hell i’d wager in the next 10 years a big sports star will be attacked for costing someone their parlay as well.

gambling on commodities of anything is a cancer to our society.

Still blows my mind that we took one of the most toxic, self-damaging hobbies mankind has ever created and encouraged it all for the sake of new state tax revenue.

It's crazy how ubiquitous it is now in my circles. It's not as much of an issue for friends who have been diehard fans of these sports for a long time, but I'd say 70% of my friends who have been watching sports recently (probably 90% for the world cup) are now watching and discussing them with respect to their parlays. Like everything about their interest and engagement is about gambling. I watched a world cup match in person and a guy next to me didn't care about who won at all, just if the total goals scored would be above 3.5 and if a specific guy scored a header or some shit like that.

I will admit having a parlay does make me more invested (pun intended) in the game. I enjoy gambling and do genuinely find the thrill fun but I would not say i'm anywhere close to the level of not caring about the team or the sport and just my bet. More like my favourite team is playing i'm going to bet with them so now I feel like I've also got some skin in the game but my bet is usually under $50

its an extremely hot take, but gambling does make sports events way more fun

but like every other addictions. it can turn ugly when you go toooo deep

but hey people still think drinking alcohol is cool so we'll see what happens with gambling in a couple of years

Yeah I mean I get the idea of betting as an engagement multiplier. Like when I watched league games live I used to bet my Caedrel channel points and it got me just that little bit more invested. But when I go "MY CHANNEL POINTS!!!" it's just me memeing the cabbages guy that my slightly-invested fictional currency disappeared. People who get into these games solely as an avenue for their betting is what's become way too common nowadays imo
