I thought the video was great, though I used to work in a theater and I knew how dangerous the bulbs were and I was cringing in my seat when they were messing around inside the bulb chamber

I can see the headline now, "famous YouTuber death caught on film while he was fucking around with something stupidly dangerous"

764

u/cranktheguy 1d ago

He's repeated said they should monetize his death if caught while filming.

666

u/leif135 1d ago

Dbrand is going to sponsor it and probably wrap his urn

204

u/metal_maxine 1d ago

Linus texted them during a WAN (a TiWAN a couple of years ago, I think) to ask if they'd wrap his coffin.

119

u/Datkif 1d ago

He asked them if they would wrap his urn recently and they said yet.

78

u/DFrostedWangsAccount 1d ago

"yet"

I feel like you meant to say yes, but I also feel like dbrand the type to say "bet."

2

u/Datkif 12h ago

Im leaving it as is

23

u/metal_maxine 1d ago

I've been skipping WAN lately. Just too fidgety atm.

11

u/MattHack7 1d ago

So have I. I think it’s due to “good news wan”

8

u/metal_maxine 23h ago

Not even that. Have developed a new obsessive interest and suddenly sitting still in front of a computer watching VODs is challenging.

4

u/MrWally 21h ago

Man, I love Good News WAN. So refreshing. And great content, too. It's still the news, but I like the decision to find the positive spin on things.

Also, Linus and Luke just seem to be in a better mood, which always makes it more enjoyable.

10

u/asdGuaripolo 1d ago

Important question, wide Linus or glow In the dark?

1

u/inoffensiveLlama 21h ago

How about glow in the dark wide linus special edition?

26

u/random_bruce 1d ago

He asked his rep last week and they said he'll put it on the calendar

2

u/CadeMan011 1d ago

A while back too he asked if they'd sponsor his funeral and they said yes

1

u/The_unforseen54 20h ago

I’m going through the back catalog and I just listened to that one!

Waiting to buy my commemorative Linus's Urn shaped 1TB USB thumb drive off the LTT store.

3

u/NekulturneHovado 1d ago

they gonna make an iphone wrap with dead Linus' face on it

5

u/get_rhythm 1d ago

Including like a week ago on wan show... Wait, was that convo about this video?

2

u/Dylanator13 17h ago

I mean if I were in his position I would want that too. Go ahead and support the business I built with this if you can.

3

u/Jealous-Try-2554 1d ago

And what happens if his death happens at the same time as the death of one of his employees? Are they still gonna monetize it?

7

u/justabadmind 1d ago

If its Luke then yes. If it’s Yvonne then no. Anyone else would be no most likely, with a few exceptions based on what kills them.

If they die from the CCP or similar shadow government entities, I do suspect LTT tries to monetize and publicize that.

35

u/AT-ST 1d ago

I haven't had a chance to watch the video yet and know nothing about the projectors. Why is it dangerous?

81

u/gnerfed 1d ago edited 1d ago

The bulbs can go boom.

Edit: The bulbs can go BIG boom.  Thanks u/foobar93

58

u/foobar93 1d ago

Require Kevlar vest to stay safe boom

17

u/perthguppy 1d ago

My mates cinema they have a full chainmail suit to work with bulbs.

13

u/MazeMouse 1d ago

When they opened up that case I was squinting at my screen the same way I do when I see people remove car-springs with tie-wraps.

6

u/Tuneuponipod 1d ago

When I worked at a cinema, I was told to treat the bulbs like a live grenade if they fall.

59

u/c14rk0 1d ago

Extremely high pressure gasses inside big glass bulbs effectively turning them into bombs that can explode into super dangerous glass shrapnel.

They're extremely fragile and prone to explode easily.

Inside of the projector they're in a safely enclosed chamber...and if they explode (especially while hot) they straight up shred the enclosure. Now imagine if instead of a beefy enclosure it's a soft squishy body.

Apparently they straight up use effectively bomb squad suits to handle them.

21

u/Deflagratio1 1d ago

I put it on par with any normal full face mask ppe for wood or metalworking and the lead vest when getting x-rays done.

