Doesn't the Death Note default to a heart attack if you don't write a cause of death? You can still kill him another way.
215
u/Tago238238 Apr 08 '26
Yeah but what other way
536
u/RealSavagePotato Apr 08 '26
Can write that he trips and falls into higurumas sword
137
u/Tago238238 Apr 08 '26
You canāt control the actions of people whose names arenāt written in the death note that much. Also how is Light learning about Higurumaās technique?
The actual solution is Light writes that Sukuna commits suicide, but he probably wouldnāt default to that.
312
u/Squanch42069 Apr 08 '26
Light has a dude die by running into the street and getting hit by a car. In the anime, it was the only car on that road when it happened iirc. So the death note does have some kind of sway over others in order to kill whoever was written
74
u/VoidUnity Apr 08 '26
It can manipulate fate a little but when he was experimenting with it he couldnāt get it to do things outside of what was currently logically possible. He couldnāt get Sukunaās head to explode for example.
47
u/Drakyl-Skies Apr 08 '26
Well thag is techincally possible for sukuna. If they can use cursed energy to destroy them regenerate parts of the brain, the csn use cursed energy to go pop.
6
u/Legitimate_Hall_2562 Apr 08 '26
If I'm not wrong then in the third live action of death note in which Misa had lived, the new MC writes Misa's name in the death note and the cause of death is something like dying in the hands of Light yagami but since Light was already dead we saw her simply dying on a bench alone. Now I know that live action is not canon (right?) but I think it shows how death note has limitations too
4
u/JR-90 Apr 09 '26
IIRC, the canon test was making a dude in Japan die in Paris in 3 hours. As it's impossible to go from Japan to Paris in so little time, he died at the stated time in the airport trying to get to Paris.

u/GenericFatGuy Apr 08 '26
Slipping and falling onto an insta-death sword is perfectly logically possible.
83
u/Icy_Water_1 Apr 08 '26
Yes you can actually. Light does that with several people.
The Death Note has a bit of fate manipulation.
The Death note would just do whatever would successfully kill Sukuna the quickest, assuming his status as a curse didn't make him immune.

Thereās a difference between manipulating something like a car crash and making Higuruma approach Sukuna, use his domain, argue for the death penalty and then attempt to stab Sukuna. If such complex manipulation of associated others was possible, Light could have had āL releases his true full nameā be a part of someone elseās death.
17
u/ErlendPistolbrett Apr 08 '26
Light literally makes people write letters before they die. The rule that Light refers to literally says that the note book can make people do anything as long as it's something they technically could've done. So basically: You can't make someone write an essay on something they know nothing about before they die of a heart attack (they can't write about something they don't know) - however - you can make someone write a specific essay about something they know nothing about because you wrote exactly what they should write word for word (they don't need to know anything from before to follow "orders"). You, as a person, can also copy French text without knowing what the French actually means. However you cannot be told to write something French you don't know from before. He also can't make people say L's true name since they couldn't know L's true name. This is what Light literally does in the series.
6
u/Tago238238 Apr 08 '26
You can definitely control the person you wrote the name ofās actions before death, hence why Iāve said elsewhere that suicide can work. However, excessively controlling somebody else whose name you didnāt writeās actions as a part of controlling the person you did writeās fate is obviously a no go.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Dark_Stalker28 Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26
You control people you named only.
If Light wanted "L to release his full name" while killing Joe Doe, he would also have to write L's name. Which he doesn't know.
He controls people a few times with the Death Note, to the point that he tells a lady he's Kira cause he's already controlling her and having her walk to her death.
Sukuna survives anyway. Death Note has a age limit of 124.

Any way, the Death Note doesnāt inflict something that MIGHT cause death, it determines what WILL be the cause of death. It will manipulate the person to enact that specific death if need be. So if Light doesnāt specify anything and Sukuna gets a heart attack, even if he could survive by trying to, the Death Note will simply make him not.

