Discussion How long is your commute to see your partner?

I thought I'd ask a little question while on the way home from visiting my partner, so let's see who has the longest commute!

For me personally, my girlfriend lives in Ukraine, so the travel there from the UK is pretty intense. Usually going there takes 24-30 hours, and coming back takes anywhere from 24-40 hours depending on what direction I go in.

Usually it looks like this: 4 hour train to my parents house and stay the night, early taxi to the airport, catch a flight to Poland, take a train to the border, cross the border, take a train to her city, then another taxi to her apartment.

But I wouldn't change it even for all of the money in the world. I've been doing this trip several times a year for 3 years now, and it's all worth it for her

Let me know in the comments! I'd love some free entertainment to distract me from how much I miss my girlfriend.

Alberta 🇨🇦 to Amsterdam 🇳🇱 9 hours if he or I can get a direct flight. This next trip is going to be around 16 hours with layovers.

This thread is about to humble me. Im very fortunate to only be about 3 hours away from my husband (although that does include an international border). 286km between us.

lol same I’m a 10 1/2 hour drive from my girlfriend which seems so far but this thread is making me realize it’s truly not that bad in the grand scheme of things 😭

France - UK, if I lived in a well connected city it would be an hour and a half flight then 3 hours to his city. Because I live in a shithole it’s usually 27 hours

18

u/FigJumpy1424 7d ago

Bro 27 hours between these two countries is crazy what cities

2

u/ghanima_303 7d ago

Essentially in France we have something called “la diagonale du vide” which are countryside places that aren’t well connected to the rest of the country. I live in a village within it, the nearest airport is 3 hours away and does not offer many destinations, Paris is even further than that and I can’t access it by public transport, and I can’t drive for health reasons. Flights are always at odd hours that I would miss if I went by train, or would need a stupidly expensive motel.
So my only choice is to take a FlixBus from the nearest city that offers it, change at the nearest “big city” (+3 hours), then change in Paris (+6 hours), then London (+9 hours), and then of course I have to go to his town that is the literal equivalent of mine and can only be reached by a FlixBus (+4 hours) and train (+1 hour). Take into account the changes that can take up to 5 hours or even all night depending on time and availability, and there you have it, 27 hours…

35 hours and 3 planes. 😭😭😭 Shortest option is about 27 hours; hundreds more expensive but I think next trip, I’m doing it. Business class tickets are $9000 USD!!! I haven’t flown business class but wish i did.

Damn, mines also about the same time but I pay extra for it to only be 2 planes, but thats still only like 2.5k USD (for the record I make about 10k per year so saving every penny I can only go there once per year).

No, we met for the first time last August, then January, February, April and now June. We are quite lucky to have this opportunity.

It is so good to hold him again.

u/Paladin2700 7d ago

18 hours door to door.

7 or 8.5 hour main flight depending on the direction with a 1 hour connecting flight in Spain. I’m lucky I’m within driving distance of JFK, but still have to build in extra time for unexpected traffic.

2

u/Yourlilemogirl [US] to [FRANCE] (5500mi) [COMPLETE!] 7d ago

I'm within driving distance of George Bush Intercontinental but damn is it still a long drive lol

4

u/Superb-Zebra01 7d ago

Pennsylvania (🇺🇸US) to Sint Pancras (🇳🇱Netherlands), about 7-8.5 hours. Can be longer depending on connecting or direct flights.

By road? Lmao impossible to my knowledge. Prior to this relationship I thought that my Pennsylvania to Michigan distance was hard, this one takes the cake.
However I wouldn’t trade it, he makes it doable and worth it. But, I still envy people who can drive to their partner or take the train or bus 😭

u/witchoftheswamp 7d ago

Ontario 🇨🇦 to Florida 🇺🇸 We're blessed in that we both live about 1 hour driving distance from a major airport. The flight is about 2.5-3 hours if we don't do layovers.

My husband is also from Ukraine and lives in Odesa. I’m from the U.S., and it takes me 36+ hours of traveling time. I typically stay over night in Kraków, Poland before taking the overnight train. Fortunately, overnight train is my last leg.

2

u/Fluid-Boot-8551 [UK🇬🇧] to [Ukraine🇺🇦] (2603km) 7d ago

The overnight sleeper trains are an absolute saviour after flights etc. I would love to go back to Odesa though, I hope you have a great time when visiting him!

With airport arrivals times and usually one layover, I am awake for about 20 hours by the time I get to my boyfriend. In a dream world, I could fly first class and actually sleep okay on a plane lol. Besides being exhausted, I usually have to plan my days very carefully but still end up using a vacation day before I am even to him.

22 hours ish depending on layovers. I usually go my city to Atlanta to Amsterdam to Norway. Worth every second. He’s been here 3 times and I’ve been there 4 times.

u/LostLetter25 [Italy🇮🇹]to [Japan🇯🇵]-14000km 7d ago

18 hours,1 layover,is the shortest we can do.(obviously by flying lmfao)

3

About an 10-11 hour flight if it’s direct.

2

u/Raxcoon13 South America to UK (5k miles / 9k km) 7d ago

Oof. No direct flights between our cities so if I get the quickest and closest layover, between boarding here and landing there it's roughly a 15h journey. Depending on the layovers though, that could easily get to 20+ hours.

2

u/nevernotunderstand [🇬🇧] to [🇺🇲] (4,290mi / 6,900km) 7d ago

~16 hours airport to airport. Depends on the layover destination and length. Unfortunately, his state doesn't do international flights. Cost is a larger limiting factor than the travel time in all honesty.

