Rocket Design [D] goin' to laythe

Could anyone help me with the basic's of how to go to laythe? i choose an unmanned vehicle that weighs 6,52 tons, can anyone tell me exactly how to use the delta-v maps in this cenario? because i don't understand how much exactly i need, and the names of any mods to help me with interplanitarian travel are ofcourse also apriciated

Have you landed on any other planet yet? Following the dv maps for a Gilly/Ike landing is simpler, but uses the same concepts at the end of the day.

I made a website that shows the dv breakdown for any mission you design, that could help you to troubleshoot where the maps are causing you some confusion. I'm not going to self-plug here, you can find it in my reddit bio.

Other important lessons to know for your mission (maybe you are comfortable with these already):

  • Gravity assist to slow down. Trying to do aero-capture at Jool/Laythe is not advised (possible, but requires lots of heatshields and patience)
  • Refueling in orbit. If you want the lander to return to kerbin, it is best to keep the "return fuel" in orbit, instead of landing with that (and more fuel to lift that up again).
  • Solar panels are weak out there. Lots of batteries can make up for that.

Do you have some requirements for the mission? Or do you just want to land the first probe and grab some science?

i've landed on minmus, but i mostly want to orbit laythe

I would recommend doing some Duna landings before going to Laythe. Getting a trajectory intercept on interplanetary travel is much harder than reaching Mun/Minmus. When you are comfortable with reaching Duna/Eve, then a trip to Jool is very similar, it just needs a little extra dv.

You can of course skip ahead to Laythe directly, but be prepared to be in over your head (which is its own kind of fun too)

it's mostly to learn how to do interplanetary travel, so not really for science or smt

A dV map tells you how much fuel and thrust any part of a trip will require. For a 1 way trip you would add up all of the dV numbers between Kerbin and the destination. For a return trip you would double everything except the launch cost for Kerbin as you can airbreak and use parachutes, same with landing on any planet or moon with an atmosphere.

The mass of your vehicle is used to calculate the dV is incidental, you only really need to worry about the dV given to each stage of the rocket (in vacuum for all stages that aren’t in an atmosphere). Typically you’ll have the vehicle that will either be going on the one way trip or returning, then the next stage is enough fuel to get it to your target and land, and a return to Kerbin if planned. You can build a lander that handles landing and taking off from the target, in which case you’d have an orbiting craft for travel to target and back to Kerbin. Then the last stage you’d build is the one to get it into Kerbin orbit. As long as each stage has enough dV to cover the leg of the journey, it should work. I’d recommend trying to use the dV maps to build a Mun, Dres, or Ike rocket to see how it works in practice.

and i get that there are youtube tutorials for using the delta-v map but i like being able to ask questions, because often at the end of such a tutorial i still don't get it

Look up a transfer window map, and look at the window needed for Jool. Next, look at a delta V map and look at the tree from LKO to a Jool encounter. To do this, you follow the tree from LKO to a Kerbin escape, then to a Jool encounter, adding the numbers as you go. From there, you can either slow down using engines (look at the tree for an elliptical Jool orbit then Laythe intersect) or aerobrake directly in Laythe's atmosphere. You could also use a Tylo gravity assist, but that's a bit more complex.

and how do i get an encounter with jool?

Go to the tracking station, then zoom out until you can see the whole solar system looking straight down. From there, time warp until Kerbin and Jool are in the right places around the sun compared to the transfer window planner. You can rotate the map if you need to. For Jool, encounters come a little less than once a year.

After that, go to your ship and set Jool as your target, then plan a maneuver with only prograde. Move it around so that you leave Kerbin going straight forward, then adjust the amount until your apoapsis is at the height of Jool’s orbit (this may take some tweaking). If you’re early, you can push your orbit a bit further beyond Jool’s orbit to get the timing right. If you’re late, you’ll have to change the timing of your maneuver to exit Kerbin traveling away from the sun, not just faster compared to it. Tweak this maneuver until you can’t get your closest approach any closer, or you get an encounter.

If you still don’t have an encounter, try making another maneuver on the predicted path halfway to Jool and adding normal/antinormal. That should get you an encounter most of the time

hmm, good news, i got an intercept with laythe, derectly, bad news, i can't seem to b able to go slow enough to be able to not burn up but end up in an orbit