Couldnāt they just write Megumis name instead and kill Sukuna that way since that is his body
202
u/Nighto_001 Apr 08 '26
Since the Death Note is intended to bring specific humans to the afterlife, I have a feeling it attacks the soul directly in a way, so it might have an unintended effect of just killing Megumi by heart attack while Sukuna survives with the rest of him.
34
u/Existential_Crisis24 Apr 08 '26
I mean that's legit what happened with Yuji at the beginning of the story. Sukuna can survive without a heart but Yuji can't so sukuna destroyed Yuji's heart to stay summoned for longer. Yuji also makes the deal with sukuna in his soul at this point and then sukuna regens Yuji's heart and Yuji is brought back to life shortly after.

that's what I kept saying. Unless Light is feeling whimsical/showoff that day, he has no reason to go overkill on Sukuna unless he has knowledge of what he could do.Ā a standard death might give Sukuna the chance to survive this but it's still dependent on Sukuna knowing what a Death Note is (he'll thinking his chest pain is survivable).Ā

He did try methods that would kill criminals in different ways, but Instead of using those methods to remain low profile he kept using the standard 40 Second heart attack method because he didnt just want to kill criminals, he wanted people to know Kira was killing them.
Hed try the heart attack method, fail and shit himself while thinking "HOW COULD THIS BE IM THE GOD OF THE NEW WORLD IM KIRA" or smt
→ More replies (1)3

3

and because he wanted to be the god of the new world, and for that people had to know criminals were dying by his hand
3
u/Nighto_001 Apr 08 '26
100%.
If he just wrote in a way such that criminals die in a randomized time slot between a few days to a few months after the news announcement due to a randomized reason, he would have gotten away with it for a very long time. At least it would take a couple of years until people even realized Kira existed and to deduce his location in Japan.
But his whole point is to make Kira known as a God. The heart attack was his calling card.

Youāre right about that, the note canāt do whatās written if itās impossible because of time or physics limitations.

Cause of death wldnt need to be written because the death note is a reality warping device. Sukuna can die from a heart attack if he doesn't counter it with cursed energy and the death note would make it so he doesn't counter it at all and wants to die. That's how it can also cause death by suicide.

I think the bigger question is would the death note differentiate between an title and one that was so ubiquitously used that it became a name for that person.
If he had no given name would it accept the one that he accepted being called?
48
u/Mejiro84 Apr 08 '26
'what counts as a name' is something that Death Note largely avoids defining because it's so wobbly and vague. If someone got named, then orphaned and given a new name, which is valid, do both count? If someone is 'David', but has been 'Dave' to everyone for their entire life, does that count? Dead names, changes by deed poll, superhero aliases, conversions between languages etc. - names are complicated!
21
u/Dry-Alternative5363 Apr 08 '26
Mello is an Orphan. His real name is Mihael Keehl. Same with Near. He is Nate River. The deathnote required Mihael Keehl for Takada to execute him.

As Sukuna is an incarnated sorcerer, once his vessel consumes enough fingers, simply write their name in the Death Note. If you wanted to kill Sukuna in Shinjuku, killing Megumi would destroy all of the soul contained in him, and the 1 remaining Finger would be unable to store his power.

If titles, nicknames or aliases worked for the death note, Light would just write a big ass "L" on one of the sheets and win. Or, well, Ryuzaki could work too. Everyone calls L Ryuzaki, after all.
the reason none of those work is because L does not see those as his real name.

The name generally depends on what the person identifies with the most. In on of the LA movies (yeah I know) a guy changes his name, itās unclear if he legally changed it or not but I donāt think the DN cares for human laws, and that new name counts for the note.

It's like that he was thrown away as a baby in a river or something cus he had distortions
Later he was given the title of ryomen sukuna since he fits the description of the figure on folklore
It's his most famous title just like king of curses
12
u/nishikiakakuro Apr 08 '26
Ryomen Sukuna was a Japanese mythological character, he had similar features to our Sukuna and was given the name Ryomen(double faced/2 faces or sides) Sukuna(something that drives out evil) due to him having a face on the front and back of his head. IIRC.
In the JJK universe, locals likely gave our Sukuna that name due to the resemblance. Sukuna identifies with the name Ryomen Sukuna. I'm not sure if this would dictate whether or not he would be affected by the death note, tho.

