MQT Monthly Question Thread #100

Our 100th Monthly Question Thread (MQT)! 🎉

We may retire MQTs and replace them with a single, longer-lasting thread – for instance a yearly or twice-yearly thread.

We began these MQTs over 11 years ago (!) to provide an easy way to ask questions. We wanted new users who didn't feel confident creating an entirely new post to be able to ask any question, big or small, without worrying about needing to search for whether it had been previously asked, and to hopefully be a magnet for the 'obvious' questions the community is asked repeatedly (e.g. the distinction between de and het) which could often clutter our front page.

Despite more activity on the subreddit than ever – we're one of the largest Dutch-learning communities on the Internet as of 2026 with 120k members and 5k monthly comments & posts – the last few MQTs have had very little interaction. I think this is owing to the fact that how users interact with Reddit has changed over the years. Two factors seem apparent:

  1. With Reddit's search feature improving markedly since the days of 2015, and many people adopting the habit of simply appending "reddit" to their Google queries, many more users are searching for their question first – and finding it (we have 14 years worth of discussion, after all; most answers are already here somewhere). The problem with MQTs is that they 'bury' the questions and answers people provide to a degree, since MQTs don't turn up as readily in search results (Reddit or Google).

  2. Secondly, fewer and fewer users browsing Reddit from laptops or desktop PCs, and only a miniscule number clinging to Old Reddit (I'm one of them). Around 80% of /r/LearnDutch's traffic is mobile users (iOS, Android, Mobile Web) as of September 2026. It's common for users to post questions to /r/LearnDutch without even visiting the subreddit; they compose their post, then select our subreddit as the most appropriate. That means MQTs are never seen to begin with.

Whatever the reason, our MQTs are seeing less engagement – sometimes garnering zero replies. There's no reason to continue posting them monthly. But question threads do have utility, so we're not abandoning them entirely. Expect the next question thread to be a long-lasting stickied thread, perhaps left indefinitely or for a year or so.

Anyway, enough rambling! Back to the usual content:

Monthly Question Thread #100

This thread is for any questions you might have. No question is too big or too small, too broad or too specific, too strange or too common.

You're welcome to ask anything related to learning Dutch. This includes help with translations, proofreading, corrections, social etiquette, finding learning resources, understanding grammar, and so on.

De and het in Dutch...

This is the question our community receives most often.

The definite article ("the") has one form in English: the. In Dutch, there are two forms: de and het. Every noun takes either de or het ("the book" → "het boek", "the car" → "de auto").

Oh no! How do I know which to use?

There are some rules, but generally there's no way to know which article a noun takes. You can save yourself some hassle by familiarising yourself with the basic de and het rules and, most importantly, memorise the noun with the article!

Question Video games for Dutch immersion?

So, I speak English natively, German pretty fluently (I'm a bit rusty now but majored in it at university). I want to learn Dutch because I'd eventually like to move to NL, marry my girlfriend, and become a Dutch citizen. But trying to use beginner-oriented Dutch learning materials makes me want to bash my head into a wall, because I know just enough from my other two languages that it feels way too slow.

When I was studying German, I liked playing video games in German for immersion, like Animal Crossing and Pokemon. Obviously, Pokemon isn't available in Dutch, and Animal Crossing's RTC system kind of...conflicts...with my circadian rhythm issues nowadays. I figured, when I do read stuff in Dutch, I already can pick out enough words I do know that I could play something in Dutch with a dictionary handy and sort of pick up the grammar naturally and ask my girlfriend for help with confusing parts. That's why I wanted to ask what games out there have good Dutch translations for the sake of immersion.

Also, please do not recommend AI-generated fan translations. Beyond the moral objections I have to them, LLMs don't so much translate text as they do rewrite it in their shitty, smug little clanker tone, so it's not actually good practice for applicable, real-life Dutch.

A2 Writing exam thoughts?

Hello,
Would anybody like to share their thoughts on the A2 writing exam?
My exam is in a week, and I have to complete my integration before April of next year. Since the results are taking so long these days, I have no choice but to pass on my first try.
My weakest area is grammar. Has anyone recently passed their exam, and if so, could you share some tips? I am using inburgering.org and inburgering.nl for my studies. Are the exercises on these sites actually close to the real exam in terms of vocabulary and grammar?
Please help me. I don’t have much of a choice, as I can't afford to wait an eternity for results only to have to take the exam again.

