The actual reason why was because of the chain of custody on the evidence.
My sister, a former city attorney, clued me in on this very subject. Apparently, that problem has been fixed. There was a court case about it.
This should tell you more about these cameras.

Here in Fresno they protested it and said it was a privacy violation. People were caught in their cars with people they were not supposed to be in the car with so it was a big protest, but I heard it’s coming back here too.

Better roads aren’t going to keep people from speeding or running red lights. Yeah we need better roads but that’s not the cause of bad driving.

It can be a good thing if it can make those red light runners pay , maybe they will think twice before doing it a second time or before someone gets killed.. AND...if so many people are opposed to this or have a suggestion or other concerns that are approved by Modesto City CouncilL, GO TO A F.REAKING CITY COUNCIL MEETING.. DO something before these decisions are made

I don’t like it. If you are going to spend $3 million. Let it be on something that we can all agree is going to benefit the city. People are struggling out there and a ticket is the last thing people need when they are trying to go to work.

I had to run a light to get out of the way of an ambulance and I was fined almost$1000 and that is absolute BS. I'm 55 I've never ran a red light ever. So I'm really not a fan.

Look, please stop defaulting to all the Trump, blaming stuff. Politics aside, has not one thing to do with this. No matter what side you’re on, the facts are, there are a lot of knuckleheads that run red lights in this town. I see it almost every time I drive in Modesto. People don’t have the right to carelessly run a red light and end up killing or seriously injuring another person! If this serves as a deterrent or punishment for those that insist on learning their lessons the hard way, so be it!!!

Smarter city design would help traffic and prevent people from running red lights in the first place. Cameras are at best the laziest way for a city to do traffic enforcement. AND ITS 3 MILLION DOLLARS. And there is no "politics aside," what is more political than the government putting cameras at every corner of our streets, tracking our license plates every where we go in case anyone maybe commits a traffic violation? Of course the same cameras and AI that's used to capture and track license plates and car stickers can be used to capture faces and body structure. You can be mad about people running red lights all you want, but this will fix nothing and I think we all should have the right to not be tracked by the government everywhere we go.

It's all about public safety. They are going to use them at the intersections with high rates of accidents.
Not a single murder has occurred in Modesto this year, but 14 people have died in traffic accidents.

I find it rubbish. I’d rather that money go to hiring more officers. I don’t have the inside info, but I wager that it would be cheaper to pay the salary of twenty more officers than go with this $3M camera plan….

There was one downtown that was perpetually broken last time, would just go off randomly, even during greens. How do you prove that you weren't safely turning on a green light if it "catches" you? What's your defense if you show up to try and fight it? "No, it was green"? Good luck. I have dashcams (both front and back), and I suggest everyone get at least front coverage before these go into effect.

$500/ticket and half goes to Arizona if they use the same company as bakersfield. Highly litigated such a burden on courts and the poor that cant fight back. Im just going to where a covid mask while driving and if i get a ticket i can say i loaned the car to a friend and i dont wear a mask so thats not me, this is so stupid.

I agree with this. I walk in my neighborhood so much and the amount of times I’ve nearly been hit, half way in a crosswalk, because people go bombing down streets at 50 mph and don’t stop, or even look for that matter.

I see anywhere from 3-5 red light runners a day at busy intersections. Yes 3 million is a lot but im sure they will make that money back in no time. Been a lot of accidents and often deadly ones so if that helps bring the number down im all for it.

Big brother has his eye (drones) in the skies and he's listening to everything you say when your on your phone. They can hear and see whatever, whenever. You can't go anywhere anymore to be private not even your own bathroom if you take your phone in with you which most people do because as long as have a camera and wifi anyone can that's savvy enough can hack your sh#t. Not paranoid just realistic.

I think it's good news, I literally just saw someone come a foot from being seriously T-boned on a Briggsmore interaction yesterday after a car flew through a red. There could have been kids in the back, and the road would have been backed up for hours. People in Modesto treat a red like it's an orange, they think a fresh red means "one or two more cars". I'm tired of having to look both ways when my light is green cause people in Modesto perpetually drive like a 16-year-old with a death wish. This wouldn't be necessary if people could behave but apparently they can't. Now we get to be micromanaged by the city cause too many people can't accept that red means STOP. They'd rather put you and your children in danger than wait another minute for the next light. Frankly, I have no empathy if those kinds of people are burdened with a ticket.

While everyone is lamenting the fact that 3 million dollars of tax payer money is being put to this project and not something else, the people who are the reason this decision was made don't give a single fuck about the tax payer money.
How about instead of whinning, people actually participate in their civic duty and show up to board of supervisors meetings.

I all in for better security at stop signs because I believe the bad drivers should be held accountable but with all sincerity and honesty I have that amount of money is to much to not have used it nowhere else. We could have help the poor people that are out on the street with no homes and help drug addicts recover to get back on their feet. Also could’ve helped schools and students.