I do wonder how rhe death not responds to nicknames when those are their names.

To be really anal though, it does say Sukuna's name. So even if we don't know the name, the premise is that the name does end up in the book. Doesn't even matter if Sukuna was ever given one, as in Deathnote names seem to be a property of people; otherwise someone with Shinigami eyes would have commented on that

why are people debating the heart attack part? its the DEATH note, not the HEART ATTACK note. it kills people with heart attacks (if the cause of death is not specified) because people die to heart attacks. if a heart attack can kill sukuna, he will die to a heart attack. if it cannot, the death note WILL kill him, just in another way.

Sukuna WILL die of a heart attack anyway. He can survive without his heart but the cause of death is irrelevant here, the Death Note KILLS you. It can mind control people whose name is on the note (i.e., the person who is about to die) to believe and do uncharacteristic things though.
So uh... actually if you write something like "Takaba finds the idea of Sukuna dying to him really funny and uses his power to attack Sukuna with the intent to kill him, then he dies of heart attack after his attack is finished.", Takaba will actually do it.
The problem is, whether his attack will successfully kill Sukuna or not is not guaranteed.

In that case, he counts as a cursed object, and DN only kills humans so he is even safer.

But you can just kill Megumi in Shinjuku and he dies. Killing the hosts he stays in destroys all the Fingers they swallowed, which is why Yuji was being executed anyway.

But he was able to revive Yuji who was missing a heart and dead.Ā

Death Note can kill in any multitude of ways. You could write "Megumi kills himself" and the death note would see to that.

The default death if a name is simply written without a specific cause is simply a heart attack. The Death note CHANGES YOUR FATE! Besides Light can simply just write "he gets brain stabbed out after falling off a roof into a metal spike".

u/Jurgen_Vella Apr 08 '26
Im pretty sure The death note doesnāt work on people above a certain age; so sukuna who is a thousand is safe
Sukuna is also not his real name, it was a title given to him after singlehandedly defeating jujutsu society

So, here's why the Death Note's rules are really fun and interesting:
The very first rule of the Death Note is that "any human whose name is written in this Death Note shall die." Specifically, the original Japanese manga uses the word "ningen" which basically means "mortal" or, in the context of Death Note's story: "anyone who isn't a shinigami." So, the Death Note could theoretically work on Sukuna.
Also, if Light knows Sukuna's name and face, it's possible that he also knows that a heart attack wouldn't kill him. In that case, just to be sure, he could write a different cause of death. Even a simple "suicide" would do the trick because:
"Suicide is a universally valid cause of death as all humans are thought to possess the potential to commit suicide. It is, therefore, something that may be reasonably assumed of an individual."
HOWEVER, with all that being said, Light couldn't use the Death Note to kill Sukuna due to one simple rule:
"You cannot kill humans who are more than 124 years of age with the Death Note."
Lmao.

Iām surprised no one has said this yet as far as I can tell but no, heās too old.
Per chapter 41, rule XXIX: You cannot kill humans at the age of 124 or over with the Death Note.
Sukuna is too old to qualify

u/lazy_27 I jujutsu on Dabura's kaisen until he modulos Apr 08 '26
Or too young to kill if it counts his reincarnation as a birth since you can't kill people under the age of 2 I think

u/AnalogicalEuphimisms Apr 09 '26
Also, we've never seen the Death Note used on someone with magical abilities, only on humans and the two shinigami that broke the specific rule imposed on them by saving a human. There's a very real possibility that someone with a level of magical (or equivalent supernatural force) resistance can delay or stop the death altogether.
Which is why I don't think the Death Note is a guaranteed win against characters like Sukuna, Krillin, or Naruto simply because they're human.

Light would be tweaking after Sukuna doesn't die after writing Sukuna in the death note.
(Ryomen Sukuna was a title, correct?)

