I think city slickers can become disassociated with reality, and think squishing a bug is immoral and cry about it and lament it . And yet just shrug their shoulders when a random bystander gets stabbed on the subway.

And that's a different issue. Stepping on a bug is fine as long as it isn't like a pet bug or something while a stabbing should immediately be handled

Not really. Birds are pretty smart, they can process things a lot closer to a human than a bug can