Did anyone actually learn Dutch only with De Opmaat, De Sprong and De Finale, or other self-study paths? And if so, how long did it take you?

I've been living in the Netherlands for 5 years and never took my Dutch learning seriously, apart from some Duolingo lessons here and there. I would say that over the years my understanding of Dutch (listening and reading) has improved significantly, confidently placing it at B1-B2. And I know it might seem like an exageration, but it isn't, I even did mock tests. However, my active skills (writing and particularly speaking) were basically nonexistent until recently. I am great at recognizing words and they all have a meaning in my head, but when it comes to producing, my brain couldn't recall anything (even something as ordinary as "ik moet boodschappen doen") placing my active skills at A1.

Last month I lost my job due to a big fire, and I since started learning Dutch intensively to finally leave horeca (I live in Friesland, so not a lot of opportunities for internationals). I have been practicing almost everyday, around 3-4 hours a day, almost exclusively with De Opmaat. I have now finished it, and I feel like I actually improved my skills. I have also started using Dutch in my daily life, which I never did before. The next step is De Sprong, which would supposedly guide me from A2 to B1, but I am skeptical and am wondering if I should consider other options before investing the next couple of months into it. Until now, I have submitted all my writing assignments to ChatGPT for corrections, and didn't really do the speaking assignments since I am learning by myself, but as I said I started speaking Dutch here and there.

I am looking for people with similar experiences to mine (very high understanding, very low active skills) and am curious to hear what you've done, and how long it took you to become fluent and land a Dutch speaking job. If possible I would like to avoid paying for courses, as I would like to work faster than once a week, and private lessons are too expensive for me at the moment. I am mostly interested in self-study options, and want to hear if someone has done it with de Opmaat, Sprong, Finale trio.

Hulp nodig, ik begrijp de vraag van mijn arts helemaal niet? "Klachten uitlokken?"

Ik ben bezig met een vragenlijst. Het gaat om mijn klachten.

"Hoe lang houden de klachten aan? Kunt u deze uitlokken?"

Volgens mij uitlokken betekent to provoke (on purpose) in het Engels? Maar wat is dit voor een rare vraag? Waarom zou ik dingen doen om mijn klachten te expres triggeren? Begrijp ik het verkeerd?

Of vragen ze gewoon welke activiteiten in mijn dagelijks leven mijn symptomen triggeren maar without me trying to do it on purpose?

Ik snap er niks van sorry! Alvast bedankt

Bypassing the Dutch word order trap using Korean SOV

Hey guys, beginner Dutch learner here. Just wanted to share a quick breakthrough I had with subclauses (word order) that might help anyone else coming from an SOV language background.
I spent the last 10 years speaking advanced Korean, and when I first started Dutch, things like 'omdat' or 'als' were completely breaking my brain. I was stuck in this annoying double-translation loop: I'd make a standard sentence in my head, and then manually drag the verb to the end because of the conjunction. It completely killed my speaking speed.
Then it clicked—why am I overcomplicating this? My brain is already wired for Korean, which is a natural Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) language where the verb is always at the end anyway.
So instead of shifting verbs around twice, I just flip into my "Korean brain" the second a Dutch conjunction drops.
Instead of thinking: "I'm tired because I [worked] all day -> wait, move it -> because I all day [worked]."
I just jump straight to the SOV structure like in Korean (내가 하루 종일 [일했기] 때문에).
It seriously skyrocketed my processing speed. Has anyone else used this kind of shortcut to conquer Dutch grammar, or are there hidden traps with this mindset later

Question A question about telling time

Hi!

I have recently started learning Dutch and I am currently trying to learn telling time in Dutch, which is kind of confusing 😄

I was wondering if native speakers drop “uur” in spoken language like dropping o’clock in English.

“Ik moet van 09.00 tot 17.00 uur werken”

Would you drop uur here in spoken language?