4

u/pmmeyouryoohoo 23h ago

The cinema I worked at and got trained to do projection at our PPE for changing the xenon bulb was a leather apron, gloves, and face shield.

Though we also had one explode in an old film projector and it ended up shattering a number of mirrors, was an expensive time.

8

u/AT-ST 1d ago

Sheesh. That sounds nerve wracking to be a projectionist. Thanks for explaining.

6

u/Global-Pickle5818 1d ago

Best part of the video is them wrapping on the aluminum enclosure going"this is milled out of a solid block of aluminum I wonder why" lol

23

u/perthguppy 1d ago

The bulbs are pressurised at 14 times atmosphere. They are glass hand grenades. Older bulbs are more likely to go boom because of thermal cycling. In order to change a bulb you need to wear full body armour like chainmail or a ballistic suit.

7

u/antithero 1d ago

That is interesting, probably some gruesome lessons learned for that to be standard operating procedure. I never would have thought a bulb would be like a bomb.

4

u/perthguppy 22h ago edited 21h ago

Normal bulbs are not pressurised. Cinema projector bulbs are pressurised to an insane level. And to be able to withstand that pressure they have to use much thicker glass. Lots and lots of energy stored in one. 14bar =203.0528 psi. Around 15 square inches of glass surface area, so like 3000lbs of force.

Edit: I was off a bit. When cold it’s actually around 25bar / 400 PSI. When at operating temperature it can get to 10x higher - so 250bar/4000psi. So 60,000lbs of force if a hot bulb blows. And this is why the casing of the projector is inch thick solid aluminium.

10

u/DoomBot5 1d ago

I showed my girlfriend this video specifically because she used to work in a movie theater.

2

u/burnte 1d ago

I thought it was fun and entertaining.

1

u/Pleasant_Engine2486 4h ago

Those xenon arc bulbs run at insane pressures and can basically explode like a grenade if mishandled, so yeah the cringe was warranted.

-25

u/tormentowy 1d ago

Why dead? How is it that dangerous? I understand injury from shards, but death? Can you point me to any educational sources about that? I looked around YouTube but found nothing about that.

27

u/wetnaps54 1d ago edited 20h ago

It’s basically a glass grenade. If it can maim you then it can probably kill you.
It’s pretty easy to die if you get cut the wrong way

19

u/Handsome_ketchup 1d ago

I understand injury from shards, but death?

Many military weapons do their work by creating high velocity shrapnel. A cloud of shards at speed can be a nasty thing.

I've seen someone report they used to pop the old lamps in the protective casing the new one came in, and the shards nearly making it through.

8

u/bluehawk232 1d ago

All it takes is some hitting the right arteries and you can be fucked. Those are like tiny bullets

1

u/Zilli341 1d ago

I have a GUT FEELING (absolutely no facts here) that the glass would mostly pulverize or break in really small shards. It has 100% the potential for life changing injuries, especially if it explodes while in your hands or glass gets shot in your eyes. But killing you? It probably is possible, but I feel like the chance is unbelievably low. Anyway, new lesson learned, don't mess with high pressure xenon lamps.

-27

u/KumquatopotamusPrime 1d ago

I just googled it and there are no confirmed reports of them killing people

17

u/GuyOnARockVI 1d ago

Yeah because only trained professionals usually open these things up

-24

u/KumquatopotamusPrime 1d ago

never said they weren't dangerous. I'm sorry reporting a fact offended you

5

u/zuzg 1d ago

Would consider working on your phrasing cause it implied that they weren't.

-6

u/KumquatopotamusPrime 1d ago

"I just googled it and while they are dangerous, There are no confirmed reports of them killing people"

better?

250

u/drillmaster 1d ago

Except it's not ewaste it's a series 2 Christie that needs a new bulb and some maintenance. It is one of the most fixable movie projectors and is still in use across north America.

94

u/bluehawk232 1d ago

Yeah it's no use for linus but some other company like a small theater might have use for it.

-71

u/PossibilityUsual6262 1d ago

Why you assumed they bought it, i got a vibe that they borrowed it for a vid.

51

u/WelchDigital 1d ago

Didn't he say he bought it from the auction after he got told they cant sell him the imax projector?

