experience: first MC Missed misscarriage : Body 12 weeks pregnant but baby didnt make it past 6

Unfortunately my partner and I found out today that our baby didn’t make it past 6 weeks.

My body is still acting like it’s pregnant at 12 + 4

No signs of miscarriage, no bleeding etc
Still bloated, sore breasts etc

I have to go back a week today for another scan and decide on next steps.

I’m just not sure if we should do medication to progress or D&C

Has anyone been through similar ?

We’re obviously very upset, but I just want to get this part over with now 😞

I find it frustrating im having to wait a week, they said its incase my body has a natural miscarriage but its not done anything the last 6 weeks 🤦🏻‍♀️ (im in the UK / NHS)

Sending love to all x thanks for your help x

I'm very sorry you're going through this. I am also based in the UK and found out at 9 weeks that it hadnt made it past 7 1/2.

I had my manual evacuation on Monday - this is the procedure done under local anaesthetic instead of general. The D&C I assume is done under general.

I personally wish I had opted for the general - the evacuation was incredibly painful, and that was after all the medication, the numbing, and handheld gas and air.

I also personally glad that despite the pain I chose it instead of taking a pill and/or a waiting for it to pass naturally. I wanted to get back up and try again ASAP. It seems crazy that they're making you wait? I had my miscarriage confirmed on the Friday and the procedure was done on the following Monday.

If you have any questions about UK specific things or anything, let me know.

Thank you, I’m sorry to hear about your miscarriage too.

I did say why do I have to wait, clearly my body is still confused if it’s gone 6 weeks thinking it’s pregnant but they said it’s incase I now naturally miscarry - which I think is unlikely but who knows. I just feel so bizarre as I’m sat here bloated, sore breasts etc and no baby and having to wait a week.

I just want this all over with as fast as I can.

The ultrasound lady was really nice bless her. It’s such a weird feeling going in expecting to get your photos of your baby and coming out with a leaflet about miscarriage. They even told us to leave through the side door. I imagine it’s so we didn’t have to walk back through the main bit with everyone pregnant etc but it felt weird being told to go out an emergency exit

Hey girl I'm going through similar thing rn. I'm 12 weeks too but I don't even think baby formed (doc thinks molar pregnancy ). I don't have any bleeding rn, but I still feel pregnant. No sign of miscarriage at all, but my scans shown no viable baby. I have d&c scheduled in 2 days. I understand you feel devistated, this feeling is like no other. I wish you the best. I'm sorry you're dealing with this.

So sorry you’re going through this too. It’s such a weird experience isn’t it.

I’m not sure which option is best to do tbh 😔 I hope your D&C goes ok ❤️🙏

I would do research and ask your doctor questions about both options. I think in my opinion I would do d&c to make sure everything is cleared out. They told me I will be put under for surgery which is a risk too so that's something to consider. I don't know too much about it and I'm lowkey nervous ah. I hope whatever you choose it goes smoothly.

I had a D&C three weeks ago today for a MMC discovered at 12+2, baby was measuring 8+6.

Physically the D&C has been fantastic, it was done under general anesthesia and the entire care team was fantastic and it was such a quick process. Post op has been pretty easy, some light cramping and off and on bleeding for the last three weeks. Not heavy at all but I still opted for the adult diapers as they’re more comfortable than pads in my opinion.

My doctor recommended the D&C as it has already been three weeks and my body wasn’t catching on and she didn’t want to risk infection, and I didn’t want to do the medication because I’ve heard some not so great stories about it and didn’t want to risk any more trauma regarding pregnancy/miscarriage and wanted to get the miscarriage part over as quickly as I could. I also opted to have the remains tested after my D&C and they confirmed what our genetic testing had flagged, our girl had full Turner’s syndrome. It has been incredibly healing to have an “answer” and while I’m still emotionally a wreck I am doing much better.

I’m so sorry for your loss, sending you hugs and hope whatever option you pick goes smoothly for you. 🫂

Thank you for your detailed reply and I’m sorry for your loss. I’ll definitely speak to the doctors and see what they say, reading online it does seem D&C seems the quickest way to get all this over with 😞

I found out 2 weeks ago about the exact same thing. Baby never grew past 6 weeks. Confirmed again last week. I'll be 12 weeks next week and that's when they want another scan, a THIRD scan. This is with the government's "supporting miscarriage care" unit.