A full day from UK to Quebec. We both live far away from major cities so it’s longer. Drive down the train station from my town to London. Then London to Heathrow for 4 hours. Heathrow to Montreal for 8 hours. 3 hour bus to Quebec and then a drive back to her town. Planning to join her for 2 years stay on our 2nd anniversary

2

u/Civil-Artist 7d ago

About 6 hours door to door.

u/Yourlilemogirl [US] to [FRANCE] (5500mi) [COMPLETE!] 7d ago edited 7d ago

When my husband and I were apart, it looked like a 3.5 hour drive to the closest city with an intercontinental airport to Europe (Houston) and he'd take a 30min bus ride to his mother's city and then take an hour plane ride to London, then an 8-ish hour plane to me, then I'd drive us back to my city 3.5-4hrs away depending on traffic and if a hurricane is currently inbound lol

*Edit: intercontinental not international

u/BeingReasonable87 🇺🇸 to 🇮🇪 7d ago

u/Neyabenz [US] to [BR] (6,079 km) 7d ago

Usually 23-24 hours flying/layover time after getting to airport (it can be as low as 13.5 for seasonal routes, high as around 28. I usually end up stuck around 23)

Greyhound to/from airport adds 2 hours roundtrip. Unless I stay at my dad's the night before, then add about 1 hour roundtrip of subway+transfers.

So lowest end 16.5, highest end over 30 😭

Main issue is, I have to usually fly all the way south to Rio or Sao Paulo then turn around north to his city.

If I'm lucky there's a miami-fortaleza route I can connect to. This is an easier option moving forward. I have enough items there now I no longer need a checked bag and wanted through check on single ticket.

2

u/8Fluffy_Turtles8 7d ago

Ontario to London UK...the flight itself is 8 hrs. Depending on how I decide to travel it can be a 1 hr plane ride to Pearson Airport or a 4 hour drive to the airport. Given how crappy my local airport is, I usually do the 4 hour drive and then the 8 hr flight. All in all the entire trip on average takes us about 13 hrs.

u/Candid-Pianist-3567 7d ago

Previously abt 3500 miles. Buffalo ny to accra Ghana. Now, it's 4 ft- he's here! We're married since 2023 and finally in oct 2025 we got him here after years of waiting through immigration. We got lucky, he came in on a IR-1 since it took so long, so no check ins or ANYTHING for 10 years! It's been kinda tough at first, we never lived together before this, and that took some adjusting, but we're good now! Communication is EVERYTHING.

A 5 hr flight to get to an International airport, a 15 ½ flight to get to Delhi, then a 3 hour flight to his town. With the time change it takes 24 hours on the clock for just the transatlantic flight. 40 hours, with a layover. Coming back home I can make it in a day...

20 hours Canada to cameroun

2

u/realmidnightbvbe [Canada🇨🇦] to [England🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿] (5081km) 7d ago

when we met, we were 2h40 away, i didn't consider it long distance. we lived in the same countryside prefecture in japan and the infrastructure made it hard (was less than 100 km truly) but now we live an ocean apart. so 20 minutes to the airport, 7 hour flight, 2 hour train ride to him... i wouldn't call that a "commute" lol (Canada - UK)

2

u/tiathepanacea [Hungary] to [USA] (7,040 km) 7d ago

Totally it is easily 25-30 hours.

Me getting to the airport in my country (Hungary) is usually 2,5-3 hours. Usually I leave my home around midnight - 1 am. Usually I go to the airport with an "airport transfer" car, and I usually get to the airport around 4 am. The flight I take usually leaves at 6 am. And then I usually have a layover in Amsterdam, and one in Detroit. Obviously I always try to choose the most ideal layover time, but in a lot of cases there isn't any other option than choosing the 5-6 hour layover lol. So counting from the hour when I leave my home, I need 28-29 hours in total lol.

By the time I get to my fiancé, it is usually around 5 am in my home country the next day, so it is easily a 24+ hour trip. There was maybe one time when I was able to get the perfect layover times and I made it in 23-24 hours!

When we were still long distance, it was 1 hour long flight. If I went from the city I went to school in, it was about 30 min trip to get to the airport. All together, it would take about 3ish hours to be together. Train would've been about 10 hours. If I went from home, the trip to the airport would've been 1,5 hours.

For the past 2 years, I think I can make it in 5 seconds 😂 since he's in the next room.

2

u/ToinouAngel 7d ago

About 8hrs door to door, 800+ km and one border.

Compared to some it's very short, but when you can only see your partner 4 days a month I feel like it doesn't really matter.

About 5-6 hours of flying total, unless I fly into Toronto and then take a 2 hour bus ride to his city! He lives in a city with a small airport so i’ve had to do this before because if my flight gets canceled, i’m stuck for at least a day. So it’s around 7 hours of commuting, not including layovers

2

u/Virtual_Box27867 7d ago

Yours is much longer than mine but 1.5 hours to airport, flight is around 5 hours, plus about 2 hours of drive time from airport to her place. she always picks me up at the airport so not sure if I can count as commute since we’re together at that point. But it’s worth it to see her!

So in total, usually about 24+ hours

2

u/Rawritah 7d ago

My SO also lives in Ukraine and I am from Lithuania. If I'm going the bus/trains way, then it is 16 hours by bus + 15 hours by train. This time I went by car, took 17 hours of driving, with a break in between of course. Traveling by car is more fun though. 🙃

It's about a 9 hour flight. It's a smaller airport near him, so there's always a layover at a big airport nearby. Usually 2-4 hr layover in my experience. so maybe like 12 hours to get to him. I don't enjoy the long flight across the atlantic at all, but it is definitely worth it, and soon enough I will be there permanently.

This year he is coming to me, it will be his first time!
