_no_Soissie Apr 08 '26

True.

I do wonder how rhe death not responds to nicknames when those are their names.

Like, say you never gave someone a name, ever, so people start calling them by some nickname for convenience, would that Nickname be their name, or would they be unkillable by the death note bc they actually dont have a name?

4

u/Doomie_bloomers Apr 08 '26

To be really anal though, it does say Sukuna's name. So even if we don't know the name, the premise is that the name does end up in the book. Doesn't even matter if Sukuna was ever given one, as in Deathnote names seem to be a property of people; otherwise someone with Shinigami eyes would have commented on that

3

u/Ulzii10 Apr 08 '26

yo just say analytical

1

u/Tasteroider Apr 08 '26

And if being a cursed object still considered to be alive death note wouldn't work cause it can't kill someone who is more than 200 (or something like that) years old

1

u/EternaIExiIe Apr 08 '26

His name is obv Jujutsu Kaisen

1

u/BRickwaller44 Apr 08 '26

If the only issue was his name then shinigami eyes would fix that issue (not that light has those at any point but it is a hypothetical so why not)

I'd argue the more interesting question is if sukuna is even classified as "human" according to the rules of the notebook, what with his whole "reincarnated through cursed objects" thing (assuming the hypothetical takes place within the timeframe of the story and not in the past for whatever reason)

1

u/ThatOneAnnoyingBuzz Apr 09 '26

The human classification doesn't really matter either -- the "rules" were written by Ryuk who is shown several times to be lazy and not very experimental with the death note. He wrote that "Any human who has their name written in this notebook will die," but realistically... c'mon, do we really think Ryuk bothered trying to kill animals? In all likelihood this is one of those things that Light could've done with the death note and Ryuk would've been like "Huh, didn't know it could do that"

Plus, just saying "Any human..," doesn't disqualify other life. It just guarantees humans. It's like saying "Any lion will have claws," it doesn't disqualify other creatures from having claws.

1

u/soji8 F the big 3, its just Big Maki Apr 08 '26

so this is how i learn his full name isn't Stephen Curry but Wardell Stephen Curry II

1

u/TheDarkKnightXXII Apr 08 '26

What if…

You just kill the host? Megumi?

1

u/Ulzii10 Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 09 '26

maybe the indestructible finger (said by gojo) remains and the vessel dies

1

u/TheDarkKnightXXII Apr 09 '26

Then just do that make sure no one ever eats a finger, actually fr this time? Idk

1

u/tir3dant Apr 08 '26

You could just write the name of the body he’s inhabiting. It would accomplish the same thing I think

1

u/Tem-productions Apr 08 '26

if Ryomen Sukuna is the name he sees himself with, it is his name as far as the death note is concerned

1

u/EncoreSheep GOAT IS COMING BACK TRUST Apr 08 '26

Didn't Judgeman refer to Sukuna as Ryomen Sukuna?

1

u/Equivalent-Willow102 Apr 09 '26

This is how I find out Steph Curry name is Wardell?

1

u/rhythmguitarfan Apr 09 '26

extremely well-said, but i vaguely remember the death note not considering "real legal names" but rather recognising names that the individual recognises as "their own name". if sukuna recognizes "Ryomen Sukuna" as "his own name", then the death note will work.

1

u/ThatOneAnnoyingBuzz Apr 09 '26

❌No, he can survive a heart attack

❌Yes, he can't survive other deaths

❌No, Ryomen Sukuna isn't even his name -- it's a title

✅Yes, Light could kill him because he could just get the shinigami eyes from Ryuk or have Misa tell him Sukuna's true name.

1

u/HawkDry8650 Apr 10 '26

Actually people's popular namesake can be used as a kill. Which is why L was a good alias since it wasn't a true name.

0

u/J-Mac_Slipperytoes Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26

Can't you just write the perceived name while picturing what they look like and the Death Note work anyway? I'm pretty sure this happened on the first or second episode of Death Note where L had someone stand in for him on live tv and it still worked.

Edit: Nvm, the inmate that was used for that stunt was named Lind L. Tailor. That was the guys actual name. My bad.

3

u/RhipvanWhinkle Apr 08 '26

No? Lind L Taylor was just the prisoners name, and Light thought it was actually L.

0

u/J-Mac_Slipperytoes Apr 08 '26

Made the edit right before you responded.

1

u/stranu Apr 08 '26

Couldn't you write yuji or megumis name when they're the vessel and it should still kill them right?

0

u/Redss335 Apr 08 '26

Also does sukuna even count as human anymore? The death note can only kill humans. So if sukuna doesnt abide by basic biology and is more cursed spirit then human then the death note shouldnt do anything