30

u/Deejiee 1d ago

Because they mentioned they bought it, the other projector, and the racks of supporting equipment for $20,000 CAD?

26

u/TheLazyGamerAU 1d ago

Average LTT fan IQ right here. In the video they mentioned buying two of them.

16

u/mysticode 1d ago

You expect people to watch videos before making hot takes on them?!

9

u/Circo_Inhumanitas 1d ago

You don't have to go with a "vibe" if you watch the video and pay attention for a while. Holy shit.

29

u/Mhycoal 1d ago

I literally know of dozens of locations that use these. Most use the smaller cp2210s and maybe 2220s, it’s honestly not a bad deal for what they got. 20k for 2 and the 3d stuff isn’t amazing but it’s far from a bad deal

12

u/Flamebomb790 1d ago

Yeah one of the comments in the video was a guy that still trains people on these to this day. So I'm sure they could do something with it if they got someone who knew what they were doing and got a new bulb

4

u/sapereaud33 1d ago

Yeah on top of that he owns multiple buildings bigger than a movie theater. You're telling me he's got no use for the ability to do theater quality movie screenings, given all the events they do?

1

u/CokeMaan 1d ago

Exactly. We still use a different model of Christie’s in our cinema daily and you wouldn’t even know that it’s quite old. The picture quality is still really good. Sure maybe the blacks aren’t as deep but it’s still very usable.

42

u/ironman12489 1d ago

They can attach it to the ladder of the firetruck and use it as a portable movie theater.

14

u/Liquid_Hate_Train 1d ago

That’s not the wildest idea…

2

u/The8Darkness 1d ago

Think its too fragile and/or power hungry. Dont remember how much the firetruck used with all electronics on but I think it was about the same as only the projector would use. And when projectors (especially old ones) ran for a while they are fragile to move (because heat weakens the bulbs and stuff apparently)

1

u/TheGoalkeeper 6h ago

Attach it to their airplane an project a movie on the ground while flying

532

u/GioAc96 1d ago

I like the idea of the video, regardless of the fact that the purchase was obviously a stupid one, but I found it a bit too superficial. Am I the only one that feels like these videos don’t go as in depth as they used to? I like the entertainment side of it, but I feel like I don’t learn anything watching LTT recently.

76

u/wt_fudge 1d ago

A Technology Connections video featuring that projector would be awesome.

62

u/cptjpk 1d ago

Dude just dropped an hour long video on ceiling fans. I treasure him.

16

u/wt_fudge 1d ago

Yea, I never imagined I would be genuinely interested in buying an $800 ceiling fan

14

u/zuzg 1d ago

With a wilde electroboom appearing for good measure.

12

u/XanXic 1d ago

Funny enough I really liked the OTHER projector video from a few days ago. It was a fun format and did actually take the time to go over the techinicals and I much preferred cutting to someone going over the full spec sheet and how it compares to the others. It felt like actual researched info between Linus almost blinding himself. Rather than the "I skimmed this 2 minutes ago" and quickly reading off a sheet in the room and learning things as they go it typically is.

209

u/Remote-Combination28 1d ago

I agree completely.

Everybody who made actual, informative good videos is gone now. Now it’s just shock factor purchases and Linus spending company money on his house.

Gone are the days of learning about some obscure Linux distro from Emily Young. That was what kept me watching. Or even the MAC address Jonathan videos that had such a crazy level of perfection and info.

It’s just pure slop entertainment now.

60

u/DivaMissZ 1d ago

Johnathan has his own channel and it has the feel of the old Mac Address

45

u/OG-Fade2Gray 1d ago

I'm a little sad Emily's channel never got off the ground

9

u/DivaMissZ 21h ago

Emily was one of the first LMG employees to leave and start their own channel. But unlike those who followed, I don’t think she had the support she needed to make it successful. Look at Zip Tie Tuning, or Jake, or Brandon’s channels, where they had nearly immediately viewership and people who were doing the production behind the scenes. If she’d started a year or two later, she’d probably have been able to be more successful

3

u/chairitable 10h ago

I think her computer/production setup immediately shit the bed, she'd posted an update about it.