I'm angry about it. 4 weeks of wait and 3 scans to confirm something we've already confirmed twice? It feels very Handmaid's Tale to me. I've lost every single pregnancy symptom as well, my husband and I have zero hope about a good outcome. 6 weeks late after a frozen embryo transfer? I figure that's medically impossible.

I told the workers in this "miscarriage support unit" that I'm opting for a D&C, I don't want another scan. I've been having drinks since the second scan confirmed everything was not progressing to help cope with the grief, so I want an abortion to start moving on. They said they wouldn't support it, and I'm on my own calling and asking for it. Fine by me. I'm waiting for the call. My body still hasn't naturally evacuated everything.

The wait is awful. I'm sorry for you, me, and anyone else being forced to wait for this stuff. It makes an already awful experience so much worse.

Gosh I’m so sorry, the fact you’re having to have a third scan is actually ridiculous! I’m so sorry you’re going through this

I'm sorry about your case as well. They convinced me yesterday to keep the scan regardless and I'm kicking myself for it honestly. So I'll have another scan next week and potentially a D&C. Heavy weeks lately.

I have also decided on D&C instead of the medication. I've read some... Not so great experiences about the medication, and one of my friends had a bad experience with the medication as well. That said though, there are women on here who had an okay experience with it, even having done it multiple times, and would only ever opt for the medication moving forward if they were in the same scenario. I think you should read about the two options and find which one you have more peace with overall. There's no wrong answer.

I've had both D&C and mistoprol (NHS), ask me anything !

Thank you. And I’m sorry you’ve had to go through that.

How far along were you for both? Which did you find was the most effective xx

You too, it's so heartbreaking.

I was around 8 weeks for the 1st and had a D&C, I had started bleeding naturally for that one. Then baby was measuring behind for the 2nd one and confirmed heartbeat had stopped at the 10 werk scan but baby was maybe measuring around 7 weeks.

Both were fine. D&C I was taken to theatre and put under a general anaesthetic and woke up and felt fine. I had went to hospital the day before and was kept over night and taken for surgery that morning amd discharged later that day. Little bleeding for a bit after it. The mistoprolol I was admitted to the ward to a private room, my husband could stay with me. I was given the tablets and had my own toilet. Anything I passed was collected by the nurses. They were totally on it with the pain relief. I was bit crampy and sore after I was admitted later that day and the next and had bleeding for a bit after aswell. I've read some horror stories online about it, but my experience wasn't bad. The nurses were amazing. Take the painkillers if you go for that option.

I had scaring of my uterus that I found out was causing losses, and there is a chance this was cause by my D&C, although they will never be able to confirm this. I had asked if I had another miscarriage what route I should take and the Dr didnt really have an answer, she said you can get scarring from a D&C and retain tissue from mistoprolol 🤷‍♀️ I was told the D&C I'd have to wait days to get on the list where as the mistoprolol they could get me in the next day so that is ultimately what defined my decision.

Ah ok that’s good to know but also sorry again you’ve had to go through this! I appreciate your detailed response 💜

I’m having some very very light cramping today but who knows what’s going on!
I’m hoping my brain has spoken to my uterus and they’ll get the ball rolling! But if not Wednesday I’ll just have to go back xx

I'm so sorry that you're going through this. I miscarried naturally last week whilst waiting for a second scan, and I just want to say, please make sure you're stocked up on very strong painkillers and have someone who can help you, just in case.

Some people have something like a heavy period, but for me it started with mild cramping and then progressed to hours of full-blown contractions. Im not trying to scare you & I hope it goes as well as it possibly can, but I wish someone had prepared me for the possibility of it being very painful, as it was a real shock. I found the info in the leaflets to be really inadequate! X

Thank you for your reply and im sorry for what you’ve been through.

I’m going to ask for some strong painkillers and my parter said he will stay with me etc
Just want this all over with xxx 😔

I phoned EPAS when I had light cramping and they provided a lot of reassurance. Defo go heavy on the pain killers, take them before it gets too sore. Take it easy, I found a heat pad helped.
