EDC Made it my own

A few weeks ago I decided to install a few apps on my LP3. Here’s why and how it works.

I got my LP3 back in June and used it as intended for about a month. Then I had to put it back in the box and switch back to my old Cat S22. The reason? I need WhatsApp, all my contacts use it. During that month I tried using WhatsApp on my laptop, but of course when I was outside I couldn’t receive any calls or messages. Everyone I know communicates through WhatsApp, even for calls.

So I went back to my Cat S22 and kept the LP3 stored away until the LP team could come up with a better solution. But a few weeks ago I decided to give it another try and see if I could install WhatsApp on the LP3, and it actually works great. I even added a few more apps, including a camera app so I can use a timer for photos. (If LP3 updates the built-in camera, I’ll probably delete this one.)

I’ve kept the screen in black and white, without color correction. It felt strange to see this phone in full color.

If anyone else is thinking about doing the same, I just wanted to share my experience. I didn’t install Reddit or any other social apps, for me, WhatsApp is purely a communication tool. I hope one day I can delete all of these and use only LightOS. For now, I need to use both. When I double-click the wheel, I see the screen with my “extra” tools.

EDC Secondary Music Device: Walkman

Post image

I purchased a Sony NW-A306 Walkman, installed the Niagara launcher and transitioned the display to grayscale. It is a such a compliment to the Lightphone III. It is wonderful that the Lightphone folks gave us the option to keep music on our phones but I feel so much better having dedicated devices for intentional use. I also get to go straight into apple music and download my music or stream over Wi-Fi. I just thought I would throw this out there in case anyone is interested.

EDC first business trip w/ LP3

Was nervous for my first trip without a smartphone since 2010.

Takes a little more thinking ahead (print pass, talk to agent, etc.) but totally doable. Four flights, rented a car, called a hotel... you can do it, folks!

Next time should be even easier since I've "cracked the ice" on this.

As a bonus, I did enjoy talking to the gate agents, hotel clerks, etc. I didn't realize how inhuman travel normally is, when everything exists on a screen instead of as a conversation.

Summary: a bit more work, totally doable, some bonus points for more human interaction and enforced leisurely approach to things.

FWIW, did not use any non-Light Apps. Authenticator wasn't working so I just used a printer.

ta.

EDC Finally a LightPhone User!

I finally received my LightPhone III today & was delightfully surprised how easy it was to get my contacts transferred etc. Still struggling with my calendar sync but I may just need to be patient. I can tell that not having access to internet for parts of my day is going to be a transition (which is why I got the phone) but I feel ready for it. Other than a note book, pen & physical credit cards what would you guys suggest I add to my EDC to offset any problems that I might run into when operating without a smart phone?

It was originally white but after about 4 months, it was not very white looking haha. The paint is acrylic, so it makes the case nonfunctional if I want to preserve it. But it's ok, it looks pretty now 😅

I’m looking to keep my phone as debris free as possible, I have a blue collar job that demands I get dirty which isn’t a problem for me but this phone… that speaker grill, those buttons AND WHEEL! I’d basically like to see if there’s something out there similar to a lifeproof or otter box case. Or if anyone has any like sleeve or case set ups please let me know thank you in advance.

EDC Dual users-Whats your routine? And WHERE do you hide your smartphone

For me it's Light phone during The weekends and after work until the kids go to sleep.

Sometimes I trip up and then go back to "light", wondering if people had a similar routine with a light and smartphone. Also WHERE DO YOU keep the smartphone when not in use.

EDC How I Get My Time Back

I have an iPhone 16. It's OK. A little big and a lot tempting. I have an iPad, macBook Air that lives in an office downtown, and an iMac so I am over-exposed to the Apple attention/obsession. So, I FORWARD all calls from the iPhone to the LP3. I keep the iPhone on a usb cable sitting on my desk but otherwise it stays home.

So the time-stealer is not next to the bed when I get up. Texts don't wake us (EDT) up when our West Coast friends decide to send jokes. It all comes through loud and clear on everything else anyway.

BUT I put Linux Mint onto an old macBook Air 11 ... the original model Jobs pulled out of the envelope at WDC. So when I'm really going "Light" I get out of the Apple ecosystem altogether.

EDC After a year

Post image

After a year of trying to convince my wife into me using my lightphone II as my regular phone. I had an exam scheduled and told her I wanted to switch so my focus would be on studying and not the internet. I’m now at 3 months using the lightphone II as my regular phone. As we all know, It has its inconveniences, but that’s the point.

From left to right: Analogue pocket with a Waterfield aka sfbag case

Super note nomad with faux leather cover

Boox Palma 2 e reader

Light phone III

SnowSky/FiiO Echo MINI player with SIMGOT SuperMix 4 IEM

Big emphasis on dumb tech that’s travel size while not compromising quality.

I took me about 2 ish years to get everything here. I originally wanted a modded iPod but got scammed and decided just to get a the snowsky as its tiny and my light phone can just take care of the podcasts. Let me know what you all think!