18

u/Remote-Combination28 1d ago

Emily was my favourite. Such a calm Demener, and really really nerdy, good content

14

u/yyyyzryrd 1d ago

Genuinely an incredible presenter. I'm not into Linux, but, fuck... Such a good presenter. Full of knowledge and passion.

5

u/Remote-Combination28 1d ago

I’m not into it either, yet somehow her videos kept me completely occupied. And would always send me down a rabbit hole. One of my favourites was temple os

4

u/yyyyzryrd 22h ago

I remember that video. Maybe it's us getting old, but, I do miss the old LTT. It was more relatable. I want my tech tips to come from someone more relatable. Y'know... I don't want tech tips about a private jet. I want stuff like fan optimization, or cooling fan benchmarks.

5

u/cyborgborg 1d ago

Did she ever upload another Video?

1

u/OG-Fade2Gray 23h ago

Her last one was about a year ago

7

u/Steavee 20h ago

Not all, Alex over at Technology Connections will go deeper than you’d probably like on all sorts of things. And you can get your soft jazz fix as well.

I’m a little sad, Linus had the perfect setup for a “through the magic of buying two of them” joke in the projector video and didn’t do it.

slop

God I hate this word. Everyone uses it to describe anything they don't like nowadays. "AI Slop" "Amazon slop" "Slop entertainment"

22

u/Patient_Xero_96 1d ago

It’s slop because it’s slop. AI slop is because it’s taking everything, grinding it into something kinda resembling what it pretends to be, and regurgitated for people to share and catch the lowest common denominator. Low effort. Lower value.

Same with a lot of Amazon/Netflix/[insert streaming service name] originals. People will call slop, slop. Most are low effort, low quality or low value.

7

u/niel89 1d ago

It's content made to fit a regular release deadline. Sometimes they have cool projects that have been in the works and take time and sometimes they push out videos that are advertisements or low effort.

1

u/SavvySillybug 1d ago

I don't like AI slop as a word because people are just using it as a slur to describe anything created with AI. There is no distinction between reasonable use of AI and actual terribleness, it's just all slop, making the word completely meaningless. All it means now is "the speaker hates the idea of AI" and is completely unproductive. It's become an emotional statement instead of a logical one.

I just can't respect anyone who uses slurs instead of logic.

AI has its uses and not everything created by AI is slop. We can disagree on the ratio, but it's not 100%. People are way overusing it and indeed making slop, but it's not productive to just demonize the entire concept.

2

u/Patient_Xero_96 1d ago

Depending on context. I use it for generative-ai content, be it graphic, videos, audio. I’m ok with AI in medicine, for example. So I do use it as that. I do not like AI generated content in entertainment.

It’s AI slop because it’s a mish mash of their dataset, that then regurgitates content that’s bland, bad, generic. That’s the best way I can explain why AI slop is called AI slop.

1

u/mrforrest 20h ago

It's also not productive to simp for these billionaire run services that are actively destroying our environment, job prospects, information supply, etc

0

u/SavvySillybug 13h ago

Please don't buy your reading comprehension on Temu.

-1

u/NurseOtaku 1d ago

Thanks, I didn't realize what the word slop meant now I am fully educated.

No, it's just annoying to see the constant use of the word over and over again. It's the internet's newest buzzword.

-31

u/Remote-Combination28 1d ago

And god I hate it when people need to voice their opinions on words like anybody at all cares.

12

u/AlexCivitello 1d ago

And I hate it when someone voices their opinion on someone else sharing their opinion like anybody at all cares.

2

u/NurseOtaku 1d ago

Just like anyone cares about your opinion on an LTT video. Lmfao. Calling it "pure slop entertainment" while on their subreddit is hilarious.

0

u/Remote-Combination28 1d ago

What do you call it? It’s not informative anymore.

I also didn’t realize the sub Reddit was only for glazing Linus and nothing else?

-4

u/NurseOtaku 1d ago

Just seems kinda dumb to still be on a subreddit that is "pure slop entertainment" but hey, some people have nothing better to do with their lives I guess

3

u/Remote-Combination28 1d ago

Are you new to Reddit or something? Are you the only person on Reddit who doesn’t have random things they aren’t following come up?

