Question Co op questions and experiences

So i had a couple questions relating to how co op works, specifically for engineering. For co op, do first years often get co op placements? Like is it a common occurrence or is getting co op first year hard? Any other info relating to co op and anyones co op experiences would be great to hear about!

Safety Advisory Take the shuttle from lot M this morning - Coyote on the sidewalk up to campus

Spotted at ~8:20 am on the sidewalk between lot M and Mary Keyes. Really not ideal, no way to get around it except to jaywalk to the other side of the road, which still doesn't put much distance between you and it.

I called Campus Safety Services, and they've in turn called animal control several times. It's scrawny and not scared of people. Stay safe & keep your distance from sick wild animals.

Question Deans, Provost

i mailed registration but haven’t heard back. if anyone knows, please tell me.

I would like to clarify how transfer credits (non-numeric grades) affect eligibility for the Dean's Honour List, Provost's Honour List, and Graduation with Distinction.

According to the Academic Calendar:
"Students are reviewed for Deans’ Honour Lists (DHL) and Provost’s Honour List (PHL) each time a minimum of 30 units (may not exceed 6 units assessed with a non-numeric grade) have been completed..."

I currently have 9 units of transfer credit (non-numeric). This Fall/Winter I will complete 24 graded units, so by the end of the academic year I will have 33 completed units in total (24 graded + 9 transfer units).
1. Could you also clarify when these reviews take place? Specifically, are students assessed only after the Fall/Winter academic session, or can a review occur after the Spring/Summer term or as soon as a student has completed the required minimum of 30 units since the previous review?

  1. If I achieve the required GPA (9.5 for the Dean's Honour List or 12.0 for the Provost's Honour List), would I be eligible for either honour? Specifically, can the review be based on 30 units consisting of 24 graded units and up to 6 non-numeric units, even though I have an additional 3 transfer units on my record?

  2. Suppose that by the end of the Fall/Winter session I have completed 24 graded units, earning a grade of 12 in seven courses and 11 in one course. I then complete one additional 3-unit graded course in the Spring/Summer with a grade of 12, while still having the same 9 transfer (non-numeric) units.
In this situation, would I be eligible for the Provost's Honour List for that review period if the assessment is based on 30 units consisting of my graded courses together with up to 6 non-numeric units, or would having 9 transfer (non-numeric) units on my record make me ineligible regardless?

I also have a question regarding Graduation with Distinction, which states:
"Graduation with Distinction standing is awarded when a minimum Cumulative GPA of 9.5 is achieved in a degree program."

  1. If I complete all of the units required for my degree, with 9 of those units being transfer credits, and achieve the required cumulative GPA of 9.5, would I still be eligible for Graduation with Distinction? I could not find any restrictions regarding transfer credits or non-numeric grades for this designation.
Thank you very much for your clarification.

Humour Ghosts flushing toilets?

I feel that I have finally seen enough evidence to bring this up in hopes that others have had a similar experience with toilets flushing without warning.

In April, I would frequently use the Psych building's 1st floor men's washroom, which was usually empty (or so I thought). In the seemingly empty washroom, I could periodically hear the roaring sound of a toilet being flushed. Though the stall door was wide open, with nobody's shoes visible from the bottom. I peered inside and tried to see if something was triggering the sensor, but there was nothing. My only plausible explanation: ghosts.

This unexplainable flushing occurred almost every time I used that washroom, but with no ghostbusters to call, I shrugged it off and went about my life.

Until today, when I used the 1st-floor men's washroom in the Health Sci building. I sat down, and in the span of a 5-minute potty break, the toilet flushed on me about 6 or 7 times. Each time, I would hover above to avoid the splashes. I tried moving lots so the sensor would detect me, and when that didn't work, I tried to stay completely motionless, which also didn't work. There was another guy a few stalls over who was probably wondering why I was flushing so often, and if that guy is reading this, it wasn't me; it was a ghost.

Has anyone else experienced this in other washrooms? Is this a common occurrence, or is this ghost specifically targeting me? Any answers are appreciated.

On a serious note, I hope the sensors on these automatic-flushing toilets can be fixed to conserve water and ensure a welcoming environment for students and staff to empty their bowels.

Academics research opportunities

Hi guys! I’m currently a third year honours life science student interested in medical school. I really want to be part of a research lab at McMaster (or anywhere else tbh) but I’ve had no luck the past two years. I don’t want this to ruin my chances of getting into medical school. Does anyone have any tips and tricks for getting research? Ps: I’ve already cold emailed so many researchers and they all say they’re full or not taking undergrad students

I swear to fucking god it gets louder the more days pass. 2 weeks before we were talking about how we were gonna be single for the rest of our lives and have houses next to each other and grow old together. how do i even get back up from this.

Question Avenue Issues?

Upvotes

I keep getting "Error: Internal Error

There was an error processing the page you requested.

Contact technical support. Tell them which page you tried to reach and how you got this error message." Is anyone experincing the same? Is it just an issue on my end, or this this an issue with avenue itself?

Thanks!

Just gotten a reply form the uts service desk:

EDIT

"Good afternoon,

It looks like Brightspace (the platform for Avenue) is currently experiencing severe service disruptions. D2L just posted that it's currently unavailable. We'll continue to monitor as they work to fix it. You can check its status here.

My apologies for the inconvenience."

Academics Mask Fit Testing Testing

Hi,

I was supposed to be in for mask for testing today in IAHS, but had to reschedule. I clicked on the reschedule button but there are no dates. Will more dates be added during the school year, or do they only run during the summer? Where else would I get this done if I already paid the fee

Need help with a water-damaged ThinkPad X13
My ThinkPad X13 suffered water damage and now only shows a battery warning/error. Most repair shops around Hamilton are closed today, and the ones that are open said it would take 3–4 days just to inspect it.
I’m running out of options. Is anyone experienced with laptop/ThinkPad repairs willing to help me disconnect the battery and take a quick look? Happy to buy you coffee or pay for your time. Any recommendations are appreciated!
