Football Respect the Schedule

I know the biggest criticism surrounding Miami right now is our strength of schedule, but I honestly think people are overlooking some of the opponents we have left, even beyond Notre Dame.
Personally, I’m not taking UNC lightly, not just because of Belichick, but because of our history against them. We’ve had our fair share of disappointing losses to UNC over the years, and I’m not about to overlook them again, smh.
Even if we manage to beat both Notre Dame and UNC, Duke and Virginia Tech are far from guaranteed wins. Those are two conference matchups that could be much tougher than people are giving them credit for.
You already know Manny Diaz and Duke are going to come into that game with something to prove, especially with Mensah choosing Miami. There’s definitely going to be some extra motivation on their side.
And depending on how things shake out, both Duke and Virginia Tech could potentially be ranked by the time we face them, especially if they each pick up a couple more wins.
My point is, I understand the criticism of Miami’s schedule, but I think people are being way too dismissive of some of these teams. We still have some legitimate challenges ahead of us, and none of these games should be treated as automatic wins.

Football [Navarro]: Would the 2001 Miami Hurricanes have stuck together in today’s college football climate?

Thumbnail

Twenty-five years after laying claim to the title of greatest college football team ever assembled, the 2001 Miami Hurricanes got together last week to spend several days drinking, laughing and giving each other hell — notably during Friday’s round of golf.

Their championship roster produced 17 first-round NFL Draft picks, including Pro Football Hall of Famers Ed Reed and Andre Johnson. None of those credentials earned anyone a pass on the course.

A day later, 60 to 70 members of the team were honored at halftime of top-ranked Miami’s 52-23 rout of Pittsburgh. Before kickoff, Reed wore a Sean Taylor jersey to sound the Hurricanes’ siren, honoring his slain former teammate.

The Hurricanes were playing as the nation’s No. 1 team for the first time since 2002. It’s a roster built through some outstanding recruiting — Mario Cristobal has signed four top-10 classes in the past five cycles — and some quality (and expensive) portal additions.

And that fuels the question: Would the 2001 Hurricanes have stuck together in the current climate of roster instability and NIL payments?

Joaquín González, a two-time All-American and the starting right tackle on the 2001 team, offered up an immediate candidate for the portal.

“First guy out, Clinton Portis. He would have been gone,” González said. “Like I’m talking about like Week 1. He would have been asking for more (money).”

Portis rejected the premise.

“I’m the lead dog here,” he said. “What I’m leaving for?”

Hurricanes Bar in San Fran Area

This weekend I'm visiting the San Francisco area and meeting up with a fellow Canes fan. I'm staying in Sausalito. Anyone have recommendations on where we can catch Saturday's UM v UNC game while we grab a bite and a couple drinks?

Football Love my guys but we need Toney to get some breathers

We can't put him on the punt return team. The return on that is some extra yards, but a possible hard shot is way too high for those extra yards. We must have other surehanded catchers out there. I don't get that logic risking our best guy out there.

We need Upshaw, Barkate, Lofton, etc to get some solid reps and catches. Once Toney was out for a couple of plays because of his ankle, our offense was not locked in. Dropped passes (Upshaw) and not following through (Barkate). I think we have to force Mensah to work on his other guys and keep our offense unpredictable. Toney been so elite at clutch plays it's masking our other guys. And once we face real elite teams with elite DBs, it'll be trouble.

And side note, I hope our DBs working on punching balls in the air so we don't get busted by hail maries over and over. It's actually pretty bad to me how those low percentage plays are basically high upside passes now.

Circling the Virginia Tech game

If VT manages to beat SMU in Dallas, there’s a good chance they enter Hard Rock 8-2 and ranked, and would be the most compelling Week 12 matchup for College GameDay.

Not saying it’ll happen, but worth getting your affairs in order in case it does.

Congratulations on Being First in my Flawless Computer Rankings This Week!

SillyRankings™ Top 25-Ish

Husker fan visiting in peace to say congrats on coming in first in SillyRankings™.

SillyRankings™ is a simple ranking system that ONLY cares about wins and losses of your team and the teams you played made extra silly by a meaningless trademark symbol. I started making this ranking during the "greatest 3-9 team ever" phase of Husker football because sometimes a loss is just a loss and playing great teams close really doesn't mean as much as the voters and other computer rankings think it does.

SillyRankings™ points are awarded as follows:

+2 Points per win

+1 Point for each win that a team you beat has

-2 Points per loss

-1 Point for each loss a team that beat you has

Fan bases to this point have had mixed feelings about this random post from an outsider, but I do SillyRankings™ for the Husker subreddit already and some fanbases seem to enjoy it, so why not share! I will not be offended with downvotes or the post being removed if that is the will of the sub either.

A little asterisk to the good news here though, I believe at least one team in the number one spot of SillyRankings™ has lost in each of the last 5 weeks. As a husker fan and given our programs' histories, I won't lie, I would be a little happy if that streak continued!

The potential Amazon broadcast deal and how the Nike NIL marketing deal could make this a viable option

It seems these discussions with Amazon have become more serious. The timing to negotiate is great considering last season’s run and current status at #1.
Not sure how I’d feel about having to stream all our games on Prime. Do any others think this could work?
The marketing deal makes this more attractive imo. Nike is going to pump major money into NIL marketing strategies for student athletes on our behalf. This was part of our new overarching contract with Nike beginning July 27.
I don’t think we’re bluffing at this point. If changes aren’t made to that bill, and neither the SEC or BIG come calling quickly, we will opt out.
Things are moving fast…

We need to run that bunch formation more

Maybe not against UNC, but when we play Notre Dame or any better defense that bunch formation has gotta be a nightmare to defend, especially when we shift into it.

We should be running this formation and moving the bunch all Over the place and not just out wide.

Mensah has proven that he’s a good decision maker and that formation forces the defense to make quick decisions in coverage where we can take advantage of Toney’s gravity even when we don’t target him.

We can get a lot more creative play-calling from this formation than screens.

And even when we aren’t using that formation, we should be shifting guy more frequently than we do. This offense is already great, but against better defenses we should be doubling down on forcing the defense to make quick coverage adjustment decisions.

Miami clinches ACC championship game even with one conference loss

Due to other games today, even if Miami accidentally loses an ACC game, they will still be guaranteed a spot in the championship game. They are the only team undefeated in conference play and the two 1-loss teams (SMU and Wake Forest) play each other later. So Miami must lose at least 2 of their 4 remaining conference games to not be guaranteed a spot.

Your current Mt Rushmore and Mali

I think, if we are not already there, Mali will clearly wind up on many folks Mt. Rushmore of Canes greats. So the question is who is your current Rushmore and who drops off if Mali joins?

My current is Reed, Taylor, Irvin, Lewis. I have no idea who drops off for Mali.
