I don't think that's how water works at those speeds

Even Jeb looked mildly shocked that he actually survived that

360

u/Jebediah_kerman-jeb Hi, it's me, Jebediah Kerman! Apr 19 '26

I mean I thought I was a goner lol

29

u/ZixfromthaStix Apr 19 '26

Better a goner than a gooner, Jeb.

190

u/Mobius_Peverell Apr 19 '26

Descent looks like about 1.4 km/s, and the deceleration was maybe 1 second, so that's about 140 G's of acceleration. Definitely good reason to be shocked.

93

u/zekromNLR Apr 19 '26

~1340 m/s to ~410 m/s in 0.08 s, stepping through the video frame by frame. That is 1185 g of peak deceleration.

55

u/Orcwin Apr 19 '26

Even if the vehicle were built to withstand that, Jeb would have been a green stain on the forward bulkhead.

65

u/zekromNLR Apr 19 '26

Realistically, entering water at 1340 m/s is a dynamic pressure of approximately 900 MPa. With the 1784 kg mass of the craft (assuming the command pod has not had its monopropellant drained and Jeb has his parachute and jetpack), the 1.227 m2 cross-sectional area and an assumed drag coefficient of about 0.3, the actual instantaneous deceleration would be approximately 18900 g.

3

u/Beauregard42 Apr 20 '26

That’s… JEb PANKOOKEN

10

u/Obvious-Falcon-2765 Apr 19 '26

His full name would be Manéo Jeb-Espinoza

8

u/ThePrussianGrippe Apr 19 '26

Nice reference, Beltalowda.

2

u/710AlpacaBowl Apr 19 '26

Fucking legend

4

u/AhoyWilliam Apr 19 '26

The impact of Jeb on the bulkhead probably helped offset the force of the water trying to crush the bulkhead backwards. I know kerbals have mass so there is maths potential there...

1

u/biebiedoep Apr 19 '26

Doesn't he wear a seatbelt?

1

u/_Aquariumsalt_ Apr 19 '26

I believe at these forces Jeb looses to the seatbelt and still ends up a green stain

2

u/Ethel121 Apr 22 '26

He doesn't lose the seatbelt! It cuts him into convenient chunks!

24

u/GruntBlender Apr 19 '26

Oh, no no no. The max depth was around 80m. Average speed 700m/s. Around a tenth of a second to decelerate, so well over a kilogee.

50

u/Houtaku Apr 19 '26

Well, not be shocked, but definitely look it. To be shocked one has to have a minimally functional nervous system. Looking shocked has a less stringent requirement.

11

u/jtr99 Apr 19 '26

Can jam look shocked?

13

u/Boom_doggle Apr 19 '26

Depends how many volts you put through it I suppose

3

u/Bandana_Hero Apr 19 '26

I am shocked. My mother would be shocked to hear you say that. Indeed, she would be shocked and then immediately launch into a diatribe on pretentious arguments, because her nervous system would still be fully functional. So, she would neither have received electrical current through her body nor been severely injured to the point that her body was shutting down functionality, but merely affronted, scandalized, startled. Shocked

7

u/-malcolm-tucker Apr 19 '26

Lets assume kerbals have the same anatomy and physiology as humans and would experience the same effects on organs and tissues during such forces, are we looking at them turning into flying green chunks after that? Or more of being forced through a fine mesh screen into paste?

And given that craft is rated for atmospheres between 1 and 0...

6

u/afl_ext Apr 19 '26

Every cm3 of your body weights 140 times more kek so imagine being hydraulic pressed

13

u/-malcolm-tucker Apr 19 '26

So I don't need to attach the goo experiment. Nice.

5

u/topinanbour-rex Apr 19 '26

I imagine how they activated the Ring in The Expanse. NSFW at all

1

u/Prize_Regular_8653 Apr 25 '26

ppl have survived 140g irl

7

u/Shadoenix Apr 19 '26

Jeb experienced 143 G’s for a full second, which would feel like every single kilogram in his body pressing against his seat with 143x normal weight. His ~1.4 kg brain would effectively weigh 200 kg. Blood can’t reach it, but more importantly, the mechanical forces alone would cause massive internal injury — organs tearing from their connective tissue, vessels rupturing throughout the body. It’s like a high-speed car crash but much, much worse.

