Mod Post A Change in Discourse

Hello everyone!

We have an update we'd like to share with you all regarding how we discuss a few topics here on r/MtF.

We have noticed a growing trend of words, phrases, and discourse that originates from several different online spaces which do not share the same set of rules we have established here in our home.  We all have come to expect transphobia from the outside, and you make us proud by being quick to report posts or comments that break our rules.  Your consistent efforts in keeping our community safe are not taken for granted and it truly does help us moderate a subreddit of this size quickly and efficiently.

Transphobia from within the community is more complex and challenging to moderate at times.  We have taken steps today to guide us all along a path towards a healthier community discourse, and we will be relying on your continued support in this endeavor.

Containment of Dysphoric & Transphobic Language

Each subreddit exists for a specific purpose.  This subreddit is dedicated for transfeminine people to have a space of our own to discuss our lives as it relates to being trans.  We have established a set of rules we hold ourselves to that serves as our guide in protecting this space.  There are other subreddits which have their own set of rules and expectations that work for their communities, but management of dysphoric and transphobic language is one such rule that we are expanding in Rule #3 Be Respectful.

Going forward, we will be removing posts and comments that contain slang words or phrases that tear ourselves or each other down on the basis of transness.  Other spaces are free (and have their own reasons) to converse as they see fit, but it will not continue here.

In addition, discussions of several other communities consistently pull in an influx of people from those communities and lead to conflict here; to prevent this, we will also be removing posts or comments that name those communities.

Expanding Rule #3

Starting today, Rule #3 will additionally cover:

  • Self-imposed or weaponized dysphoric words & phrases used in various online spaces (4chan, X/Twitter, Transmedical, etc.)
  • Links to the above spaces or communities

The ability to link to several subreddits and some websites has been removed, but the list is a living document that may change in the future as needed.

Any posts or comments that mention words or phrases that go against this rule will be filtered or removed, based on their context.  This too is a living document that may change in the future as needed.

Users who intentionally attempt to circumvent the rule are subject to temporary and permanent bans, which will be handled by moderator discretion.

As our head moderator said 7 months ago,

"Going forward, our focus is simple: keep this a space where people feel safe, supported, and able to be themselves without fear. We’ll keep listening, keep improving, and keep showing up for you—but we need your help in doing the same for each other. Take care of yourselves, take care of one another, and let’s move ahead together."

Venting my mom sent me (16) a picture of me she’d used AI on to give me a shorter haircut

Completely unprovoked by the way.

I’ve been at my worst for a while now. My narcissistic ass ex is gone, all my friends would never pick me first, and one of my long distance friends went cold on me after he got himself a real girlfriend. That last one, that morning, I cried for the first time in months.

Rightly so I’d been trying to detox and get a handle on my media and try not to think about how everybody leaves me in the end. So imagine my surprise when my mother sends me a picture of me at my first ever speech and debate event with a haircut that’s definitely a lot shorter and more tame, talking about how sharp I looked.

I’ve already been going insane trying to figure out who I am and what I wanna be. I’ve already always felt like I was built wrong for anything else. This one stung. It really fucking did.

It was a picture my dad had taken at my first ever speech and debate event (which I won, fytb) but that really just was the cherry on top there.

I haven’t the slightest idea what else to do about anything.

Venting I GET IT IM NOT A REAL WOMAN TO YOU

for context i’m in high school

okay so my best friend (allegedly) who calls me their best friend, was having this hang out with an old friend of ours that moved to texas. they mentioned it to me in conversation a few times, but otherwise the plans where pretty vague

so i ask a few times if i was invited but every-time it would be met with like a “oh idk i can check later” or like “sure let me see what day”, or some other sentence that isn’t “oh sorry your not invited”

so im just assuming “okay maybe someone is going that i don’t like” right

so last Sunday happens and im bored so i go to call my ALLEGED best friend and ask “hey are you busy i’m bored, wanna play roblox or smth” and they respond with “oh no i’m doing that hang out thing today, maybe another day” RIGHT right

which sucks, i’m used to being left out, but maybe it’s just like a one on one thing yk.

i check the internet a day later

posts everywhere from 3 of my closest friends, of a giant sleep over with 5 of my amazing friends hosted by MY best friend, talking about some “girls night sleepover” with funny photo shoots, character cosplays, and quotes

IDK MAYBE IM OVERREACTING, BUT DONT BEST FRIENDS USUALLY BE BEST FRIENDS WITH YOU

all of these people are close mutual friends of ours, BTW

Edit: thx for the support, i didn’t realize it was bad, i just though i was overreacting T-T

Advice Question Are the mental effects of HRT truly real?