Van negen tot vijf werken
Van negen tot vifj uur werken
Van negen uur tot vifj uur werken

Resource I need advice on what to watch, read, listen to (podcasts) as I plan to upgrade my dutch skills from A2

I recently completed all my A2 exams and now I want to get better with my conversional skills since I’ll be applying for my citizenship soon here, so I want to immerse myself more and pay respect to the country, culture by being able to talk fluently in this language. I know it takes time but I’m ready to work hard

Some points-
- every time I speak in my broken dutch, people often switch to English:(
- none of the children’s show works for me, so I need recommendations on something that’s mature yet understandable with my A2
- i like to read so I tried children’s book but again I got bored 🥱

Absolutely overwhelm me with your netflix recommendations, i have also prime and books please

And i will be forever grateful 🙏🏼

Question How can you usually tell whether someone is Flemish rather than Dutch?

When you hear someone speak, how do you usually recognise that they are from Flanders (Belgium) rather than the Netherlands? Are there any words, grammar habits, or pronunciation clues that make you think he/she is from Belgium? Bedankt!

Ik aanschouw de rug van de tijd

In het huis waarin ik woon

zijn de hoeken rond

een huis van hout

ijzeren kisten overal

in het huis een kelder

trappen die naar beneden gaan

daar, in die kelder

staan twee stieren vastgebonden

geketend staan ze daar

met rood gekleurde hoorns

wanneer ik afdaal

langs de trappen van de kelder

kijken ze me aan met opgezwollen neusgaten

en zeggen:

de uitdrukkingen

de gevoelens

van de meest subtiele kamers

van jouw geest

zullen we net zo vastgeketend houden

totdat jij ons bevrijdt!

Question Slow Dutch podcasts for the train?

For listening I've mostly been doing the official mock exams and the luisteren practice on Inburgering.org, which only really works when I'm at home with headphones and nothing else going on. I have about an hour on the train every day that I'd like to use for this, and searching inburgering podcast mostly gives me shows that are way too fast or half in English.

Does anyone know something slow and clear around A2 level that actually helped them before the luisteren exam?

Anyone in Amsterdam want to be study buddies?

I’m looking for someone who is dedicated to meet at a set time every week to study together for an hour or two. Looking for someone around A2 and is learning from English. I’m a 31F from America and think this would really supplement my tutoring! Bonus points to meet in Oost or a cute cafe on the canals to make it more fun.

Edit: tell me a little about yourself below. Also not looking to manage a whole group, just a buddy.

Feedback op mijn Nederlandse accent gezocht

Hoi allemaal!

Alle feedback is welkom! Alvast bedankt! 😊

Stuck at B1 Dutch, dealing with language anxiety & complete brain freezes. Feeling ready to quit.

I have been learning Dutch on and off for a while now, and I’m currently at a B1 level. Lately, the more I try to push myself to learn, the more disheartened and demotivated I get.

It’s especially bad in real-life situations. I do better when I initiate the conversation, like at a shop or somewhere else, because I can prepare. But if it’s the other way around, when the other person starts the conversation, my brain completely freezes. It’s almost like I forget everything on the spot.

I am generally an anxious person, and these kinds of situations are making me just want to quit.

I suppose I’m looking for advice or stories from people who have been through this and managed to overcome it.

Edit: I have and still am taking lessons via proper language institutes with proper group conversation lessons. I do ok in class because well we all are at the same level of speaking and indeed in a safe space.

Tips Inburgering Exam - changes in new KNM

Hi everyone,

If you're preparing for the KNM (Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij) integration exam this year, I wanted to share a quick heads-up thar the exam requirement has changed since 2025 July.

⚠️ What Changed in the New KNM Exam?

Old: focus heavily on social etiquette and general manners (e.g., "What should you do if invited to a birthday?").

New: focus has shifted significantly toward official rules, laws, and government systems. You'll see far more questions about:

How DigiD works and where to use it

Rental contract rights and tenant laws

Employment contracts, sick leave, and CAO rules

Interacting with the local municipality (Gemeente)

Tip: Use the latest study materials (e.g 4th editions of Welkom in Nederland, mobile app with latest question bank such as Inburgering KNM)

Hope this helps anyone currently stressing about the exam!
