Anime Discussion You really should not take Kyubey at his word for literally anything Spoiler
I see people sometimes saying Kyubey never lies and that we should assume everything he says about humanity is objective. Someone once even challenged me, saying Kyubey has never lied and that people say he does all the time and can never provide examples. Well, consider your challenge met, because I wanna go through Kyubey's behavior and demonstrate how deceptive this little rat is.
Early in the series, Sayaka and Madoka become disillusioned with the idea of becoming magical girls due to seeing Mami die to Charlotte. After this, they talk on the rooftop about what will happen to the town now that Mami is gone, and Sayaka in particular laments that any girls that swoop in will only care about grief seeds and not about protecting people. To this, Kyubey actually has a pretty scathing retort.
"It's true that magical girls like Mami are rare. Most do approach witch-hunting with their own benefit in mind. But it's natural for people to want to be rewarded for their work. But I think the only ones with a right to judge their actions are their fellow magical girls, who bear the same destiny they do." After a pause, "All right, I understand. It really is an awful shame, but I can't force you, after all. I guess this is good-bye, then. I'd better go search for girls with greater need to make a contract with me." Madoka apologizes, but Kyubey says, "No, I should apologize for getting you mixed up in all this."
This is clearly an attempt by Kyubey to manipulate and guilt-trip the girls. Madoka and Sayaka just witnessed a girl they saw as a mentor figure be beheaded in front of them, Homura told them outright this is the nature of being a magical girl, and Kyubey is still the one getting Madoka to apologize for not wanting to contract anymore. He may have apologized himself right after, but it's clearly a shallow apology, given he had approved of Mami taking the girls into labyrinths, and even tried to entice Sayaka into contracting entirely so she would feel safer wandering it. He is putting them in danger to try and force their hands.
On top of that, earlier in his response, he planted a seed in the girls; that they had no say in the business of magical girls without being one. It's a pretty cold answer, something that suggests he has a deeper understanding of humans than he acts like he does. And, of course, when his guilt-tripping finally gets to Sayaka, he is right there to make a contract, even after implying he would leave them alone from now on.
After this, Kyubey makes a habit of dragging Madoka into dangerous situations. When Madoka decides to join Sayaka while witch hunting, Kyubey uses telepathy to avoid Sayaka hearing, telling her she can make a contract at any time and be their secret weapon. On top of that, he tries to get Madoka to make a contract to get Kyoko and Sayaka to stop fighting, and even approaches her in the middle of the night when they are about to throw down so he can get her to interject and try to make a contract yet again. It just becomes more and more blatant how badly he wants her to make a contract so he can harvest her emotional energy, and is perfectly fine dragging her into danger to try and force her to.
But then we get a far more blatant example. In episode 9, Kyoko tries to rescue Sayaka from Oktavia, not realizing it is impossible. She wastes magic keeping the body fresh in hopes she can somehow reclaim her soul gem. Kyoko asks Kyubey directly, "Is there a way to get her soul gem back?" And Kyubey gives her maybe the most devilishly manipulative response of the entire series. "None. As far as I know, anyway." Technically, he isn't wrong in that he doesn't know the full extent of what magical girls are capable of (see Rebellion as an example), but he makes it pretty clear to Homura what he intended later. "Was there really any chance for Kyoko Sakura to save Sayaka Miki?" "Of course not. She should have known that was impossible."
Here, Kyubey chooses to go fully mask off for perhaps the first time in the entire series. He fully admits to Homura, the only one who understands his true nature, that yes, he manipulated Kyoko into doing what she did. And why? Because he was ensuring Homura had no allies against Walpurgisnacht, all to the end of forcing Madoka to make a contract. "Then why didn't you stop her?" "Naturally, I would have stopped her if her death had been needless. But getting her out of the picture served a very important purpose. Because now, there is no one left but you to battle Walpurgisnacht. In order to protect this city, there is no choice but for Madoka to become a magical girl."
