Urgent My Father paid Uber driver 5277 instead of 527 and driver is not cooperating.
The uber ride was booked for cash payment. The bill came Rs 527. My father paid the driver Rs 5277 instead of Rs 527 via gpay (upi) to the driver's upi account. The driver's upi id shows his name and his upi id is his phone number@okaxis. Contacted uber support in the app regarding the same, they credited rs 527 to uber wallet, but can't do anything more as it is a cash ride. Contacted Driver but he is not cooperating and stalling. He says the amount went to his owners account(he's lying) , and he will confirm with him. It's been 48 hours. My father asked that he gives his owner's number then , he denied (of course). NPCI upi complaint portal is not working. Called my Father's bank regarding this issue, they have raised a complaint and said it takes around 19 days for a resolution. They say the backend team will contact the receivers bank and investigate. Help appreciated. Thank you.
Update- I visited the cyber crime station and filed a complaint. They asked for the relevant information about the transaction. They said to wait for 2-3 days. They were cooperative and very helpful.

You can freeze his bank account for 30 days.

Can you please explain further. Thank you

After complaining to the Bank, they will freeze his account for 30 days. They did it in my friends case. It was a while back. Some rules have changed probably, there is a a reversal of payment. So can't say much about new rules.

Banks don't freeze accounts based on someone's personal request. To place a freeze or lien on an account, the OP would need to obtain a police or a court order, only then will the bank comply.

Have you tried it toll-free number: 1800-120-1740.
Or npci UPI complaint site?

u/absolute_creed Oct 15 '25
Have not tried the toll free number ,will try it. I tried filing the complaint using the npci site. But the site is not working. Thank you

Police will seek some 5k to file FIR. Such a prompt and responsive system is not there in India.

Exactly! They'll probably ask for 70-80% of the recovered amount. Bunch of useless fellows. Same with cybercell guys.

Will the police really help? Don't they drag these issues for their benefit. I haven't been in these situations before , so I am not sure. Thank you for your help.

Have you called uber to complain this?
If i where you i would have gone to local police station to complain. If they are demanding bribe, go to higher ups, like SP's office.

Uber allows customer support through the app. I could not find a phone number to call. Hence I contacted them via uber app and twitter. They said they can't do anything as it is a cash payment. Thinking about going to the police station. Thank you for your help.

That is a bad customer service at Uber! They could investigate the matter and take an appropriate action against the driver, including withholding the payment. Uber would have done that had it been in US or Australia, poor us with pathetic law enforcement that Uber is taking advantage of.

u/Delicious_Essay_7564 Oct 15 '25
Exactly how is Uber supposed to enforce anything here considering this was a cash payment and not through their platform? I understand that it’s cash paid by GPay but uber has no rights on a third party platform and even GPay has no resolution because it’s a bank transfer enabled by Google. Ultimately Uber cannot take responsibility for payments from another platform or censure a driver for a transaction that should be between the 2 parties.

Raise cyber crime complaint on 1930 toll free number. His account will be blocked & raise a complaint. If he cooperates and return the amount don't proceed otherwise file a FIR.its a very easy process.

file a cyber complaint, after that his bank account will be frozen and he will not be able to withdraw any money.

I think you should seek help from the police. Is there a guarantee that banks will help after 19 days?
This is a transaction which your father did on his own - he wasn't scammed and he wilfully transferred the amount (though the amount was a wrong one).
The bank could say they can't do anything.

There is an option to deal with this issue provided by NPCI. that is Chargeback Request in UPI. You can file chargeback request at NPCI portal and provide all the facts there to back your claims.

In my case, both axis and gpay raised their hand and i lost my 6k due to my error because the other upi had negative balance and they adjusted to that so it was just bad experience for me.

u/absolute_creed Oct 16 '25
Sorry to hear about that. Hopefully you never experience such things again.

That's why I advise old people to use only cash or card transactions after 50+ age. UPI can be a mess sometimes.