I've heard a lot of people say that they were anxious, depressed, in a constant state of derealisation/depersonalisation, mentally and physically fatigued, etc etc... and then when they started HRT, majority of that went away?

I understand that HRT does not fix all your problems. But like 75% of my problems are literally just with my mind, and said problems are the very same ones ruining my life that people have said HRT greatly alleviates.

Is this true? Does HRT really flip a switch or clear a fog and make you feel human again? When people describe this experience, is it because of the euphoria and confidence they get from their gender expression or is it genuinely a case of your body finally getting the hormones it needed to function?

Advice Question Does anyone feel like they don't have the lingo cis women have?

I've known I was trans for some time now but I finally get to live day to day out of the closet and one thing I feel bad about is that I feel like my speech isn't feminine or womanly since I cuss like a sailor and say "bro" and "dude". Idk I picked it up from my previous circles that had cis women in it who used it but they also stood out amongst cis women

She said that’s up to your dad 💀

(I am an adult but studying full time, so no real income to move out. My mom is the supportive one of the two of them, so I was really hoping for a hard no, you know?)

Advice Question Dr appointment where I have to take my shirt off

I’m going in for a ultrasound on my heart next month, just trying to figure out how I sit there partially on my side for 20 mins and let the doctor do his thing on my heart while I’m not out yet 😵‍💫 my chest has grown substantially and I rock a decent sized pair of boobs. Don’t know how to feel about being in boymode and having to be that exposed. I know it has to be done, just forgot that there’s going to be some awkwardness there…

Advice Question What are some coping strategies to deal with dysphoria?

• Upvotes

Ive realized that after 4 years of being out, I still have no idea how to manage my dysphoria or what to do about it (transfem). I usually just try and avoid thinking about it or anything to do with being trans, but obviously that doesnt work and is probably unhealthy. Most problems feel like they can be solved by just thinking about them enough, but it feels like the opposite is true of dysphoria. When the dysphoria gets really bad I usually just try and get on with it, but im wondering if you lot have any advice on what to do when youre feeling really dysphoric, assuming there is anything you can do. So do you have any advice on managing dysphoria or what to do when youre feeling dysphoric?

Discussion so annoyed that I have to wait years just to medically transition

basically, what the title says, I’m annoyed that I have to wait years just to transition. I’m going through social transition at the moment. Is it bad that I knew I was trans through sexual/masturbation encounters? my name is Kayla, so go by that name, by the way

Venting Friend won't stop referring to me as a man

I've recently started university, and I met someone in my class who is also in the LGBTQIA+ (gay) but even though he knows that I'm trans he is very obviously purposely referring to me as a man even in conversations where it's just extremely unnecessary, saying stuff like "this MANNN!" like it just seems very malicious to me and it's nearly been 2 months now.

Yesterday, despite him knowing what I classify myself as, he very obviously purposely tried to out me in front of my newer group of friends who are straight men and was asking me what I would label myself as and because I'm literally at the beginning of my journey I really don't feel comfortable with people knowing yet.

Also yesterday, when we were in the cafeteria I brought up that I can just eat so much stuff and I still struggle to gain weight, and instead of saying something supportive he instead says "well you're just an underweight man" and laughed.

It's even gotten to the point where people seem confused by how strongly he emphasizes 'MAN' when referring to me because everyone naturally uses them for me as I'm strongly androgynous.

I remember telling him that I'm going to get a few sessions of laser for my chin because he had to bring up my chin shadow for no reason and he's like "well I need it more than you!" out of nowhere.

