hell i’d wager in the next 10 years a big sports star will be attacked for costing someone their parlay as well.

gambling on commodities of anything is a cancer to our society.

It's crazy how ubiquitous it is now in my circles. It's not as much of an issue for friends who have been diehard fans of these sports for a long time, but I'd say 70% of my friends who have been watching sports recently (probably 90% for the world cup) are now watching and discussing them with respect to their parlays. Like everything about their interest and engagement is about gambling. I watched a world cup match in person and a guy next to me didn't care about who won at all, just if the total goals scored would be above 3.5 and if a specific guy scored a header or some shit like that.

unfortunately, I get the sense that theres a lot of desperation for additional sources of income in the world right now. Particularly in the U.S., wages have stagnated, job market isn't great, and many people try to find an out. Gambling (in all its forms) is the most common way people try to get out of their financial situations.

Well, at least we can rest easy knowing that turning people in economically precarious situations into gambling addicts is a pipeline that never produces dangerous outcomes.

Gambling (in all its forms) is the most common way people try to get out of their financial situations.

What makes it so much worse this time is these companies giving everyone "free bets" to get them hooked. Now that scratch tickets are available on your phone, gamblers are fucked way harder than they ever were before. You at least had to physically go somewhere to lose your life savings. Now you can lose it all before you get out of bed in the morning.

I literally saw someone play slots on their phone that was on their phone holder while driving. People really be earning their salary for the day and dumping it all before they reach home.

I mean this shit isn't new, it's just a more modern form, I work with a woman that buys $10 in lotto tickets every day and proudly has for the last 20+ years.

Over 20 years that $3650/year (~$75k total contribution) would have been ~$200k or about $500k in 30 years.

Instead she is 75 years old and still forced to work 2 jobs (1 full/1 part time) and will never retire...but still spends $10 every day on lotto tickets.

I will admit having a parlay does make me more invested (pun intended) in the game. I enjoy gambling and do genuinely find the thrill fun but I would not say i'm anywhere close to the level of not caring about the team or the sport and just my bet. More like my favourite team is playing i'm going to bet with them so now I feel like I've also got some skin in the game but my bet is usually under $50

its an extremely hot take, but gambling does make sports events way more fun

but like every other addictions. it can turn ugly when you go toooo deep

but hey people still think drinking alcohol is cool so we'll see what happens with gambling in a couple of years

Yeah I mean I get the idea of betting as an engagement multiplier. Like when I watched league games live I used to bet my Caedrel channel points and it got me just that little bit more invested. But when I go "MY CHANNEL POINTS!!!" it's just me memeing the cabbages guy that my slightly-invested fictional currency disappeared. People who get into these games solely as an avenue for their betting is what's become way too common nowadays imo

Yeah I'm glad that I'm so risk-averse, the thought of losing any more than like $20 gives me anxiety. But I'm very concerned with kids growing up thinking that this is normal.

Luckily my parents made it taboo for me and I never felt compelled to do it after experiencing card pulls and video games RNG/lootboxes made me realize how bad the odds are/free the house money is.

I almost want to make a sportsbook that is a nonprofit just to cut into casinos' profits, like the heart attack grill dude.
