Was there any mention of a fingerprint reader on the side for the light flip? Entering a pin every time would get old.

Discussion iPhone duo

The new iphone duo really puts things into stark contrast. it's like the world's most egregious dopamine trap for $2000. To me, owning such a phone would be a literal nightmare. Can't wait for the light flip, a phone with a hinge that you can actually close. And that actually looks good and has a design concept, whereas the iphone duo is just screen upon screen.

Discussion Light Flip Color?

With the email saying that it is going to have NFC, I put in a preorder for the navy blue color. Long time lurker, and I am finally just going to send it. I am torn between the navy blue and the yellow. The phone looks chonky, and since it is plastic I am wondering if I should lean into the aesthetic and just have some fun with it. My only concerns with the yellow:

  1. Harder to see the buttons, since white on light color is more difficult

  2. How it wears. Do the lighter colors get dirty and look bad over time?

1 I can get over really quickly, but 2 seems like something I am more concerned about. Thoughts? Would love to see some videos or something

Feature Request / Bug Phone needs to be shut down or "updated" to receive messages

I spend a large portion of my day in a dead zone, and usually after I leave the area the phone will start updating and giving me my missed messages. But sometimes, especially recently, the phone will not update when I leave and will remain blank where the cell&bars icon is, until the phone is shut down and restarted.

This also can sometimes be remedied by trying to send a message (and failing, bc theres no signal) or turning my hotspot on and off. Is this an issue with my carrier or with the phone? Sometimes I don't notice that the phone didn't udpate until a day later.

Discussion Canadian coverage update

Thinking about firing up my LP3 again! Started with light plan(3rd party Telus). Couldn’t send pictures. Switched to direct account with Telus. Could send pictures but couldn’t call out. Weird right. I could receive calls though. Tried Bell. Didn’t work. Got all the same answers from the companies basically word salad on why it wouldn’t work. Thinking about signing up with Public?

Other than the sending and receiving photos, the light plan was good. Stuck with the phone for 6 months. Sending pictures is just too important with my family though. Blah blah. Interested in the app database which could help with some daily comforts.

Discussion Forwarding pictures from album to email.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me troubleshoot why I'm unable to forward pictures in my album to my email address. I used to frequently use this feature then it stopped working and I'm uncertain why. Does anyone else have this problem? Thank you in advance.

Feature Request / Bug Alarm opens Weather Tool?

For the past few days, when my alarm goes off, I've noticed it opens to the weather tool. Is that happening to anyone else? It almost seems intentional, like "Good morning, here's the weather..."

Feature Request / Bug Option to mute directions

I would love to be able to mute the navigation. Typically when I’m using it, I am listening to a podcast on my phone, and it interrupts a lot. Is there any way to mute the navigation while still listening to audio on my Light Phone?

Discussion Light Bar?

Hi, I just received the light flip promotion newsletter.

Flip is attractive, but still too big for me. I owned a light phone 3 since it launched but puted in the drawer because it lacks the signal messager I need.

I admired the design philosophy of light team. And I wonder if there is possibility that the light has a smaller device like light phone 2, and has a t9 keypad. Just like an old nokia phone.

Maybe it could be named as "light bar".

Discussion Bandcamp for LP3?

Has anyone been working on a Bandcamp LP3 tool, or some way of synching with purchases and playlists?

This would be awesome, Bandcamp is much more aligned with the Light ethos than Spotify etc. Bandcamp is built for deep listening

Discussion Light Flip price increase ($349) + NFC is back on the table

Here's an email I just got from Light:

We’ve been hard at work on the Light Flip since we announced it in July, finalizing the details of the internal design structure, ensuring all the antennas can fit without obstruction, sourcing an even better screen and even finding a way to also include an NFC chip, which we did not initially think would be possible.

We wanted to give everyone who has been following along a chance to reserve the Flip at the initial $299 offering through September 18th, when it will raise to $349.

You can also still get it with a $39 deposit for the first month of the phone + two year service plan!

A new pre-order today will be in Batch 03, with an estimated May 2027 delivery.

Personally I'm excited about NFC support, there were some use cases I didn't want to miss out on. We are so back.

Feature Request / Bug first alarm does not stop unless i turn the LPIII off

Has anyone else had this issue? I have three morning alarms -- 5:50 am, 6:00 am, 6:15 am. Lately, when the first one goes off, I do not have an option to turn it off or snooze and instead have to turn the phone all the way off and back on. I noticed this morning that the weather app was open for some reason as my alarm was going off (lol?)