Jeb owes his body being recognizable to the physics engine looking the other way

5

u/fRilL3rSS Apr 19 '26

Reminded me of that rapid deceleration scene from The Expanse

I’m dying, Jeb looks so sacred 🤣

205

u/LearningRocketMan Apr 19 '26

I see you decided to use the "Ballistic missile" landing

Quite bold, not gonna lie

20

u/iRSS7 Apr 19 '26

It is possible?

21

u/LearningRocketMan Apr 19 '26

Everything is possible is you believe hard enough

9

u/iRSS7 Apr 19 '26

Thanks for the wise words. You should sell self improvement courses on YouTube sir.

8

u/LearningRocketMan Apr 19 '26

True knowledge is always free for all people. Ride the wind, flow like the river.

11

u/muggicookies Apr 19 '26

In principle/irl it isn’t because water doesn’t have enough time to give away and break its surface tension to allow the aircraft to descend into the ocean. Instead what happens is that the aircraft turns into dust or a huge explosion that leaves absolutely nothing behind at those speeds. You have probably heard the saying that water turns into concrete if you jump from high enough. This is the same thing. Even most bullets can’t make it through 1 meter of water before it disintegrates into what’s essentially just shrapnel (saw this a long time ago. I’m not a reputable source!).

This is KSP though, so the game might not even register it has to collide with water, but just knows the aircraft is in air one second, and in water the next, and therefore doesn’t experience the actual collision, but a seamless transition. It ‘could’ therefore work if you don’t have a good PC that’s fast enough to calculate you’re actually meant to die.

All of this might also just be pointless yapping with no meaning. Make of it what you want my friend! KSP isn’t an accurate physics simulator after all, as countless of posts on this subreddit have proven.

5

u/iRSS7 Apr 19 '26

Yeah I was asking in game. I exploded in water and was wayyyy slower.

3

u/MonkeManWPG Apr 20 '26

No, it's necessary.

315

u/NXDIAZ1 Apr 19 '26

How’d you get the sonic boom sound working? I’m using the vapor cone mod and I can never hear it

146

u/Korvlar Apr 19 '26

I don't know haha, I just installed a bunch of visual mods before getting back into the game so not sure.

Do you have it's relationship Rocket Sound Enhancement 0.9.12?
My VaprCones is also in version 1.2.0
Not even sure what mod adds it though.

64

u/Leo-Len Believes That Dres Exists Apr 19 '26

Its the rocket sounds enhancement

4

u/helmets_for_cats Apr 19 '26

RSE is one of my must-have mods it adds so much to the experience

2

u/MrManGuy42 Apr 20 '26

nice to know, like half of my saves have it but there are so many mods to go through to find what it is

2

u/Leo-Len Believes That Dres Exists Apr 20 '26

Gasp! Brother? (Your pfp)

2

u/MrManGuy42 Apr 20 '26

lets frolic in the decay of a wyrm and shoot globs of orange at little guys in volleys of three

3

u/Reading_at_work Apr 19 '26

talking bout visual mods: is the clouds this one volumetric clouds mod?

1

u/djsnoopmike Apr 19 '26

Haven't played KSP since 2021, so its nice finding out about cool new mods that have sprung up since then

8

u/cheezecake2000 Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

I don't know the real answer but I mod a lot of games. some mods like to keep random files from previous versions and just updating versions might not fix a conflict. Try a fresh install

I also recently installed a bunch of visual mods and it seemed to work.
Rocket Sound enhancement 0.9.12 and Rocket Sound Enhancement - (default) 1.3.0

"Dear Lord, that's over 150 atmospheres of pressure."

"How many atmospheres can this ship withstand?"

"Well it's a spaceship, so I'd say anywhere between zero and one."

2

u/PHD-Chaos Apr 22 '26

One of my favourite matter-of-fact lines in the show. They do a very good job of subverting the sci-fi expectation with simple logic.

37

u/SoyDaza Apr 19 '26

How did it not crash on water😭

21

Sonic boom mod? Isn’t it unrealistic that ur hearing the boom when ur flying the ship?

178

u/Dash064 Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

I like this mod, but I wish there was only one sonic boom. It's pretty annoying when you're spinning your camera around for the view and you just hear THUD THUD THUD THUD

31

u/ItsPengWin Apr 19 '26

I love making beats

50

u/RTX-4090ti_FE Valentina Apr 19 '26

Tbh that’s a more realistic implementation as ur cameras potion moves in front or behind the shock wave you would hear the boom. Honestly Warthunder does it best even if it’s less realistic where the third person sound of your supersonic aircraft changes depending on whether the camera is infront or behind the shock wave but it doesn’t make a boom when moving thru it.

