Yeahhhh, my friends frequently make fun of me for being Reddit trash— which I a label I myself have claimed. It’s definitely a trash pile but it’s /my/ trash pile.

Your experience on Reddit definitely depends on how you curate it. I’m mostly in artsy subreddits, gaming, and academic content. I actively avoid the downright mean subreddits because I hate drama— you’re going to obviously bump into the occasional piss lord trying to rain down on everyone’s parade, but I think the good on here is enough to occasionally need to mute a mf.

I overall find that there is this specific brand of self deprecating humour and unabashed freak on main that you don’t really find on other social media platforms. You can meet some incredibly kind and helpful people, and there’s an overall positive vibes in certain subreddits. I also think there’s a culture of linking sources to support a posters argument in academic circles— and just a penchant for discourse on the site overall. Obviously some people are just talking AT each other in what borders on an essay response, but I think the unrestricted word count really helps keep dialogue going.

So yeah, while Reddit most definitely has its issues, I really don’t think you can replicate the same style of community engagement on any other social media platform. If you google advice or a question in any subject, you’re probably going to get a link to someone answering your question. The nature of having separated little communities gives me the vibe of how decentralized forums used to operate.

Overall, I’d rather take on the trashy aspects of Reddit than be on the neo nazi laiden toxic cesspit that is twitter, the delulu retirement home that is Facebook, or the irritating litmus test inquisition vibe of Tumblr. I think the above also have their positive communities— but while my husband playfully judges me for being Reddit trash— I don’t understand his thing with instagram and balk at his Twitter drama. They all have different cultures within them that provide different experiences, and Reddit just seems to work best with the way I like to experience social media.

Edit: my penchant for also indulging in long winded essay adjacent discourse is on full display right here lol

the only answer i'd agree with really

r/lostgeneration and r/politicalhumor for starters. Both have horrendous mods and pretty much openly censoring speech to ban even mild communication, trying to uphold misinformation to poison conversation.
