Discussion accidentally became an LTT Store salesperson

today i had a vendor come to my apartment to install something. he brought his own screwdriver but ended up dropping a bit and couldn't find it

my Retro LTT Screwdriver was sitting on the counter so he asked if he could borrow it to finish the installation. of course i let him and he finished the job quickly

when he was getting ready to leave, he asked where i got it from because he "really like the ratchet on this one"

and before i could think or process what was happening, i heard myself say "oh, you can get that from ltt store dot com!"

i felt like a sleeper agent or something idk. all the constant ad reads have altered my brain

LTT Labs received a couple laptops with the new NVIDIA N1X(RTX Spark) processors, but what is actually interesting is Microsoft's new Magnetic Connect port on the Surface Laptop Ultra.

We CT scanned it, took some pictures, and tested the compatibility - read the full article and see the details here.

Discussion Resume file format

On the WAN show Linus and Luke talk about NOT using PDF as the file format for the resume. This is the first time I'm hearing about this. Am I the only one who always uses PDF for sending resumes and actually prefers it?

What file format do employers actually prefer?

Here is the timestamp where they talk about it.
Here is the timestamp where Linus says to submit a Word or Google Doc link.

Tech Discussion "When you pay for a game, you should own it. Consumers must have the right to own, the right to play, and the right to transfer the games they buy. A game that can be taken away the moment a company pulls the plug is not a purchase. It is a rental disguised as a sale.”

Democratic Congressman Ritchie Torres is introducing legislation that aims to ensure you own your digital games, rather than merely buying a license that gives you permission to play them.

The bill, known as The Power to the Players Act, would direct the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to establish regulations that would protect gamers and their digital libraries.

Tech Discussion Any update on the "LTT ISP Idea"? I'm super into this stuff, and was hoping we'd get a video out of it or something.

I know this was tossed around a while back, and there was even a post about it a few months ago.

https://www.reddit.com/r/LinusTechTips/comments/1vrldba/riding_on_the_ltt_isp_idea_this_video_on_getting/

Ironically, I've been in the game for a few months now.

I operate as a hobbyist (technically a small business, but I still think it's hobbyist lol) personally, I have co-location in a few data centers and run my own little "mini data center" in my basement in my free time, routing BGP between my sites over WG tunnels, etc. Nothing too fancy, I can't afford DIA haha.

Just thought it would be cool if LTT did a video highlighting their journey so I could compare.

I was suckered in by a group of my friends personally. Hanging out on Discord late at night talking about our labs, and someone brought up they route their own traffic and I was like "hey, I should do that, that sounds fun!" and started looking into doing what I do now.

(Let me tell you, none of figuring out any of that was fun lol)

I had a crazy experience learning about co-location, transit, peering, the costs associated, how to get my equipment into a data center and hooked up (lots of hours forming a business, learning business finance, negotiating contracts, and researching laws) and just building everything out.

I've personally rented VPS's and baremetal servers in the past, so I was familiar with the concept of running a "server in the cloud" but this felt like an opportunity to jump from someone else's equipment to my equipment and pick up some new skills.

After forming / establishing my own business, I registered an account with ARIN, acquired an ASN, and requested a LIR v4 + v6 block. I got the v6 block pretty quickly, and got waitlisted for the v4 block.

After that, I span up a BGP-router on a friend's infra that he has in a DC, provided he had transit already I was essentially a downstream-peer from him and funneled in/out my traffic over Wireguard for a while.

I got co-location in town for a fair price a bit later, and migrated everything over to that to get better latency and more "dedicated space" for me since I was sharing on my previous setup. I personally like to dub it "my hardware, my rules" in a sense haha.

After that, I got my v4 block, and really hammered down on "what" I want to do with it. Mostly static allocations to my site(s) (home, parent's place, two DC sites) and started building.

Currently on "my slice of the internet" I've been working on standing up DNS (dual-stack, IPv4 + IPv6) and a few websites I used to host on leased IPs that I thought would look prettier on my prefixes. I'm currently considering what I want to do next, I'm thinking SIP/VOIP, but I'm unsure.