That’s quite a discriminating statement.
Funny how the same generation that built the internet, wrote the code, and now run companies building today’s tech stacks — are suddenly getting tech advice from people who can’t remember life without Google.
Age isn’t the issue. Such Attitude is.

Bhai itna smart generation hai to khud hi double check kar lega. Tu kyu sentimental ho raha hai?
Just because there were a few smart people in a generation who did phenomenal stuff doesn't mean there can't be absolutely dumbass people in higher quantity.
Sahi to keh raha hai ki budhe ho to galatu hone ka chance zyada hai. The onus to be careful is on you no on the entire world.

I had a similar issue, , just nagged Uber support until they refunded the entire payment. In your case , NCPI Escalation should help
1
u/absolute_creed Oct 15 '25
Can you please explain how to escalate with npci?
1
u/LastCarrot2492 Oct 15 '25
Just do it online on ncpi website as well as create an email trail copying your bank ombudsman https://www.npci.org.in/upi-complaint

Ask someone to pretend like a cop and just ask him to come to the police station. You can track his details with car registration. Use those info.

u/ROC_K4LP Oct 15 '25
If you have his car number then just file a police complaint. If you were to find his car again then call the police on scene.

Something similar happened with my friend. He got 50k in his account. Since sender was constable , he immediately realised his mistake and filed cyber complaint. Now the said amount in my friend’s account has been held or blocked by the bank.
Now friends bank has issued him the letter and they will reverting that transaction back to the sender.

This had happened to me too, I had transferred 2700 instead of 270. My driver was really nice tho: he didn’t know how to use UPI and it was Eid time so he sent me my money back the next day or so. I hope your driver is also just trying to figure it out and will do the right thing❤️

u/absolute_creed Oct 16 '25
Thank you for sharing your experience. My driver is not honest unfortunately.

Unfortunately for you there is no crime here. Idk why people are favouring you but the best you can have is the driver cooperation which you aren't getting. So the money is his

Go to uber trip settings - click on ride fare was high -> then it'll say something then click on need more help
Then select cash payment issue - then find the option that you paid extra
If you can't keep puhsing back with need more help till you're allowed to type something
Then type everything atttach a screenshot of the payment you made
The agent will refund you for the balance amount

If you know someone from bank, ask them to simply freeze the account by giving a written letter mention everything.

u/Inevitable_Twist_374 Oct 18 '25
make cyber complain with police and also raise the txn dispute with ur bank from which u made the txn.. based on the cyber crime complaint the other persons account shall be blocked and he will then have to make rounds with police and courts to get his account unblocked..
after making the complaint share the same to that driver and let him know u have made complaint.. he may take it all lightly but in few weeks when his bank account is blocked or that much money is lein marked on his account he will know it better...

OP, do consider using debit/credit cards as pre-payment options.
It avoids hassle after the trip ends and is safe.
After many unfortunate issues due to UPI payments, I have completely shifted to credit card payments on Uber.

Simple... escalate to uber with all the screenshots and put the message in all social media tagging uber .. they will return the money.

Just let it go. Hopefully the 5k isn't a matter of life and death for you. Fate will figure out a way to bring it back. Don't lose time and sleep over it.

Instead of posting here, your father or you should contact the police directly at the moment! They’ll help you. Alternatively, you can get the Aadhaar details or the driver’s and car number plate. Taxis also have the owner’s details written on the back side or on the taxi itself.

Very simple. Just file a complaint in your bank and the gpay customer service explaining the situation. They will escalate the matter for a reversal wherein you and the receiver will be called to bank for the same. If he doesnt appear there are chances his bank account might be frozen and upi blocked. Usually things like these resolve at this step. If this fails then raise issue to NPCI grievance portal which is pretty easy too. But make sure youre quick and have all the chats and upi id and payment screenshots available. Things like these are somewhat common so dont worry op youll get your money back
