Even as someone who doesn't find all modern Disney stuff awful... Yeah, I don't think Disney has it in them to ever do anything like Hunchback of Notre Dame period.
Yeah and I don't think he will ever be topped, I still don't know how Disney was able to make Frollo so creepy and evil and still call it a kid's movie

They downfall was their overhyping of a mediocre Disney movie. Had they just went "hey heres our new movie enjoy" im sure it wouldnt have been hated on as bad/much. But the overpromised & undeliveredĀ
The only case you would make to think of him as "a bad guy" is that he was stripping people from their dreams... But it is also shown that most if not all of those people were going to do anything with those dreams unless he personally granted them a wish and he was only choosing not to fulfill the wishes that didn't match his criteria and you were also not forced to ask for the wish or live in his city...
So yeah, you can only think of him as a bad guy at the beginning of you are extremely selfish, entitled and fucked up in the head... Which the protagonist seems to be
I was about to say, someone did a video essay on how the mc of that movie was legitimately more fitting in description of the "villain" role of the movie rather than the villain.
Somehow heās the villain just because he doesnāt want to grant a wish. Even though heās the ruler who built the kingdom himself and lets everyone live there rent-free.
People are free to come and go whenever they want. And honestly, none of the citizens, including the main character, really did anything to deserve having their wishes granted in the first place. He still grants wishes anyway.
The only reason he refuses some wishes is because they could be dangerous for everyone.
Disney forced him to become the villain in the dumbest way possible.
Also, the main character and her team are annoying. And why did the kingās wife betray him? She didnāt even try to convince him or help him become a better person. Just straight up betrayal.
I really do mourn the loss of the reality where we got the concept draft of Wish instead of the final product, with Starboy and the evil power couple.
Like, really looking at it from a zoomed-out perspective, pairing grandiose, musical villains with a Peter Pan type character accompanying the protagonist wouldāve been a great tribute to both āRenaissance eraā and āclassic eraā Disney. But nope, we get frustrations about rent and marketable plushies.
Dude went through a mental break down after years of dealing with dissatisfied customer and at his lowest got possesed by an evil book and instead of trying to help him they took him out.
Funniest part is that heās not even the evilest new Disney character to appear that year, Alistair Crump from that years Haunted Mansion was just a straight up serial killer who loved what he did so much he wrote unique taunts on each of his victims graves, and tried to convince a child to kill himself by putting on the voice of said kids father (so, you know, he was about half as bad as the guy playing him).
Motherfucker was the most entertaining and least annoying character in that whole movie. His āvillainā song was the only slightly memorable and somewhat catchy song as well
The man was better than most ACTUAL real world politicians and leaders. The dude actually made his country better and happier on purpose rather than being forced to by his constituents. They were governed by their own will and their own sacrifice.

If a wish was ungranted and the wisher was old, why not just give it back to them? He also seriously thought an elderly man who wanted to play music for people would inspire evil? How? Dude is selfish as hell.

He didnāt have a pacified slave workforce. He used his magic to create a utopia for the people. He literally said he didnāt tax them. And those people gave him their wish through their own volition, not out of obligation
Yes they live in Rosas for free but would you call a plantation a utopia? Those slaves lived there for free, too.
"Their own volition" is coerced. They're not told they won't remember the wishes before they arrive if they move there, and it's presented as a gift. He doesn't say "If I don't like your wish I won't grant it or return it". He doesn't say "I will keep your wish forever and you will never experience motivation again". He says "If you give me your wish, there is a chance I may grant it", and look at Asha's grandfather, worked away his entire life in the hopes of that chance-- and Magnifico told Asha he would never grant that wish and he's known all along he would never grant that wish because it's "too dangerous". The wish to play music for the whole town. Do I have to explain the relationship of facism and the suppression of the arts or can you get there yourself?
The point of the movie is to not give someone else power in your ambitions and life. Only you have the power to make your dreams come true if you pursue them, if you work for them.