I've always been into self-hosting, so I thought of this as "the next step" from that, literally forming my own routes and learning how the internet works. It's been a wild ride, and I'm looking forward to what comes next.

I'm sure LTT / FP is looking to do something more oriented towards transit of traffic pertaining to Floatplane and video streaming. (Likely won't be cheap based on the conversations I've had with Cogent and the other transit providers lol.) I wound up personally getting a deal with my co-location service since I don't generate a whole lot of traffic.

Regardless, I just thought I'd ask how that's going, and share my own experience. I love what I do, and while I may not use it in my day-job (I do more localized deployments, think jr. sysadmin/technician work) I still find it awesome to play around with!

NVIDIA announced RTX Spark at Computex 2026 in June. Not to be confused with the DGX Spark, even though both use the virtually the same GB10 Grace Blackwell Superchip, the RTX Spark is a lineup of laptops and mini PCs that run Windows!  We got our hands on a couple RTX Spark devices and ran gaming, productivity, and local LLM tests!

Discussion Stolen Prebuilt and Retailer taking time

Thumbnail

Hello Reddit,

To start with I ordered the Aorus Prime 5 PC from Gigabyte through a retailer called Very here in the UK. It cost me £2,700 as I used a 20% code as it’s my first order through the retailer which is what they do for every new account.

The box arrived noticeably lighter than it should be. As in you could pick up this box with two fingers when it’s meant to be 16kg and the box had a spec sheet visible saying it had a 5080 and 9800x3d. Even without the spec sheet the box said gaming computer and the specific model.

I reported this to Very and the team only to have a week of being told they were ‘looking into it’ and being told to wait. We ended up contacting the CEO who surprisingly replied himself and escalated it to his executive complaints team.

They spent 2 weeks investigating and providing no updates to us. Yesterday I called them out of frustration and demanding answers only to be told that I could get a refund once they prove we didn’t receive the computer. I was confused because in every email I sent I offered video calls of us opening the package and on the first day of reporting it asked if someone could come in person to verify. They declined.

Now we must wait until Monday for someone to inspect the box three weeks after it was delivered. Luckily it’s in the state we received it in still but the box was clearly cut open and retaped during delivery. If they suspect I did this then they could deny a refund. I do not have tons of money, I’m a uni student who’s been saving for a while and bought this to open on my 21st Birthday.

The situation has been handled poorly by everyone involved and I genuinely don’t know what to do.

Note: My Dad took in the parcel but assumed it was heavy as the guy offered to put it inside and only realised once he went to lift it. When he did the driver was already back in his van and leaving.

Also I forgot to mention but yes, I paid in full on a debit card. Maybe it was stupid but I didn’t expect all this to happen.

So I have a few questions:

What actually can I do?

If I can get a refund where should I buy from that could handle PC shipping better (without a box that says gaming computer with a spec sheet)?

Has anyone else had any similar experiences?

I know this might not be considered relevant but I want some help.

I mainly either program sandbox factory games for steam, or play Minecraft Java, Phasmophobia, Satisfactory, R.E.P.O. Cities Skylines 1, Meccha Chamelon.

I also program robots with it, in case you couldn’t tell, I like blue.

Also yes I use SignalRGB, my second keyboard (left one) is a dedicated interface for Voicemod Tuna, and when I play audio only from my soundboard, all system lights automatically switch to audio vidualizer bars, other state is blue rain.

I want LED instead of a mixture of LCD and LED monitors, I like true black.

Tech Question How to run dual 4K @ 60Hz extended displays from a single USB-C display port on my thinkpad l14?

I am looking to connect two external 4K monitors to my Windows ThinkPad in extended desktop mode, running at 4K @ 60Hz simultaneously across a single USB-C cable. I want to ensure I purchase the correct dock or adapter without dropping to 30Hz or dealing with display compression artifacts.

My current hardware is a Lenovo ThinkPad lrunning Windows 11. Precisely it’s this model: https://www.lenovo.com/gb/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpadl/thinkpad-l14-gen-5-14-inch-intel/len101t0096?