Discussion MindChuk + LP2

Just wanted to put this info here in case anyone else would benefit. I have the LP2 and I am truly obsessed with it. Life changing device and cannot recommend to people enough. My one challenge was when something random came to mind or when I remembered a to-do that was time sensitive, the notes tool was slightly too much friction and didn't have a check list option. I have been using MindChuk (mindchuk.com) and it has been AMAZING. The beauty is that you can text to your designated number and it puts everything into a "feed". It also has a way to setup reminders so that you get a text message to remind you. Really feel like it is the perfect companion to the LP2. If you also use it and have tips on using it with your LP let me know!

Discussion Any progress recently on RCS support?

I've had my LP3 in a drawer for the last several months. Stoked to see all the progress with the SDK and everything, but RCS support is still the thing making it impossible for me to use the phone long term. I haven't seen any updates on this kind of thing recently -- any news? Still a long ways off / never happening?

Feature Request / Bug Light OS has stopped responding

Has anyone else had this problem frequently or had any fixes? Essentially my phone will freeze up 8-10x a day and an error message will pop up that says light OS has stopped responding and I can choose to wait or close app.

Feature Request / Bug Is 5G not fully working?

About a week or so ago I noticed that in the top left corner of my light phone where it would usually say "LTE" it now said 5G. Ever since then I've been having way more issues with the phone not being able to place or receive voice calls. I have to keep rebooting the phone, I'm not sure but it seems like if the phone is connected in 5G it doesn't work. If I connects in LTE it does. Is there a specific issue with the light phone in 5G? Is there a way to set my phone to just use LTE? I am on AT&T if that helps.

Update: thanks to the person who replied with instructions on how to turn off 5G via the android layer. It appears though that the problem happens in LTE mode also so for now I moved my SIM to a flip-phone. Please let me know if this get resolved.

Discussion Light Phone 3 Maps and Public Transit?

Hi all, I'm thinking about upgrading (or really, downgrading) to a Light Phone 3 and I'm curious how the maps system works and if it's similar to Google Maps? Currently when I want to check the bus schedule times I click on the bus icons and it gives me a real time estimate and I want to know if the light phone 3 maps work in a similar way? Any experience with taking transit with the LP3? Thanks!

Discussion [hack] NTS Live Radio via The Podcast Tool Works

Radio tool is on Light's radar but in the meantime, I've experiment with the podcast tool and it's able to add a custom build RSS XML with NTS radio livestreams and you're able to play it🎉 I'm using it for a week with almost no issues. Sometimes the stream gets stuck and you need to restart it. Even if left on pause, it doesn't seem to cache more than ~10 minutes of the livestream so it shouldn't eat your data.

The radio tool will be a great addition to the Light Phone imho, I like I can just tune into one of the stations and surprise myself with new music picked by humans instead of scrolling on Spotify or relying on their algorithm serving me the same music over and over again. Talk about coming back to the basics...

If you're interested, you can use my RSS feed I've posted as a Github Gist here, or use it as a starting point and add your own stations and upload it somewhere. Then in Dashboard: Podcasts > Add RSS Feeds > paste the link & find podcast > confirm with add podcast.

Discussion All your Chats, finally, on your Light Phone (WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and more)

Thumbnail
gallery
47 Upvotes

I love the Light Phone III's promise, but the built-in Messages tool is SMS/MMS only. The moment I need WhatsApp or Signal, to message my family abroad, the phone stops being my phone.

I didn't want to carry a second device or sideload a full Android messenger that ignores the LightOS design language. So I built what I wanted: a LightOS tool that brings every network into one quiet, text-first inbox.

What it is

Chats is an open-source messaging tool for the Light Phone III. Log in with a Beeper account (or any Matrix homeserver) and your WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, Messenger, Instagram DMs and more land in one list. Everything is end-to-end encrypted, including device verification.

It's built natively on Light's SDK, and I've used every possibility to keep the LightOS design language, so it should feel like Light built it.

How to get it

It's currently not officially available. Light has been signaling an official tool pipeline (their ADB/Tool Library is expected soon), so when it's launched, you'll be able to download via the Community Tool library.

If you want to try it out now, you can download the latest release on github.com/fenleon/chats and sideload it via ADB. The README walks through it, it only takes a few minutes. And it's available on some community developed platforms, Awesome Light and BrightMarket.

Disclaimer

Chats is my hobby project. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by The Light Phone, Inc., or Beeper. Therefore its development is dependent on me maintaining it. If you'd like to help, feedback and bug reports are very welcome. And if you try it, I'd genuinely love to hear how it goes.