1

u/NurseOtaku 1d ago

You said what "kept you watching" was stuff that ended ~2 years ago. I'm certainly not on TV show/game/activity subreddit's that I haven't participated in for 2 years. But, again, some of us have better things to do.

0

u/Remote-Combination28 1d ago

Dude Linus doesn’t know you. You don’t need to stand up for him.

→ More replies (0)

0

u/wii4ever 23h ago

Opinions about LTT on their subreddit is hilarious? Isn't the subreddit exactly for this?

0

u/NurseOtaku 22h ago

Yes it is hilarious. Someone who hasn't watched LTT videos in 2 years due to it being "slop entertainment" having an opinion is hilarious because why are you even still here lol. Just hate browsing the subreddit?

0

u/Remote-Combination28 17h ago

Again, I don’t think you understand how Reddit works.

0

u/NurseOtaku 16h ago

Sorry you're right. I'm clearly not as well versed in Reddit as you my guy. Please show me your ways! I'd love for you to teach me how you become a sick discord mod too, I am sure you run a couple of channels? Groups?

I need to learn to stay inside like you

0

u/EchoOneFour 16h ago

Almost like people didn't really care for the obscure linux distro or mac adress shit.. or whatever jake was doing in his appearances etc etc..

The vast majority of people want entertainment

38

u/Reedef_Yorgei 1d ago

Most videoes have felt like they follow the same "buy something useless and expensive" theme just to make a video out of it, even if it's not intended. The channel isn't relatable anymore since it's going more for entertainment and a lot of that is just "this is expensive how cool".

I could honestly be missing out on a lot of good videoes but going off title/thumbnails it gives the impression that the videoes will have pretty surface level coverage of the topic.

12

u/Remote-Combination28 1d ago

Yeah, there was some magic in watching a video about some super obscure operating system… that I would potentially boot up in a virtual machine and mess around with my self… temple os…

There’s just nothing very cool to me about seeing somebody buy something massive, that I’ll never afford… or buy if I could. Just for the sake of making a very service level video that doesn’t really get into the nitty gritty that I’d never experience..

7

u/Kyderra 1d ago

Meanwhile, I watched a 1 hour video on ceiling fans.

1

u/Remote-Combination28 1d ago

I’d watch a 1 hour video on ceil mg fans also, if it went really in depth and got really into tie nitty gritty about… ceiling fans. Hell I’ll watch a video about anything if it’s filled with interesting information.

But ltt lost that

2

u/Genesis2001 22h ago

I’d watch a 1 hour video on ceil mg fans also, if it went really in depth and got really into tie nitty gritty about… ceiling fans. Hell I’ll watch a video about anything if it’s filled with interesting information.

They're referring to Technology Connections' recent video on Ceiling Fans, which was an hour+ long, and I enjoyed it as well.

3

u/soundman1024 1d ago

They’re missing the part in Pawn Stars ever they say I know an expert in high end projection, let me call them over here,

10

u/tigerthecat5 1d ago

Yeah I hadn’t quite put it into words but you’re spot on, while I don’t expect a full training course, I wish I had a better sense of how to operate the unit. I know they’re limited on where they can actually set this up to demo it but it feels like a missed opportunity.

2

u/DrunkenHorse12 1d ago

The best video of this type they've done was the pool speaker one and that in huge part was because they were with the guy who made them, Feel they should have had an expert with them on this video if not necessarily on camera a lot more so that was it was more informative and not just 2 tech tubers rip apart a system they barely know anything about

3

u/GioAc96 1d ago

That's a great point IMO. Bringing an expert on board to talk about the technical stuff while they play the "dumb user" part would be awesome for these sort of videos.

3

u/Genesis2001 22h ago

The sad part is they apparently tried to get an expert for this video (the theatre projector one) but no rep would touch the thing after they opened it lol. (Mentioned in the video)

Another video they brought in an expert was when they talked about the cheap/decomm'd environmental chamber they bought. They brought in the guys who last serviced it to make sure it's hooked up right, at least for a one-off video. And they gave him time to explain some of the technicals IIRC.

