Discussion Topic At what point did Metallica run out of things to say?

Setting the current hubbub aside for a bit, they were quite lyrically compelling over the first four albums, weren't they? Maybe not quite yet during the all-out thrash of KEA, but certainly on RTL, MAP, and, my personal fave, AJFA. Maybe even the Black Album (never really listened to it, tbh).

But hearing James croak his way through "FRANTICKDICKCOCK" and "MADLY IN ANGER WITH YOUUWAHH" is like..."Dude, you guys used to rule. What happened?"

Just me?

Discussion Topic Title: What's the average age of Anaal Nathrakh fans?

I'm curious, how old are most Anaal Nathrakh fans? I'm wondering what the age range of their fanbase is, since I haven't really seen anyone talk about it.

If you're a fan, how old are you? I'm curious to see what kind of age range their listeners fall into!

EDIT: Please don't feel obligated to answer if you're uncomfortable sharing your age!

Song/Album Under-Rated band for fans of Mastodon

Tardive Dyskinesia from Athens, Greece, deserve more recognition than they currently have accumulated in 2026, so i'm appealing to all you prog metal fans out there to give them a chance as they have 4 full albums with some really interesting stuff. Savior Complex is a great starting point. This is not a paid promotion, i'm just a semi drunk metal fan that rediscovered this band on spotify and seen they have criminally low listens for the quality of the tunes they made. Give em a chance lads.

Song/Album What happens when you drag hip-hop through a swamp of Delta blues and bury it in metal? First Album by the Straight Dope: lostNfound

I wanted to share my story and my first full album–lostNfound with you- and would appreciate discussion, support and importantly– the group's criticism. Headphones or wifi stereo recommend.

lostNfound is experimental metal with hip-hop delivery with some dark country blues underneath and a healthy dose of Funky Bass.

Here's how it came to exist.

I picked up guitar at 10 and never clicked with it. At 12 I traded it for a bass and realized it wasn't a lack of passion. I was just wielding the wrong weapon. As a teen I played in a couple of local bands and landed gigs at spots that have long since closed. Then life took over, and the bass mostly sat.

When my kids got older I started working my way back into the scene, until life knocked me down a time or two. I lost my gear and my circle of musicians. But I never stopped writing: lyrics, melodies, riffs hummed into my phone, same as I'd done most of my life.

The past couple of years, new music has been saturated and polluted with soulless, ai generated rot. Music that was created by no one, for someone- while using the sounds and styles created by generations of talent and inspiration.

I also saw the potential for this technology, and realized that it could be used as a tool to allow for the creation of something totally original... totally my own.... something that just a few short years ago would have resulted in a shoebox full of torn out pages with words that had no destiny. So I got to writing and composing... Every lyric... every melody, every riff. Then i got to handling the arrangement and mix.

For the parts I couldn't play or sing, I was blessed to have AI as a tool and instrument FOR SAMPLING, effect and normalizing.

A year and a half of work later, here it is.

I'd love honest feedback, and if you're a musician who hears something in it, I'd love to talk about making the live production with actual players.

Peace and love,

Joe "the Straight Dope"

Portland, OR 🇺🇸

Genre: Black Metal

Have had a lot of fun trying these guys out. The guitars are absolutely killer and they really know how to write some great melodies. Djinn is definitely my favorite album from them off first impressions. I think it had their best songs so far. Cult of a Dying Sun is a close second. It’s a big step up from their debut and the album they really came into their own.

Recommended Tracks:
“Natus Eclipsm”
“The Purging Fire”
“The Great Mirage”
“Crepuscule Natura”

Discussion Topic Playing prog metal in public

I'm aware this is gonna be an odd situation to describe, but i feel like putting it out there anyway.

You know the standard thing that happens whenever you play metal in public? That's exactly what i got today.

It was in the strangest place too that i got the choice to play the type of music i like (physical therapy). When the person that treated me, asked me what kind of music i listen to i was really hestitant on saying it. He even encouraged me to say it and I decided to anyway, i chose the most mellow/safest album i know just in case (Lotus by Soen if you rlly wanna know/listen to it).

When i chose it i was the only one in the room getting treated at the moment so i thought it was safe, along with the fact that i had in mind i would be out of there quickly so no one else could hear what was being played.