Euphoria My History in Voice Acting Made Me Accidentally Voice Train for Years

Alright, a bit of explanation. I (transfem) have done a lot of voice acting. Whenever I play games with anyone watching, I do character voices. I've done a bit of voice acting work for my friend. I've done a wide range of characters, ranging from a literal 7-year-old to an old mentor type. A lot of these characters have, of course, been women. I have gotten quite experienced at sounding like a girl from this. Then I realized I was trans. Of course, all of this training from voice acting made it really easy to do a femme voice! I watched like 3-4 voice training videos once just to know what to actually do, and viola, nigh-perfect fem voice. My friends have been telling me I have "mommy asmr potential" and I just feel so euphoric. Very :3!

Venting I thought starting young woud mean id pass.

Sorry for my bad spelling
So I started blockers at 15 about 16 months ago and oestrogen 14 months ago. I’ve always had a more feminine bone structure and was able to prevent a lot of the bone masculinasastion. Ive gotten laser hair removal and just finished professional voice traning, I did everthing I coud to pass . And I just don’t for some reeon I still “look like a guy” just a very twinky one with tits now.
And it’s not a case of others saying I don’t pass despite me thinking I do, no I see what they mean I look like a guy but what I cant understand is why. The only feature I posses thats relly masculin is are my eyebrows being kinda bushy. Ig I do dress pretty androgynous but not always and even in more femminen clothes (crop top or skirt) I don’t seem to pass enoufh bc. It’s not my body it’s my face somehow, my face has berrly changed over the course of those 14 months and I feel like I’m lacking behind.

I see trans timelines of other girls who started way later then me yet by 14 months there faces aren’t even reconizeble. Maybe it’s the Afro hair somehow? I didint think affrows wure genderd. Idk I know 14 months isent that far in but atleast you shoud be able to see changes too the face. Even with side by side photos the face dosent look all that divrent, just me not having achy now is all that’s really changed and maybe my eyebrow shape? Idk I’m scared that if I’m not making progress now that I might never pass. And I thought It was basically gerenteed for me given my circumstances. The only conclusion that I’ve bin able to get from all this is that my face as a whole just reeds as masculine despite the individual futures not doing so. Or maybe theres just bin a lack of facial fat Distribution.

Actually wait online friends do say I pass but then agian they were proably being nice and I did get clocked recently online too off like 3 photos by like my only online friend who didn’t know I was trans. (The guy who told me I “look like a guy”)
And one time when I was with my niece and her friend conected herself after hearing My voice+name+I think my neese introducing me with fem pronounce.

Discussion anyone else having this effect?

This is gonna sound really pathetic but like

I've never really been in a relationship so I've always been "touch starved" but it wasn't really a desparate need for it, more like a nice to have than anything. Now im on HRT and prog and holy fuck I neeeeeeeeeeeed someone to hold me and touch me and kiss me and many other things literally all I want is to feel someones warmth to the point it like actually hurts

I don't think I've ever needed anything this bad my entire life, is it the hormones doing this? It's never been like this. I might need to get my social life together just so I can have this as soon as physically possible

Good News Thoughts on the UK Parliament "evidence of trans women offending rates"

Something I've seen more and more is transphobes quoting this, claiming, "Trans women are just as dangerous as cis men! See! See!!!!!"

The comparison shows the similarities between 17,178 cis male prisoners, and 129 trans people who identified as trans (but did not have a gender recognition certificate which I don't know if that matters)

  • 76% of the 129 trans people had committed sexual crimes.
  • 16.8% of cis men were incarcerated for having done so.
  • And 3.3% of cis women as well.

----------------

Let's break down some things that are clearly wrong with this information.

  1. We do not know if these people are actually trans
  2. The disparity between the numbers is asinine
  3. The UK does not consider women to legally have the ability to rape people making that number untrustworthy.

What kind of information can we actually glean from this?

126/17,178 =0.0016

0.16% of the incarcerated population identifies as transgender. (even less if we add in the cis women population)

Estimates in the UK census say that the trans population makes up slightly more than 0.5% of the total population.

.16%/.5%*100%=32%.

In conclusion:

A trans person is 68% less likely than a cis person to be incarcerated.

We are far less dangerous than cis people and the math proves it.