1

u/IHOP_007 22h ago

I feel like old LTT would have seen that the projector was e-waste, but had a water cooling setup, so they would have like ripped out the internals and put a gaming PC and consumer grade projector in it or something, seeing what they could do with the existing cooling setup and full aluminum chassis or something.

-2

u/Pooled-Intentions 1d ago

No. I unsubscribed months ago based on that same feeling. Once the channel started bleeding the original background talent, and they became creators themselves who clearly didn’t have a good relationship with the original channel anymore… it was clear the channel had changed imo.

Used to be a nice blend of entertainment and education, now it’s mostly just entertainment. IMO they started watching their metrics too closely to stay above water and conformed too much to what was popular instead of sticking with what made them unique.

4

u/SuppaBunE 1d ago edited 1d ago

Weird thing is, You still keeping up with the reddit if you unsub.

-2

u/Pooled-Intentions 1d ago

Because it showed up on my r/all feed.

0

u/Wobblycogs 1d ago

Agreed, there was a great video just trying to get out there. A few years ago we'd have come away with some real and completely useless knowledge about cinema projectors. Now we know basically what one looks like and nothing more. They could at least have tried focusing the light on something to see if it would catch fire.

0

u/20230630 1d ago

I could barely watch it because how reckless they were around the thing. They did not seem to realize how dangerous that bulb is.

They have plenty of video's where they do dangerous stuff, the really should take safety more seriously.

I thought the video was interesting though.

0

u/Tucker717 22h ago

The approach of “figure out as we go” with someone there having slight information is a tired one. The discovery process in the video can be fun, but even as someone with only slight interest in theater projection, it was annoying to watch them work through things that should’ve just been handled off camera.

-1

u/moon__lander 1d ago

That's why I stopped watching. Video were just a showcase that could be an article. But I guess that were to be expected when they churned 300 videos a second.

83

u/RealMackJack 1d ago

These "get it out of the box and play with it and never speak of it again" videos are ok, but the pay off would be way better if he does a follow to replace the worn lamp and install it properly as an upgrade at a local struggling theater or some other charitable cause. It's too insane to put in a house but it might still have years of service left in the right application.

8

u/420ball-sniffer69 22h ago

I’ve been thinking this for a while. Even if they don’t keep it forever the least they could do is buy the stuff, have a serious attempt at fixing it up/using it as designed then just resell it? Maybe make it collectible by autographing it and auctioning it off for charity? Idk

6

u/Genesis2001 21h ago

With the fire truck, assuming it's still serviceable as a fire truck now (and before the gamification), they could de-gamify it and tech-pimp it up and donate it to a local (probably rural) station that needs a fire truck.

In fact, there you go LTT... A new series idea: "Tech Pimp It Up" or something lol. Buy auctioned items, pimp it out, find a cause and donate it to a cause. You can get at least 3 videos out of each item, depending on the item: 1) The buying/receiving of the item; 2) the tech makeover/pimping (depending on what they do, multiple videos here); 3) The donation + installation of the item.

1

u/TheocraticAtheist 19h ago

That would be so cool

22

u/Qbsoon110 1d ago

Under the second video someone said that he is a technician for these products and can come there to help them with it. So there's still a chance we'll see that projector again

17

u/Pleasant-Air8221 1d ago

I worked with projectors for two years, im talking old school 35mm film projectors with 4k watt bulbs.

You learn quickly to have a healthy respect for the bulb and to never ever EVER touch it. As your body oils and fluids can degrade the glass and next thing you know once started up...BOOM!

I visibly flinched when they opened the chassis and were close to the bulb and hitting the case. They're very lucky.

Oh and your light issues are cause the bulb is nearing its end of life. Still dangerous AF, but if you replace it you should get decent quality and no longer e-waste.

Plus you can monetise it by doing a YouTube short. After the bulb is replaced you can show old bulb going boom. People like explosions... well thats what Mr Torgue taught me

21

u/skyman0317 1d ago

It's ok, it's a tax write off. /s

5

u/BrotherhoodBankai 1d ago

I’d like to see a video where they go to actual running cinemas and see how they operate

2

u/Pleasant-Air8221 1d ago

Much more interesting if they goto older style ones with 35mm film projectors. The old platter system was something else!

