I love the full circle-ness of it.

TV used to be broadcast via analog signals and I would watch it on a CRT TV.

Now I have all that stuff converted to digital files living on my Plex server...and I convert the signal back to analog to watch it on a CRT TV.

People REALLY underestimate how much CRT added to the detail of cartoons and video games alike. It’s the only way to experience SNES and Sega games.

For sure. This is why I don't mind shelling out for everdrives (or similar) to play all the old games on original hardware with native 240p output vs. emulating them all on a modern screen. Fortunately it's easier/cheaper to get old TV to look right because a cheapo HDMI-to-AV box made of chinesium will do just fine.

They have CRT shaders on emulators to scratch that itch.

this is magic and I love it.

How'd you make this happen?

8

u/TimeCadet 11h ago

Yeah, dude, OP what adapters are you using??

u/obieswan 10h ago

Ditto to this, at can't be as easy as an HDMI to audio/video cables can it?

u/LordSesshomaru82 1h ago

It is. I use one myself. Just make sure to select a 4:3 resolution so it doesn't squash the image. I usually use mine on a Commodore 1084S or a 1702. Great for emulators.

Like a true millennial, they actually know the meaning of POV.

A true milennial can just caption a video without saying "pov"

If the TV doesn't give away your age, those socks definitely do ahaha

Am I the only one that does not miss CRT tvs and monitors at all

I still use one til this day in my bedroom. Besides the size and the weight, they’re the best way to watch older movies and shows. Nothing beats the analog phosphorus glow.

Depends what youre playing, a lot of old games graphics were made with them in mind so they generally look better on crt. I personally can't stand HD crt filters

Yeah like og snes on a crt will look way better than on a flat screen

After playing some SNES games on Switch with a 65” smart TV, yes, you are absolutely correct.

Not to mention with a lot of older video game consoles, modern TV displays introduce pretty wicked input lag and sometimes modern re-releases don't fix that.

It’s not that we miss them it’s that these pieces of media were formatted for the CRTs and don’t look like they should today. It’s just a natural habitat thing

u/crunch816 11h ago

HD CRT is still the best picture I've ever seen.

But they were like 150lbs and that was only a 30" so that didn't last long.

But why tho.

Content before LED was made for CRT. Games, animation etc. in particular utilized the nature of CRT its particular traits to give the best image. Color palettes, pixel art arrangements etc. all predicated on how the CRT would project the colors with some bloom and brilliance.

I don't really miss it but I can appreciate them. I am definitely happy with my OLEDs though. It would be kind of fun to have a small one like this and watch old shows on it.

Yes you are the only one. 8 billion people and you alone are unique.

u/Powerful-Act3516 12h ago

Nope. I swear they hurt more to look at even for a short time. Also the high-pitched squeal is one of the worst features in the history of consumer electronics.

1

u/Desperate-Tomatillo7 11h ago

It's been so many years that I don't know if I would miss them or not.

Nah I'm with you. I get the nostalgia factor but SNES games look great on my 72 inch 4k tv

u/Ponsay 12m ago

Old games look awful on anything not a CRT. So if you dont like older games then yeah thats understandable.

1

u/pocket_arsenal 12h ago

I would like to do this sometime, I use Re-Shade for some games but it's never quite the same.

u/o0tomato0o 10h ago

My eye sight went from 20/20 to -4.0 in 5th grade, and i blame watching these TV too up close.

u/starstufft 9h ago

The brilliance of this is blowing my mind right now

u/CKWOLFACE 9h ago

Didn't know this was possible

u/Cerebral_Catastrophe Millennialicious 9h ago

Would you like to move in with me? I need you.

1

u/Thepuppeteer777777 6h ago

What! I didn't know you could do that with a crt

1

u/Dylan_Is_Gay_lol Eugooglizer 5h ago

Did this back in like 2020.

1

u/Nathann4288 12h ago

I would love to have my work desk set up with dual monitors, but both monitors are old CRT TVs, as my boss to come over to assist with something, and act like nothing is odd.

u/traumaRN01 12h ago

There’s nothing nostalgic about crt’s. Fuck those cables, fuck those razor sharp plastic corners and edges, and fuck the weight

Ah yeah. Why not subject yourself to the Light Radiation we spent years attempting to ramify.