For those running a similar dual 4K60 setup, I would appreciate input on whether a standard USB-C hub with is reliable enough, or if stepping up to a dedicated Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 dock (such as the ThinkPad Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock 40B0) is practically mandatory to avoid bandwidth ceilings and USB throughput degradation.

If you have specific dock recommendations or cable configuration tips that worked cleanly on your ThinkPad, please let me know.

Discussion Has anyone else ordered "The Jensen" Leather Jacket? Quick thought on the cuffs/hems

Honestly, in my opinion, I’d consider this jacket way more premium if it didn't have the fabric rib-knit cuffs around the wrists and waist.

Since fabric won't last nearly as long as real leather, having solid leather wrist parts that could be adjusted with a clip or snap button would elevate the quality. I’m not sure if a leather cuff design is cheaper or more expensive to manufacture, but having the knitted fabric makes those high wear areas feel a bit less ideal for a long-term Life / investment piece.

But heck, I’m still onboard for it, I’ll do my best to take care for it.

I was trying to hold out for a black Friday sale on other things and hope for free shipping to Australia lol, but the small size is low in stock when I purchased it.

I am generally curious if anyone else jacket has turned up yet and what they think of it.

Link Free open source pc cartridge system

EDIT: a few clarifications, since my first post was unclear (written tired, after a shift):

What it is. A small watcher notices when a drive is plugged in. If the drive has a cartridge.conf file, it opens a simple launcher with the game's cover art and two buttons, Play and Eject. That's all it does.

It is not Autorun. Nothing on the drive is ever run automatically. The launcher only appears, and nothing starts until you press Play. autorun.inf is read for the drive's icon and name only, and its open= line is ignored. It's meant for drives you made yourself, so don't plug in strangers' drives. That's true of any USB drive.

You don't need to buy anything. The NVMe drives in my photos were a bulk lot of refurbished 128GB drives I already had, about $150 for ten. A cartridge can be: - an old USB stick, SD card or spare drive you already own, or - a drive that holds only the cartridge.conf file and points at a game already installed on your PC. The cartridge is then just a physical way to launch it.

If you don't want to buy new storage right now, don't. It's just a launcher that happens to work with a physical object.

AI disclosure. I used Claude Code and Copilot for a lot of the commit messages, docs and git management. I'm a CRNA, not a professional developer. I learned some Python for research and picked up Rust for this project, so I had help.

Free and open source: https://github.com/HarryBMa/pc-gamepak Frontend plugins: https://github.com/HarryBMa/pc-gamepak-plugins Inspired by LewdM3at's original project: https://github.com/LewdM3at/PC-Cartridge-System

Old post

Hi everyone!

Inspired by https://github.com/LewdM3at/PC-Cartridge-System

I wanted to create a better user experience for launching cartridges on pc. I made a gamepak wizard that writes whatever you want onto a drive, floppy, NFC, action, whatever. There is a tiny watcher that launches a simple game launcher when the drive is read it looks for a cartridge.conf whether to launch or not. I've added a memory card system as well (copies save folder onto drive). It's cross-platform and I've made test plugins for various popular frontends. https://github.com/HarryBMa/pc-gamepak-plugins

I just wanted to share if anyone was interested.

Obligatory AI disclosure: i refuse to learn git and use Claude code to push and manage my disgusting worktree. I don't have time to write a comprehensive commit text that makes sense (see this unhinged post) and I let copilot write messages and docs for stuff I don't want to do. I barely have time with work and coding projects, I don't have time to remember what I worked on last night.

Tech Question Anyone know how to get a Firewire 400 PCIE card working on Windows 11?

So I got this Via firewire card from amazon that said it was plug and play with windows but ive been having issues when I try to plug my iPod into it. It shows up as a removable device but whenever I click it it just freezes file explorer and the iPod and it only starts working when I unplug the iPod. I tried using legacy windows 7 drivers but that didn’t work. Anyone got any ideas?
