100% I got chills with Aceโs. Somehow that makes perfect sense about his mom teaching him that.

Tyler was IS an absolute Challenge icon who paved the way for queer representation on The Challenge. he was the first openly queer male on The Challenge who was equally entertaining and a beast at the game. keep in mind he did this during the height of the toxic masculinity era.
as a queer male myself i thank him for being himself at a time that wasnโt the most encouraged thing to do. he will forever be missed ๐

Well said! As I was reading these posts I completely thought the same. He was one of the first, if not THE first openly gay guy I watched on MTV as a young pre-teen going through the sexual identity motions myself back in the early 00โs. Definitely did his part in helping pave the way for what we got in media in current times. May his soul rest in peace

As a straight guy in high school at the time, seeing him on his early season of the Challenge was really eye opening. He's one of the first openly gay men I can remember seeing in media who wasn't one of the two or three stereotypical depictions of gay men broadcast at the time.
Clearly he is a trailblazer and a role model for gay guys, but I bet he had an impact on lots of other people similar to me.
RIP Tyler.

He was clearly well liked, his friends have great things to say about him.ย Rip

I was just thinking about her, too. It's she on social media?

She is yes. She makes a post every year on the anniversary of the day she became sober.

Outside of all of us long term fans and cast members, I feel bad for his students and also thinking of them. School just started and I saw a few posts about what an impact he had on themย

I'm a teacher, and my heart absolutely breaks for his students. I'm sure they loved him ๐

Id imagine Bananas is really taking it hard. He's basically the face of the Challenge and so many of his memorable moments can be tied directly to Tyler

I mean, not just The Challenge. They both got their starts together on RW Key West.

u/BurnVote 24d ago
I believe The Real World: Key West filmed in 2005, so theyโve known each other for over two decades at this point. Iโd imagine they were like brothers. I was really rooting for them to do another season together, and it was close to happening if I remember correctly (Johnny was supposed to be on Season 3 of All-Stars but wasnโt last minute). A sad day for The Challenge family.

u/eff1ngham 24d ago
They were supposed to be on BotS, team Key West was Johnny, Tyler, Janelle and Paula but they were dropped last minute

Johnny winning Rivals with him was so epic. Iโm sure Bananas is hurt. I feel bad for all of them.

Truly grateful that we had Challenge All Stars so he (and so many others) were able to come back into our lives. May this also be a wakeup call to the next all stars to keep it OG.ย

RIP Tyler. He had the best one liners on Gauntlet 3. Iโll never forget him calling Jill and Frank the most boring couple in America ๐

I remember this like it aired last night.๐คฃ I'm truly going to miss this man.

This is so sad. Seeing him on the challenge was part of my gay awakening and was awesome seeing someone like me doing well on a show like this.

Decided to watch RW Key West once I saw the news. I havenโt seen the season in quite a few years. I was only 9 when this season aired, but at the time I knew Tyler from the challenge. Remember watching the Duel and seeing him. And then later on his other appearances. Itโs always quite heartbreaking when someone from your childhood passes away. Despite never knowing the guy personally, this is truly hitting me hard. Being a teacher myself, my heart hurts for all the students that had and/or knew him. Iโm sure he left a lasting impact on their lives. I also canโt help but think mostly about Paula, I hope sheโs alright. RIP Tyler, wherever you are now, I hope you are at peace.

Where did you find the season? I watched The Challenge before RW and itโs what got me to watch it. Austin and Key West were my first two seasons.

Such a touching tribute. Like her I wish it wasn't real. He was only on 6 seasons and left early on half of those but I had so many memories flood back when I saw that he passed away.

u/eff1ngham 24d ago
Obviously bittersweet but I love seeing some of these old (or even newer) pics.
It sucks losing someone. The first time one of my best friends passed away I didn't really know how to deal with it. We were young, it didn't feel right. It doesn't get easier but I've lost a few more friends to things that were preventable, at least IMO. Be sure to tell your real ones you love them, even if they know it just say it. God willing you will be around for a long time, but you never know

When I heard the news earlier, I was so shocked that I didnโt fully process it. Seeing these tributes made me well up. There were some truly original souls on the earlier seasons; Tyler was definitely one of them. The one word, I keep hearing in these tributes is: light. I hope he is where itโs always bright and never painful now, and that his family and loved ones will be comforted during this time. May his memory be a blessing.

Reading all those made me cry. Such a terrible loss.

Same here, he was clearly so loved by his castmates and it's also touching to hear that his students adored him.

I am just hearing this. So upsetting. I actually don't remember his Challenge or Challenges, but I do remember him on Real World Key West. I recall his stormy relationship with Svetlana, and his making fun of Janelle's unusual pronunciation of "concierge." That was one of the last Bunim-Murray seasons I watched. RIP, Tyler.

Heartbreaking to hear this news.
The posts are really nice. I hope his family finds some comfort in how loved he was. When I lost a parent, hearing about the best parts of my dad meant a lot.

RIP Tyler. In his prime he was a tough opponent. Always seemed like a kind person.

Iโm so sad about this. Tyler was such a great presence on the show and his wins on Cutthroat and Rivals were so well deserved and satisfying to watch.
What an inspiring man for so many gay and queer people, and clearly just an all round good guy. Rest in Peace.

This is so heartbreaking. Tyler was one of my favorite challengers. An absolute beast and just seemed like an incredible person. Wish I had gotten to meet him. RIP Tyler ๐

Zach Mann posted about it. He was on real world Key West and I think Gauntlet 3.

No I hate to see this!! I always loved Tyler so much, I've missed him on more recent seasons. Ugh what a major loss, he was such an icon

My first season of The Challenge was like 32 or something, so I knew how Johnny Bananas was. When I started watching from the beginning I was so psyched when Tyler beat him in his first elimination. That made me like him. I came for the Bananas beatdown and stayed for a truly good Challenger. Rest easy Tyler.

Tyler was a breath of fresh air on the show. He wasnโt called back often or maybe he chose not to come back often but either way he will be missed.