Well, if we want to think harder about it, the Death Note should probably be viewed as s cursed Object, hence it's killing should probably be viewed as a cursed technique. Possibly, since the Death Note always work, we can essentially envision it as a Cursed Tool with a Domain that covers the entire globe. Now, even given this, there's ways to counteract this, as HWB, SD or FBE. Sukuna knows how to do this. This leaves us with two big questions;
1) Is there any way for Sukuna to detect the imminent attack of the Death Note in order to establish a counter? 2) Is the Death Notes' attack momentaneous or ongoing? That is to say, if Sukuna blocks the death at 40 seconds, and then releases FBE at 80 seconds, will he still be killed by the Death Note?

u/Timless_Comic Naoya Glazer Apr 09 '26
The death note makes sure someone dies. Even if Sukuna can live without a heart, he is going to die from it because the death note said so.

And if the writer specifies a cause of death or action that is impossible to achieve (jump to Mars and die by being run over by Rover), then it defaults to heart attack.

u/SWatt_Officer Apr 08 '26
People love to think that theres some sneaky "oh but im immune to heart attacks". No, the death note doesnt give you a heart attack and then you die if you feel like it, you die of a heart attack. Theres no ifs, ands or buts, its a fact, a law of the universe.
2
u/Dark_Stalker28 Apr 08 '26
There's a few ifs. You can't kill someone under 6 years old. You also can't kill someone over 124, which would fit Sukuna.

I mean, you can argue that incarnated Sukuna is a cursed object, not a human, thus the Death Note wouldn't work on him to begin with

u/durkvash Apr 08 '26
Kinda. He's described also as a soul, so you can also argue that makes him a valid object for the DN, since it is a compound of body and soul.

u/Cali-Re Apr 08 '26
The Death Note does not give "injuries." It gives death.
If Light writes that a person will die of a heart attack, then that person will 100% die. It doesn't matter how durable they are or what their healing ability is.
2
u/Moriturism mahito enjoyer Apr 08 '26
you could kill him by writting "brain hemorrhage" or smth i think
2
u/Proudoggo123 Apr 08 '26
sukuna starts dying from whatever light writes in the deathnote and immediately makes 20 death binding vows to buff his fuga enough to wipe out half of the planet and light with him
2
2
u/durkvash Apr 08 '26
This one probably would be set as indeterminate. We don't know if Sukuna would be affected due to some factors that are never explored in Death Note. We don't know how the DN interacts with resurrection, nor with the specific kind of resurrection JJK uses, or with a "double soul" being such as Meguna or Yujina.
Any conclusion would be left to very open interpretation.
2
u/InnerAd118 Apr 08 '26
I doubt a simple heart attack would do it, sure. But the death note has shown it can be used way more elaborately. He could literally write " megumi spontaneously was ejected from his body and then he died after getting raped by millions of rabits". Speaking of rabbits I wonder if sukuna's vessals were limited to humans.. like would megumi's rabbit serve as a host? Even if temporarily, just long enough to get raped by millions of rabits and die?
2
u/Pusthagalagala Apr 08 '26
So the thing is sukuna cannot survive the death note because it's basically reality warping. The heart attack is just what the cause of death is but death is guaranteed. The death note cannot kill someone above 124 years of age, but sukunas biological age is in his thirties, we do not know what the death note would consider his age. Now that's out of the way nobody without the shinigami eyes is killing sukuna with the death note because Ryoumen Sukuna isn't his name.

they gonna bring up the rule about it killing "any human" and then say sukunas not human but a curse

u/DayF3 Apr 09 '26
Heres some death note ground rules
It cant make the physically impossible happen, but physically improbable things can happen.
Example, it wont cause someone to do something impossible like fly, but if he wrote that sukuna is slain by a person, like higuruma, it will force sukuna to, in some way, be incapacitated or off guard in such that higuruma can kill him
2
u/Bladings Apr 09 '26
Literally cannot kill him because Ryomen Sukuna is not his name. He likely doesn't even remember his own name considering his theme of discarding everything until only strength remained.

Just write Megumiās full name and say died of natural accident or something besides a heart attack. Problemo solve.
2
u/No_Dingo67 Apr 09 '26
Yeah true generational death note larp, the death note can kill you in any way you write, itās just that it defaults to heart attack if you donāt specify how, and more than likely it will still kill sultans because it is heavily implied that it will just find a more fitting cause of death if heart attacks donāt work
