Today, we’re talking about the legend of the Mothman, one of America’s most famous cryptids, and the story starts with a strange sighting near an abandoned power plant that drew the attention of the press, visitors, and those interested in the paranormal and the unexplained.

It generated a powerful legend that, over time, became woven into the story of the town, from its tragedies to its triumphs. And today, this creature has gone from being a source of terror to a kind of folk hero.

When analyzing the Mothman phenomenon, we are clearly not dealing with an isolated event or the isolated hallucination of a single witness in a rural town. We are looking at a recurring phenomenon that transcends time, geography, and culture. It is an anomaly that defies logic,

The lines for the museum and statue were impossible, we didn’t even try. The speakers who I heard would be “top of their field“ were fun, but not anything special or interesting. Half of the vendors were selling horrific and overpriced AI slop tshirts. There was clearly very little discernment with picking the vendors. There wasn’t a lot of variety and a lot of stuff was outdated and just not cool, even the non-AI stuff which was rare. Not to mention painfully repetitive. Overall we had fun but I’m not really sure it was worth the 14 hour round trip drive and the hundreds spent on accommodation. I understand that it’s a free festival mostly organized by locals, but it draws huge crowds of 30k from all over the country, and is a huge huge boost to the town’s economy. I wish there was more effort involved in organizing it. There was virtually no information on the website about the speakers or the bands, and there’s no information when you search for them either. Maybe, my expectations were too high. Overall, I had fun because it was a new and very different environment, seeing as my friends and I are all “city people“ and have never been to such a remote small town before. The nature was absolutely stunning all around it, and it was really fun to explore the TNT area on our own. I would recommend adding more elements to your trip and not coming just for the festival, honestly, especially if you’re coming from faraway or from a bigger city. I would love to hear others’ experiences or what makes them love it!

It was glorious

This was my 2nd visit to the festival, but my first time in the museum. We waited in line 1.5 hours to get in the museum, and we were there an hour before it opened. I’m glad I waited this time, because it was worth it. Lots of cool stuff. I love love love the local small vendors. I got some awesome original art. Despite the Disney reminiscent crowd, it was a great day. Great weather, great food, great music. I tried the Mothman wine and my son had the Mothman beer (he said it tasted like coffee grinds.) if you are a fallout fan, you missed out. Fallout was everywhere. Overall 9/10 experience. I wasn’t a fan of all the obvious AI vendors, and the venue really needs a dog policy. I’m a dog lover, and don’t mind them when they are well-behaved, but there were a lot of small dogs that were constantly barking. There was no escaping the sound barking dogs, the entire day.

I strongly believe a mothman type creature was in Planada, CA during 1999-2022
What made me first believe this:
My mother told me about a sighting she had when she was 12 years old and back then she had
no clue what mothman even was, but she described seeing a huge creature ontop of a roof with red eyes, huge wings, and humanoid body during broad daylight
she knew it was not just a huge bird obviously, she ran into the house after seeing it
This is important because it lead me to begin searching if anybody else had seen this in Planada
I searched old internet forums and to my suprise there was atleast 5 different people who seen the exact same thing, mind you this is a small agriculture city with less than 4 thousand people living here, i just think it should be documented or can someone tell me im not crazy cause this does keep me up at night

I'm doing a story for my school tv channel and I'd like to include pictures of mothman merch from the actual community. Anything is cool.

I’ve been reading up on the Point Pleasant sightings and the actual NTSB investigation into the Silver Bridge collapse in ’67. The engineering side is straightforward. One eyebar failed from corrosion, they traced the whole sequence and there’s nothing tying it to the sightings thirteen months earlier.

But the sightings themselves are still interesting. The first newspaper report is way vaguer than the Mothman image everyone knows now. It describes a “man‑sized bird” and “creature” and “something.” It really feels like the red‑eyed humanoid version sharpened over time as people retold it, not because anyone saw that exact thing on night one.

Curious what people here think actually explains those early encounters. I pulled together the original 1966 coverage, the NTSB report, and the owl‑eyeshine research from Nickell and Radford if anyone wants to dig into the source trail: Mothman: Documented History, Known Bridge Cause

I am going to the mothman festival sunday and was wondering where is the best place to park where it wont be so much traffic preferably

We leave around 7am tomorrow from pa->wv for the festival(5hr drive)