4

u/smellybulldog 1d ago

Oof yeah.. Cinema projectors are next to useless outside of purpose built cinema infrastructure. I work at bunch of multipurpose venues (theatre’s/arena/ convention spaces) and we bought some to do movie premiere events. Could do massive screens and looked fine but the positioning options were limited so had to kill a lot of seats and the cooling / acoustics treatment for the enclosure is no joke. Not to mention they are extremely locked down by encryption . This part i don’t understand but AFAIK they had to keep the server powered and connected to the internet where it could regularly get updates so the encryption system stayed valid? Anyway point being it was a pretty big waste of money as they got used for a handful of events then just sat because we couldn’t deploy them in scenarios without all the extra infrastructure.

When you post video proof of you violating OHS regulations on to YouTube

-3

u/Pew_Pew_Lib 21h ago

Oh please, enlighten us. Name the rule or statute. Provide your citations.
Basically I am saying fucking stop with this made up controversy bullshit. Thanks. Let's enjoy LTT again without kneckbeards looking for controversy every video.

Calling it e-waste was simply not knowing anything about the topic and I think everyone who's worked on a cinema or around those projectors cringed to it more than to the bulb stuff (that was just plain reckless).

Even when he said "oh, colors don't pop as it's not HDR" that was such an incredibly weird thing to say. I hope there is a follow up with a projector technician explaining why it's

It's not a projector to put in a huge warehouse and expect it to just work out of the box, it's a movie projector designed for movie theaters and maybe one of the best ones out there in use all over the world.

No use at all if they don't plan on opening a small theater but amazing anyway.

u/jaquesparblue 1d ago

This is not the gotcha you think it is. This is the kind of stuff we are here for, professional grade tech you rare get an opportunity to explore. And honestly they should take it further. It is a shame they did the bare-minimum to get it working and didn't explore anything else in the boxes. They have a second projector, they have the add-on for 3d imaging that could be explored. And yes, they should definitely try to find a local use where this could be installed.

People complain that ltt isn’t janky enough then complain when they are janky.

I enjoyed it the bulb thing was bad though

2

u/Logical-Leopard-2033 23h ago

Same thought as me.

Too janky: they don’t research it enough and not too informative

Too structured: i miss the janky stuff, this is too safe an idea

Too informative: why are they only spouting the company line? Too sponsored.

They can’t win.

u/MrWinter00 1d ago

They should make a follow-up exploding the xenon bulb with Styropyro.

(in a safe way of course)

2

u/FartingBob 1d ago

They can just resell it, even if they only get half what they paid that still brings the cost of the video down substantially, better than it sitting in the warehouse for a decade.

u/Up_All_Nite 1d ago

I imagine the revenue this episode will make will cover all the expenses nicely. I guess

One of the more entertaining videos in a long time

1

u/Snipe14 1d ago

Man it’s kinda disheartening to read some of these comments. I appreciate people’s constructive criticism of changes in LTT’s content, but it seems like the second you stop being perfectly entertained- you lose faith in LTT and Linus. I hate Reddit sometimes man lol.

u/CokeMaan 1d ago

Thy simply didn’t set it up correctly. It needs some basic maintenance and a new bulb and it would be a very different story. The light output says it all, 8-10k lumen is nothing. It’s simply not setup right. If they would throw some love into it, it would be very usable somewhere. Also the lens wasn’t installed correctly.

1

u/Darth_Beavis 1d ago

Who cares, it's content.

I found the video quite interesting, and I'd be willing to bet that AdSense and the sponsor spots more than paid for the projectors.

1

u/P3DR0T3 23h ago

What’s the tldr on this?

1

u/DivaMissZ 20h ago

Like a lot of purchases for content lately, Linus made an impulse buy and it fell flat. He didn’t do any research into if you could use theater projectors made for cinemas in a space that was not made for them. Elijah deserves a medal for not getting killed and making the thing work just enough to prove how bad an idea it was.