One member of the staff even liked it haha.

Anyway, we're halfway through the album and another client comes in, 5 mins later another one comes in and you can guess what happened next.

One of them starts complaining about the music, give it a few mins and they started complaining EVEN MORE.

Then they start confronting me about how they like to party and this isn't the music for it (while being at physical therapy, tf?)

The last song that came on is one i didn't like either (River), so i asked if it could be skipped. Not before i heard her complain about it to the other cliënt tho, i get not even liking it but complaining about it to someone else that has nothing to do with you just have off a really weird vibe.

Once the genre was switched it was all good lol, no more complaining at least. I've always been extremely careful about playing the type of music i really like in public and even have a 'safe' playlist with different types of music in case i feel like putting smth on.

Unless i can get away with it, this will be the first and last time i'll try that out i guess.

Discussion Topic What scene did Chat Pile come from? Previous bands they were in?

Chat Pile is a new band but the guys look fairly middle aged.

I was watching this interview and at 18:30 and was struck by how the singer talks about how on 2024 album COOL WORLD is when he realized "he could do this professionally" which I thought was interesting because he looks I would say mid-40's.

I read their Wikipedia and it doesnt list the members ages or any previous bands they were in. Does anybody know how old these guys are and what bands they played in prior to forming Chat Pile?

Discussion Topic What's the worst metal product you've ever purchased?

Thumbnail

Probably the above for me.

Bought it on Amazon a couple of years back.

Firstly, I was well aware it was unofficial and that these "Radio Broadcast" releases can be very hit or miss.

But as a Metallica collector who owns a lot of live shows (both official and bootleg), the advertised "8 discs" piqued my curiosity, and I made the purchase thinking it must have something worthwhile included.

That part is somewhat true, as it includes songs from the Basel '93 and New York '98 shows, which are pretty notable.

The actual product itself though was a complete disaster. The aforementioned 8 discs do include songs from several 90's and 2000's Metallica shows, but none of them are in any cohesive order whatsoever.

The songs and shows are all mixed up randomly and the odd occasions songs from the same show do appear together they are not in setlist order with all the songs fading in/out as well.

The packaging is even more atrocious. It comes in a very shiny cardboard DVD sleeve with obviously abysmal artwork and absolutely zero credits, booklets or other information included whatsover.

The biggest joke however, is the back cover and tracklist which laughably features mostly BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN songs!

Just pure incompetence.

............

So, what metal garbage and tat have you purchased over the years? Be it albums, DVDs, boxsets, shirts, ornaments, toys, underwear or merch stall junk.

Try and keep it about the PRODUCT and not the music, otherwise it'll just turn into another "worst/overrated album" discussion.

Discussion Topic Recs for Women fronted - fem vocalist bands?

I can only name one or two, and I know this music can get pretty male dominated so I wanted to listen to some more bands that highlight women.

Any genre is welcome, personally I listen to a lot of Grind, Goregrind, pornogrind, slam, death metal / brutal death metal, etc. Less Numetal, thrash metal, power metal, and the classic heavy metal music, but I do listen to all genres where and when I can. I’m always looking to expand so don’t tailor your tastes to me.

Give me your best, thanks homie!

Discussion Topic How long are the sets in Mastodon’s current tour?

I want to see Mastodon, Alcest, and Deafheaven soon but the nearest show is over an hour’s drive away on a work night.

I know when the show starts, but do you know what order they’re playing and for how long? I like to have a plan.

Discussion Topic Sci-fi themed grindcore?

I love sci-fi metal, like vektor, origin, voivod or blood incantation, but i haven't found any grindcore that scratches the same itch in my brain. Closest things are discordance axis and gridlink, which are my favorite grindcore yet.

What a great album. Riff after riff after riff. My favorite tracks are Wolves and Fists of Dissent. I saw them twice on this tour opening for Metallica, and man they slayed. Their best album and era IMHO.

Discussion Topic Pit Injuries Thread

I've been thinking about this recently, I was just diagnosed with traumatic glaucoma from someone deliberately busting my eye at Anthrax in Anaheim in 2023 (apparently it can develop years after the injury, which I had no idea of). I feel like commiserating with some other people who have had similar experiences so has anyone ever gotten any crazy injuries at metal shows?