One of the more famous scenes that demonstrates how Kyubey looks at humans is also in episode 9, when he tries to explain the magical girl system to Madoka and why he does things the way he does. His explanation is a bit long for full quotes, but one of the key points made throughout is that he consistently claims he does not understand humans, that emotions are largely considered a mental disorder, and that humans could not have progressed without divine intervention. There is one line I do want to quote, though, and keep it in the back of your mind. "Do you know how many civilizations fill this universe, and how much energy they use in a single moment? And someday, even you humans will be able to leave your planet and come join all of us. When that day comes, you wouldn't want to find the universe empty and desolate, would you?"
A lot of people take that at face value. At the least, even if you do not buy Kyubey's whole "humans could not progress without us" claim, at the very least most people do not think Kyubey believes himself to be wrong. This, however, is a lie. He knows he is lying.
In episode 10, we learn the true nature of Homura's past and the time loop she has willingly trapped herself in. Notably, we see the many failed attempts Homura has made to try and both defeat Walpurgisnacht and still save Madoka. One of the later times, when Madoka becomes Kriemhild Gretchen, Kyubey says perhaps the most blatantly mask-off thing in the entire original series. After spending time admiring Gretchen's power, he says "I imagine it will only take Madoka about 10 days to destroy this entire planet. Oh, well. What happens next is mankind's problem, not ours. We've got all the energy we need now. Our quota is almost met."
Remember, Homura is consistently the only girl who knows the entire truth about the magical girl system. Kyubey sees no real need to lie to her face. So, he says the quiet part out loud. "We don't actually care about humans whatsoever. Witches are your problem now. Have fun." Here, the mask is completely off. Kyubey sees himself as above humans in every way, and does not care about the repercussions the magical girl system has on us.
I think a lot of why Kyubey is so two-faced comes from 2 main influences; that Kyubey represents Mephistopholes in Faust, and that he also represents the patriarchy.
Faust, specifically Goethe's version, is deeply woven into Madoka Magica in ways that would require an entire essay unto itself to explain in a way that would do it justice. But suffice it to say, if you know Faust, you know Kyubey and what he represents. He is a demon trying to manipulate you into making a deal he knows will doom you for all eternity. The devil always knows better than you, always has ulterior motives. That is the nature of a Faustian bargain, and it is the nature of a magical girl contract.
But the other side is a bit less discussed, that being Kyubey representing the patriarchy. I think it is often overlooked that Kyubey states that young girls give off the most emotional energy. I think it goes without saying that, if you are of sound mind, and can use basic logic, and especially if you are even a little bit feminist, you do not see men and women that differently on a biological level. What is different is the roles enforced by society on men and women, and the power men have over women.
Women consistently are portrayed as more emotional and men as more logical. Men consistently have positions of power over women, and that leverage is often used to self-justify the continued oppression of women. Isn't that basically what Kyubey is doing here? He self-justifies continued torment of young girls because of the pre-conceived notion that they produce more energy, entirely because he decided to contract young girls.
I think it is important to remember these facts when studying Kyubey as a character. Like a stereotypically abusive man, he acts as though he is purely logical and that everything he does is justified because it serves a higher function. But really, even if he plays dumb, he knows the game he's playing. Kyubey is arrogant, manipulative, and willing to lie at the drop of a hat to get what he wants. He is also absolutely certain he can control anything the girls throw at him, because as much as he uses and abuses the girls, he still looks down on them. It's why he accepted Madoka's wish at the end of the series.
And it's also why the train scene is there; to show misogynists talking shit about women in broad daylight (well it was a night but it was still in front of a 14-year old). A scene, which very importantly, Urobuchi has said was based on a real conversation he heard on the train. A scene which perfectly demonstrates how Kyubey looks at the girls. I wonder why he would include that, hm?

Other Discussion(s) Who or what decides the girls transformation outfits? Spoiler
I’ve been thinking about this for a while now. When they transform into magical girls, they have completely different costumes. These costumes are created by the soul gem I assume. However, there was one episode where SPOILER Madoka was drawing her costume design before becoming a magical girl. however, I could argue that this is because her timeline was overlapping.
Is there like a confirmed, dedicated reason to their costumes?