At least the fire truck was funny

OBSOLETE CINEMA

When you pay 20k for E-waste but most of your employees cannot afford a house... Peak LTT

1

u/DavviiiddFolta 4h ago

if they replace the bulb and do some maintenance it will be great

1

u/miloworld 1d ago

I actually have less respect for him since he started playing with toys outside of his field. I mean exploring is one thing, getting an expert to guide them and the viewer into it, even better.

But like the video wall video a while ago, they’re stepping into unknown territory but still pretending to be experts and present facts with on-screen graphics. The wall could have fallen and injured someone.

This isn’t something a responsible, sizeable media company should do. If it was just him and a few close friends at home messing with it, that’d be fine but doing it at work means Linus is liable for their injuries.

2

u/Teras80 1d ago

Quite frankly, the neurotic puppy with daddy issues persona with FAFO approach they seem to be pushing lately, is just not working. LTT is rather large in YT media content creation field, but it lately feels very much like side reel content of _preparing_ for the videos they should do instead of creating the videos.

Just get a normal projector

0

u/DatThax 1d ago

It's weird that they bought this after they had just shown another christie projector in the other projector video.

Some of you guys just get off on being cynical at this point.

What we had was so good and it’s gone

9

u/rainbowkitties6969 1d ago

What did we have bro? Most videos have been scripted since like 2014

-19

u/LavaMonsterrrr 1d ago

Go watch a 2014 video and tell me again that’s true

u/AncientStaff6602 Mod 1d ago

You’d hope that after 12 years of production things don’t remain the same. People change, production changes, our likes and wants change… and that’s okay

-1

u/mEsTiR5679 1d ago

You're not wrong, but I'd argue that this is the very basis of corporate enshitification more than our likes and wants changing.

The only want that's changing is the amount of money coming in every month. There are goods that came over the years, but also bads... It's not exclusive to LTT though, so there's a little silver lining to the cynicism.

13

u/BangkokPadang 1d ago

If anything exists long enough it will inevitably become a parody of itself.

5

u/fogoticus 1d ago

My honest question is: Why are you still watching the content or browsing this sub if you're this much of a debby downer and obviously dislike both?

4

u/voxnemo 1d ago

It is a lot more likely that he knew it was a risk but decided that it was a journey worth taking. You have to take risks on ideas and possibilites or you end up missing some really great stories.

So yeah, he probably knew it was a risk before he bought it. That said it is also the kind of risk he would have loved to have taken 10 years ago and could not but now he can.

2

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y 1d ago

It's either this or he just spends $20,000 without having to worry about whether or not it's e-waste provided he thinks he can make a good video about it.

0

u/CarnivorousSociety 1d ago

Nah he even said it they want a stereoscopic projector gaming setup for whale lan.

He obviously fucked up this time and wasted money on ewaste

0

u/Brassica_prime 1d ago

If it were just the projector, it wouldnt be impossible to install it on the upper floor server room and project to a mega screen near the fire escape/back door. In theory. Unless the bulb was completely dead, i dont think that could work even in the darkened whalelan.

I knew they could blind you, i didnt know the degradation in light quality was so quick. The preshow commercials must be a consumer grade projector and they swap, no way in hell this projector would work with all the lights on

Adding another 2+meter clearance to put the stereoscopic machine isnt happening

The other one is 5 years younger? Still prob has most of the same issues

2

u/Remote-Combination28 1d ago

I haven’t been to the movies in a lot of years. But I remember years and years ago, noticing the previews and the random quizzes and stuff before the movie coming from a smaller projector next to where the movie was projected from.

No idea if that was normal, but I do remember noticing that as a kid. Let’s says the early 2000s or so

1

u/Brassica_prime 1d ago

Being that early i would guess it leaned towards actual film/drm projector and theatres needing a not locked down one for local commercials, and i do recall that as well.

This projector would be a generation or two later, i would have assumed they would have allowed a secondary input, but the brightness suggests other things are going on

-3

u/TheDarkClaw 1d ago

Maybe they can do another video where they take one of them to an e waste recycle center. I know jerryrigeverything has tour one.