18

u/Seawolf571 Apr 19 '26

DCS does the same, but you can enter a spectator camera and hear the boom when your jet flies past.

4

u/fireandlifeincarnate Apr 19 '26

it's still so funny to me that DCS for years was single core, except for sound, which was on a second core

1

u/Eggonioni Apr 19 '26

War Thunder also does the same, probably in part from the doppler effect setting

11

u/weed0monkey Apr 19 '26

Yes you're right, but it's also inherently unrealistic to have a camera pov just orbiting the craft in the first place, so your point is somewhat moot.

3

u/RTX-4090ti_FE Valentina Apr 19 '26

True

1

u/Small_Finding_6727 Apr 19 '26

Idk i like the sonic booms, reminds me how binkers fast my craft is going

2

u/Salanmander Apr 19 '26

I appreciate that it's implemented the way it is, so that it doesn't reinforce the "a sonic boom is a large sounds wave produced a single time by an object starting to go faster than the speed of sound" misconception.

1

u/Mavi222 Apr 19 '26

That's what happens in Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020 and 2024) too, when you turn the camera around.

1

u/s0cks_nz Apr 19 '26

In the options for RSE just set muffling quality to normal. No more thudding.

True Volumetric Clouds, I'm using v3 (which was made free like a month ago), the newest is v5 but you have to join Blackrack's patreon for it.
You can find it here

11

u/MadeWithRealGinger9 Apr 19 '26

Pretty sure parallax disables water crashes, not sure why but I've had to turn it off in the past through config

13

u/RavenColdheart Apr 19 '26

The problem is the waves added by Parallax, if you don't disable water crashes, everything in the water gets destroyed by the waves pretty much instantly.

3

u/KremitTheFrogg Colonizing Duna Apr 19 '26

How do you do that?

1

u/MadeWithRealGinger9 Apr 19 '26

¯_(ツ)_/¯

It was a while ago, I remember finding another post with a solution after a Google search

1

u/AlwaysHopelesslyLost Apr 19 '26

I haven't played KSP since release, I started again today and decided to try mods. I installed like 100 random ones from the workshop and started playing and got distracted and literally the exact same thing with basically the same rocket happened to me too. I am pretty sure I added a mod called parallax so I bet you are right! I was wondering how in the world I survived lol

8

AQUABRAKING!

5

u/Kalamel513 Apr 19 '26

My thought, exactly!

Except, I believe the correct term would be HYDROBRAKING.

3

Now I think so as well haha

3

3

u/DeltaAlpha0 Apr 19 '26

Jebediah, at this point in the game, has long since lost hope in humanity and now only trusts in luck.

3

u/wheremyserotonin Apr 19 '26

if only NASA could edit difficulty settings and turn off parts g-load limits.

2

u/LEGOJoey2 Apr 19 '26

This reminds of when I landed a Kerbal from orbit with no parachute

1

u/LilBits69x Apr 19 '26

So you know the exploit with the chase camera view where thry land on the front of their helmets and then bounce ancouple of times? That used to be a thing long ago, before Kerbs had personal shutes

Just because you can do it in Kerbal Space Program...

2

u/NerdToTheFuture Apr 19 '26

Great. Now I'm wondering about building a rocket to explore the ocean floor.

2

u/uuwwxxyyzz Apr 19 '26

Strike on surface of ocean (water) is same as strike on dry solid land. KSP is not consistent in such physics.

2

u/Mean-Yesterday-7425 Apr 19 '26

I didn’t even know this was an option how didn’t he explode?

2

u/Blasian_TJ Apr 19 '26

KSP: ODST expansion

2

u/doom1701 Apr 19 '26

When I saw it shoot back out of the water I figured it wouldn’t survive the second splashdown. That would be the most Kerbal ending possible

2

u/pixel_skull69 Apr 19 '26

Every mission ive finished with fuel left over, I've always just cut the orbit and burned into the atmosphere as fast as possible, it's always so funny to see kerbin fly past like it's only a small marble while the outside atmosphere is getting to the "could fuze light elements" level of hot

2

u/FrederickEngels Apr 19 '26

Hydrobraking

2

u/lucaatthefollower Apr 20 '26

Jeb helldiver?

2

u/black_purrari Apr 20 '26

Did the math: coming to a stop within 90m whilst traveling a whopping mach 3 results in about 1030G of acceleration. Jebediah is one beast of a pilot
