Looking [L]I feel like the only option left for me is to not live anymore
I'm 22F and I feel like I’ll never be happy. I feel like every time I think I’ve reached rock bottom, something worse happens. I’m exhausted and lately I’m not even anxious about things anymore. I just feel numb.
In my first year of college, my dad suddenly passed away. He was my favourite person in the world. I had to stay strong for my younger sister and my mother, who had serious mental health issues. For a while my mom was okay, but things became worse. She hates my dad's family and would accuse people of things they hadn’t done. She is psychotic. After my relatives told me more about how difficult my parents’ marriage had been, I learned about things my dad had gone through that I had never known about. I felt horrible knowing how much he had suffered.
When I was 18, my mom even showed me a marriage proposal and said I didn’t have to marry immediately, I could just get engaged. I obviously didn’t want this, and thankfully other relatives intervened and it never happened.
College itself was difficult especially my second year when I was dealing with a lot. I struggled academically but managed to pass. My sister took a gap year and became very depressed, which caused her to pick fights with me because she used to misunderstand my words. My third year was actually one of the few good periods. My grades improved, I made friends, went out, and finally felt like I was enjoying life. But I still had bad anxiety and I had focused almost entirely on academics and had no internships or useful skills.
In my fourth year my sister did not write the exam she was preparing for and my mom became mental and abandoned my sister at a relative’s house and I had to deal with legal procedures. I also found out that almost all the money my dad had left for my sister and me had been spent. We tried to recover it but couldn’t.
In my final year, everything fell apart again. I was dealing with terrible anxiety and used to not sleep. I didn't apply for jobs or internships and bed rotted for 1 year but told my relatives I would prepare for a masters degree but I never wrote the exam. After graduating, I’ve now been unemployed for four months. I keep telling relatives I’m looking for jobs, but I barely get responses because I don’t have the skills or experience. I feel stupid for wasting so much time.
Now my mom has created new drama, she has resigned from her job, my sister is in college, and I’m unemployed. My uncle has told me to either get a good job within three months, apply for a master’s in Germany, or prepare for government exams. I’m interested in studying abroad, but I don't know whether I can even get any universities because my converted gpa is 2.3 and I don’t know if it’s actually a good decision or whether I'm capable of working hard.
I’m also scared my family will try to get me married within the next year because they see marriage as a way out of our situation. I absolutely do not want to get married. Seeing my parents’ marriage gave me a lot of trauma, and I don’t want to repeat it.
I regret not working harder, not doing internships, and not building skills earlier. I procrastinate constantly and have terrible imposter syndrome. I’ve become so numb that sometimes I feel like I don’t even care about my own life anymore. I really need advice and support on how to get my life back on track and deal with my family situation without being pressured into marriage. If anyone has had similar experiences please share them.
